A much, much better and more fair documentary may be found at PBS Video, 'The War of 1812', but I have to admit this History Channel film has some great battle sequences if you're just into the flashing of the flintlocks.
And to the idiots out there: NEITHER SIDE WON THIS WAR. Yes, British burned Washington and they won all the early battles. But the Americans won all of the major battles at the end (and even after) the war officially ended. The war ended in a stalemate. Neither country won. Have you ever taken a history class? Learn it before you bash everyone. Seriously.
@Emeraldmist16 If you want to learn of a historical event such as the 100 years war do you only research one side of the conflict? The documentary is garbage. No mention of Tecumseh or Native perspective. The 1st 2 years of the war which saw huge US humiliations & outrages committed left out. Focusing only on British retaliation while ignoring US crimes that inspired it. The show creates an illusion of British aggression & US as defenders.
actually, out of kindness, USA Won. ONLY Because our incompetant commanders did not order Defense scheme no.1 (a win-win situation with even Napoleon losing.)
your all british,we gave you your culture,we know you admire us brits, without us there would be no usa ,and a lot of other countries,so please respect your motherland:O)
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month the guns fell silent. Today we remember. Solemn Greetings on this Remembrance Veterans Poppy Armistice Day to all nations.
And for the for Americans/Canadians Please accept my salute on the anniversary of the Battle of Crysler's Farm Nov 11 1813.
Ridiculously biased, as most Amercian produced history documentaries. It is designed to feed the myth of American invincibility. When this is pointed out Americans generally decree the nobility of their fight (unlike the dastardly European Imperialists) and how they've saved the world...more Myth making for the consumption of the ignorant masses. This serves only to confuse Americans when others fly planes into their buildings..."Why do they hate us?" they cry.
If you actually watched this you would have known that this documentary described the war as in which the united states hung on to dear life by a thread.
@MOETA9 I watched & was unimpressed. Pure lies created by ignoring the larger conflict the Napolionic wars where Briton was fighting for its very existance. In 1804 the USA funded Napolion & freed Frances military to concentrate in Europe with the Loisiana Purchase. By 1812 Britons survival was in doubt. If the Russions hadn't burned their own cities staving the French army.
The USA started the war out of GREED & Manifest destany to say otherwise is idiocy.
The term manifest destiny was not even coined in american politcs until 1839. And if greed is desiring that our merchant ship travle internationally with out being boarded and pressganged into the British navy then i guess we are guilty. The british are just as responsible as the americans for starting the war
@MOETA9 The whole continent of North America appears to be destined by Divine Providence to be peopled by one nation, speaking one language, professing one general system of religious and political principles, and accustomed to one general tenor of social usages and customs. For the common happiness of them all, for their peace and prosperity, I believe it is indispensable that they should be associated in one federal Union.
@MOETA9 The USA can hardly complain about the injustice of British actions unless your nation held it self to a higher moral standard. As late as the Civil war the Northen Union Army kidnaped Canadians to serve in the ranks, a practice called "crimping". Briton was at war with France & the USA was an Ally of them. A nation of pure treachery since the revolutanary war. Also the claim that Briton was arming & encoraging natives to attack settlements is paraniod delusions. Lies to flatter your egos
@MOETA9 Would dispatches from British officers objecting to sharing arms with Tecumsah's warrors for fear that after the Americans were repeled they would turn on British settelments do the job? If they would rather fall to Americans then ally with natives what is the likely hood British were giving arms to them before the war?
@MOETA9 The belief that Briton was aiding Natives comes from several easy to discredit sorces. First is the peacemedal he wore. These trinkits were given out at every treaty signing & had no more meaning then non agression not nessacerily a military alliance. Plus some historical accounts discribe it as a George Washington Colonial peace medal so he may have switched it depending on who he was trying to impress.
@MOETA9 Tecumsahs claims of British backing were to ment to intimadate USA settlers & negotiators plus inhance his image to fellow natives that does not mean they were true. During the Pontiac uprising native leaders claimed to be working with French backing that was not true ether. They hoped to encourage hostilities between British & French in so doing streangthen their own position.
@MOETA9 Royal Proclamation of 1763 is where the idea came from that Briton was trying to create an Native independant nation. Please note it predates the existance of the USA & while it may have helped inspired the Revolution it wasn't a British plot to prevent the USA from expanding. It was an simple ackolagement the natives had a right to exist on their own lands. That might sound like the same thing but only if you are stupid enough to believe that the USA had a right to steal those lands.
@MOETA9 Finally I don't have to prove any of this. Madison was as big a lier in 1812 as Bush was about Iraq. Or most of your presadents were in starting wars. Before you can claim any of this as historical fact YOU have to prove it & your nation never has done any such thing.
You put your evidence at odds with your claim. "officers objecting to sharing arms" So they did recieve orders to arm natives? You still dont refute that the british impressed americans into the RN.You complain about the USA stealing land, the same thing the british and every European power did in the New world, India, and the rest of the world. You complain about easyto discredit sources yet you dont hesitate to wildly spin the sources your using. Take a historiography course
@MOETA9 Yes Tecumsah & British allied together after the USA invaded Canada not Before as Madison lied before congress. I can't provide evedance of something that never existed prior to it happening. All I can find is an 1811 threat from Tecumsah that he would join the British. Nothing that we were using him from before or that we wanted him. Those referances I gave were all that US claimes were based on there was no proof. Your nation just wrote it in your history books as if it was fact. Lies.
@MOETA9 I'm not the idiot claiming the USA or Briton had a right to take Native lands. That is the damn history channel at fault. I'm part Mik'maq we don't put BS like this out in public & call it history in Canada. We don't make cowboy & Indian or any war movies painting our selves as heros & everybody else as villans. That is American brainwashing stupidity right there. First thing you have to do is unlearn all the propaganda down there before you can even learn history.
I have a feeling that you have never picked up or even looked at a US history text book. If you ever take the time to look up a random US states high school curriculum you will probably find out that a majority of schools dont have time to fit in the war of 1812 the US history course. most of us who do learn about it do it in selfstudy. Your also making an awful lot of assumumtions of US stupidity and propaganda when federal and state govts do not write the text books their using in classrooms
@MOETA9 By God! At least if your goverment was producing this garbage it would be held to some standard. Instead you select your education matteral by what ever is popular belief. It's not history at all it's mythology. Might as well be writing about Paul Bunion Johnny Appleseed or John Steel for all the accuracy you have. Listen you had some fine people on your side but if they are potrayed as bronzed demi-gods & our side as beast headed monsters then don't call it history.
It just happens the same people making our so called garbage also happens to print the garbage in your text books.McGrawHill Ryerson,Pretince Hall both publish widley used textbook in USA/CAN respective classrooms(same koolaid, different flavors ehh.) What exactly makes you the judge of whats accurate and whats false? Whats the line between history and popular belief? Are you not guilty of the charges you accuse Americans of?
@MOETA9 Are you not guilty of the charges you accuse Americans of?
Okay yes. I've seen my share of Canadian myth presented as fact. The French have one spin, Natives another, & English don't get me started it changes depending on Prodestant, Catholic or even who holds a majority in Parlament. If you want we can go to one of Many Canadian youtube BS historical vids & pick them apart? They are pretty boring compared to US outragous stuff but I spend more time with them then here.
@MOETA9 Considering your national anthem comemorates one of the battles of the war maybe you guys should try learning a bit about it. Tecumsah is taught up here especally to natives because as a British ally he does not make the British seem to be as big a bunch of dickheads as most colonal history does even so what happened certainly does not potray them as saviors ether. After Newark the war got ugly things were done that can't exactly be boasted about.
@MOETA9 The vast majority of those taken were in fact British deserters. Considering the aid the USA was giving Napolion we were with in our rights to declare war upon the USA that does not translate in to the USA having the same right. Since the USA did not hold it self to a higher standard any moral outrage is rather pathetic. Your side drafted people in to military as well. Not everyone who defended New Orleans was there by choise nor were they Americans.
@Eddythebeast666 You may also want to brush up on your knowledge of US-Franch relations prior to 1812. Why dont you go and research the Quasi war and the XYZ affair, and the treaty of Morfontain. France and the US were "neutral" at best towards eachother during the war
@MOETA9 1804 Loiusiana Purchase. Any claim of American neutrality leading up to 1812 trips over that. The Quasi war was your own fault for not repaying your war debt to France. That was taken care of by 1800. Hell if you hadn't rebeled you would have had protection from that crap as British citazens in the first place for damn fewer tax dollars then what you turn out to have to pay.
Napolean American strategy was failing, he just lost frances most important colony(hati) to rebellion he had no way to protect frances north american territories. The cheap sale of Upper and Lower Louisianna as easy way to keep it from falling into british hands while quickly raising funds to wage his wars
You got that right. Which means you didn't have to give anything to the scourge of Europe. It might have been a challenge but even as cheap as he let it go (that was a huge sum for the day) that same investment in your own military could have won you those lands from France. He didn't have the right to sell you native lands in the first place you had to fight for it in spite or what you paid. As it happened you would have been better off.
As it happened US help almost gave Napolion all of Europe. If Briton fell I assure you He would not have stopped. France had a heavy investment in the New world and a better relationship with Native tribes. I believe you would have found he would have been unlikely to have honored the deal.
one of the most neglected wars of american history lol!!! most americans prob aint even heard of it as they are force fed info about how righteous and godfareing they are in everything they do,the american leaders of that time are jus the same as they are now,Greedy, war mongering zealots who put there own wealth and interests first
@MrJJackYT this got nothing to do with canada. is a war between america & great britian. canada wasnt a nation yet. canada wasnt a nation then. it a british colonies.
I personally grow tired of those who constantly want the use the United States as the whipping boy for the world. We give more to help around the world than any other nation and all we get for our generosity is slapped around and stepped on by those who refuse to learn all of history instead of the parts that fit their narrow world view. We may not always be right and we may have gone down a crooked path at times but we are by far not the worst nation on this globe of ours either.
Ask any European alive today who felt the oppressive boot of the Nazi's if they think Americans are imperialists. If we truly were the boogeymen you seem to think we are, we would own over half of Europe and the world. Instead of imperialism, we buried our dead, packed up and headed back home.
I am european, and I think now we have problem cause the american intervention against nazis.
Why?
Cause Europe has his rules, and the american system of integration and capitalism is a failure, if Europe falls into a war there's no problem, is just as the last 5000years, so Americans, take off your hands from Europe and stay in your country who have more problems and enemy inside than abroad!
You're right, we should have just stayed over here and let Europe slug it out and just traded with whoever won. If it came to our shores, we should have kicked em back across the ocean to Europe and let them have their way. You seem to believe that the United States somehow wants or needs Europe. Hey, go your own way, I could really care less. Do your own thing but don't come bitching and complaining to us when it all falls apart. You can do better? Do it and stop blabbering about it!
@einherjarl srry man but it sounds like you would have liked to have been "SEIG HAIL"ing to hitler or whoever would be the leader now. oh wait you probably wouldent have been born because the nazis planned on killing almost every single person in the world who wasn't a perfect "Aryan" or pure german. so sorry for saving millions of lives and protecting ur... oh i dont know... FREEDOM. (ps god bless the poor 6 million plus people who died in the holocaust... or did that NOT happen MR. EINHERJARL?
@ApplesauseEmpire mh..sure, and what about YOUR INDIAN'S HOLOCAUST? it is not a question of nazi or not nazi. It is a question of people, slaughters have ever been in europe as said bby einherjarl, like in any other land, so the problem is your not our! also this is a freedom of choice.
@Canide85 i respect the dead during those dark times in my nations history but my point was that the united states protected the freedom of choice of all euopeans by defeating the oppressive nazi regime. also it is a fact that on dec. 7 1941 japan declared war on america. we responded by declareing war on japan. HITLER declared war on US on i belive 15 of dec 1941. before then England and the govt in exile of France had asked us to help but we had refused so they could deal with it themselves.
@ApplesauseEmpire you do not moved war to nazi's, but to the whole EUROPE, massive air raids citiyes crashed to the floor and then crushed by capitalism. USA attack have been in 1945! Remember: USA business is to break down a nation and then rebuilt it! nothing can save you from the inheritace of the escaped of Mayflower! Church and money! So when the Church is money ... all become clear.
maureen, would you ask anyone who has fought a war to apologize or do you just have a hate on for the United States? You have a problem with America trying early on in her life as a nation to expand her borders, something England, France, Holland and other nations throughout the world have done, but you have a problem with the U.S.? Kind of skewed isn't it?
You totally suck!!! Read your history dude! America declared war!! America invaded us!! Why? Manifest Destiny!!! And despite what you may think or read in your history books....you lost the war!!!!!! You were unable to achieve the war's goal of taking over Canada!! Therefore America failed!!! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!!!
absolutely agree, america failed in all of the goals it wanted to achieve, england suffered some defeats but overall I would rate England 4, USA 2...wasn't even close. This war was a total waste of American lives and dollars.
stupid canadian the war of 1812 is about america and british so canada shut the fuck up. canada was not a country in 1812 it a british provinces. canada became a country in 1867 not fuly independent 1982. america declare war on britain because Britain impede American trade with France and force recruitement of US citizen in british navy. there are british & american historian are interview in the documentary of first invasion 1812 so canada this war got nothing to do with u so fuck off.
Come on dude....watch the language....you are the one that looks like the fool....this was a terrible documentry...I is clear that america failed in it's desire to occupy the territory that would BECOME CANADA......you invaded us first, we were simply defending ourselves....in fact there is documented proof that the majority of the sailors the British took of the atlantic ships were infact deserters from the British Navy...so stick that up yer ass you wanker.....
america invaded the british provinces of canada and many of it had hope to be free from the british but some of it people fought back because they are loyal to the british. we dont want to occupy canada just invade to get back at the british. we manage to kill one of british general that responsible burning the white house. The Documentary of First Invasion War of 1812 was created by British & American Historian. canada a frozen land economically worthless dont want it.
don't want it? Economicallly Worthless? Good, then we will take back all the natural resources we send you americans. Our natural gas, lumber, water, electricity and most importantly...our oil!! We have the second largest oil reserves in the world, just behind Saudi Arabia...so you don't want any of that....we will see how well broke america gets along without those things...and by the way, in 1812, manifest destiny REQUIRED America to take over the British territory...not just invade it...
we could still survive without canada. it is u canadian that need us so badly . for example there are a lot of canadian hop the border to the america to get health care one them Shona Holmes including Politician Danny Williams if they relied on canada any longer they be dead. go search for them on youtube.
You are just another ignorant american who knows nothing about any country outside of america....get your facts straight about the war of 1812..perhaps you should watch a youtube video called "talking to americans"....by rick mercer...it pretty much sums up the intellectual level of a significant portion of the american population....
dude the documentary first invasion war of 1812 is are base on facts been confirmed by british & american historian u see them in the documentary interview. go search fo thier name. remember war of 1812 is about the Brit & USA.
There are just as many historians that would rebuke that viewpoint. America's political view at the time was Manifest Destiny - they had the God given right to rule over all north america. this is fact!! therefore their invasion of british territory was to rule over it, not just occupy for a time. Secondly, most of the troops that turned back the americans were indeed "Canadiens" - homesteaders...not trained british troops...
we invade the british provinces of canada and many of it people had hope to be free from british rule but people of provinces of canada fought back because they are loyal to the british. we started out poorly but end of winning in the end. Canada is a british provinces that it people are loyal to the british.Canada became a country in 1867 not fuly independent 1982. our goal in the war were to stop the british
The war of 1812 showed us all one important thing. Canada, USA, and UK together can defeat anyone. Also I dont get why us Canadians or the Americans always say well now adays we can beat you etc.. Seriously theres 100 other countries who are much more of a threat to us than eachother, so we should be coming together to kick their asses not fighting amongst ourselves.
@conda420 Americans, conda, don't think we have never lost a war, we accept that we have, the difference is that while other nations have conducted far worse wars and attrocities in the name of imperialism, wealth and power, Americans have had wars to promote, foster and give freedom to the world. I will admit in recent times, those aims have been clouded at times but the impetus is still there.
if Canada and the states fought now man to man Canada would still kick your asses because the states is all money and numbers that's it but man to man your not very good you just out number us 10 fat asses to one
you come through Mexico....to fight the Republic of Texas? man you are crazier than I thought....Texas would annihilate Australia. Remember the alamo!!!
The big invasion was the US invasion and attempted annexation of Canada. This was really what the war was about. Once the Canadians had beaten off the US army, there was nothing left to fight about.
The president's oak desk in the oval office was a present from the Royal Navy after the war as a "no hard feelings" gift for having burnt all the public building in Washington during the conflict.
You're just repeating American propaganda which i've already told you is rubbish. 'Restricting trade to Europe' is also a bogus reason for war considering you were deciding whether to declare war against the French as well. You need to read the young US's statement of manifest destiny and i've already told you your own militarys website says Canada was a war aim.
US delcares war, invades, is kicked out and is chased into its own country having its capitol burned and at the signing of the treaty of Ghent British soldiers are in possession of various US cities. Not only that but thousands of troops & ships are potentially able to be delivered to the US arena following the defeat of Napolean.
Bottom Line: The Treaty of Ghent did not give the USA one single objective of their war aims.
I know the Battle Of New Orleans was after the war officaly ended. However if the war continued this was a heavy blow to the British troops this lose would have crippled if not destroyed the front in the south. We outnumbered only because of Militia which is hardly anything. Militia broke and ran quickly and hardly fought. We didnt accomplish our war time objectives yes. However we did accomplish our goal of the war to get free trade.
Your war aim was Canada & the bogus claim of stopping impressment. If you don't believe me look on your armys own history pages.
most of the British army was fighting Napolean, so how they would have been 'crippled'? The US navy although it fought well had lost control of the open seas. There was nothing to stop the bigger ships of the line of the RN from going to the US
No not really we didnt want Canada that bad we were to poor to run that much land efficently any ways. Impressment was a issue yes but we declared war becuase the british were restricing our trade to Europe. The British army was crippled because the new front in the south of the US had just been decimated at New Orleans. Gathering money and supplies to start another would be to heavy.
When I read the title 'First Invasion' I thought they were talking about the american invasion of Canada, which is what started the war. This sickening and tragic act of US imperialism resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands, and was a pattern followed by the US in the americas for the next century. And did they even apologise? Naaaaah....
Well said Maureen. Think one or two of our US chums should take a long hard look at what Manifest Destiny was.
The war of 1812 in Britain was seen at the time as nothing other than a British/Canadian victory after the US had sued for peace.
Of course, 'but you were impressing our men' is the cry for those who try to justify invading canada. The truth is that both France & the UK had been doing it and the US was just spoiling for a fight with anyone. They chose the UK because of Canada.
Added to the fact that impressment had stopped 4 days before the war began. Just an excuse.
I always snigger when they bring up 'New Orleans' - guys this isolated battle happen after the peace treaty had been signed but no one could reach them in time to tell them. It wasn't even the last of several isolated battles - the last of which the British won.
It's amazing that you get crap propaganda like this when the US declared war, invaded Canada & got kicked out. Not only that got chased into their own country and had its own cities occupied & its capital burned.
The US were the ones suing for peace at the thought of more arrivals from the UK having defeated Napolean now being freed up to go the N.America.
The US sacked Montreal and burned Parliment buildings. The war ended when both sides decided just to stop fighting and to put everyhting back to where it was. Also Britain did turn its might on America. Its second invasion in the south which turned into the Battle Of New Orleans which was a huge defeat to the British Army.
New Orleans was fought after the war ended and was an isolated battle and not even the last battle in that war, which was won by the British. Both sides won plenty of battles throughout the war, the bottom line is when the treaty of Ghent was signed the US had won none of its pre-war objectives.
Of course the US sacked Montreal, which is why the US were aggressors and were kicked out of Canada. You realise that US troops & Militia heavily outnumbered British & Canadian forces everywhere?
because of political interference. Had our military been allowed to do the job properly then Communism would not have gained it's foothold in that country. Fighting all day and week just to pull back to your firebase and have to fight for the same ground again was a political strategy, NOT military. 1812 saw a Canadian victory, British victories and losses, as well as American victories and losses. Leading to everyone just going home. So why fight over it now?
It is more than fair to say that the war of 1812 was no success for the US. However, you cannot say that we are not the equals of the UK or any others nor should it be said that we are better. Britain has been successful against outrageous odds on many occasions throughout their impressive history. So have the people of the US. I would venture that NO country should deny that without US intervention WWI & WWII would have been lost. Nam was a mess but not because of military weakness, rather
vietnam wasnt a world power either, is that why that war was such a roaring success for you? your not as big as you think you are. when you havnt been successfully invaded for a thousand years, then consider yourself our equals.
p.s. on a good note though i am impressed by your mastery of our language, for foreigners, you Americans speak our language quite well.
...but...but....your country was founded and built by british people....or did you not realise that? Everyone who signed the declaration in independence was british, right up until they signed (technically, right up until 1783 when britain recognised the US as a country).
what is wrong with you americans? you declared war on britain and attempted to annex canada. u were soundly beaten all the way back to washington (which we burned) and then u sued for peace. i dont believe what im hearing "americas second war for liberation?". U TRIED TO INVADE CANADA! this time u were the agressors attempting to capitalize on briatains conflict with napolean and u lost! stop trying to make out it was a draw. u failed in your objective of trying to take canada:
and the british-canadian force achieved there goal by repelling this aggressive american imperialism. just because we didnt take american land either does not mean it was inconclusive. that wasnt our goal, just to protect canada from would be american imperialism. how ridiculous would it sound if britain tried to make out the 1776 war was a draw bcause although we didnt conquer america like wise the americans didnt conquer britain? it would be ridiculous as that wasnt your goal:
dont get me wrong im not hating on americans, i like u mostly, but what im hearing i just cant believe. all great nations lose wars every now and then in their history, its ok. your not doing too bad apart form 1812, the bay of pigs in cuba, and vietnam. but if u try to lie about history it can have dire results. p.s. im being serious i do like a great deal about america and its people. peace.
what sorry are you a retard? Destoryed are navy lol far from it! we blockaded you from start to fininsh of the war! YOU tried to invade Canada and failed to gain an inch of land! WE raped you!
plus somthing this vid didn't menchen is that the states declared war on britian and invaded the canaidian colenies while britian was alredy fighting one of the biggest wars in europe agaist Napolian
the reson the war of 1812 is neglected in the states is becouse they didn't win, they are to arogent to admit they can lose, and that we canadian colenist and britians burned there beloved capital
Has anyone mentioned the fact that , far from saving the U.S from annhilation, the Battle of New Orleans was fought AFTER the peace was signed(bad communications)and was militarily interesting , but strategically irrelevant.IF the British had won, they would have had to give any land back almost immediately-pointless.Still it is convenient as a distraction from the failed aggressive U.S actions "up North"
"Yes, the Brits had a big emipire and a brutal one at that. Raping. Pillaging. Murdering. Enslaving. Stealing. etc. etc. all in the name of the crown.
Yes. The British were VERY successful."
show the kind of brainwashing in america, they failed however to teach you that with out the British empire there would be no America, just New France...
I am from Canada and I feel no special connectoin between our countries and it is hilarious that you talk about brainwashing. It appears as much that they don't teach the British Empire's transgressions on the rest of the globe.
alass i feel no great link between myself and canadain people, however the countries do have massive historical tyies. Ive only been to Canada once and it is much more like americans little brother now. I do feel a great link with australlians as they are much on the same level us Britons.
could you please say why are behaviour was/is appalling. The British Empire compared to other Empire through out time has been much more peacefull and has preety much spread British westan ideals around the world eg globalisation, democracy and of course a universal language.
You Brits are very brainwashed. After you killed off the remaining Arawak indians(genocide) on Jamaica you brought slaves from Aftrica to work your sugar crops. This is not what a peaceful country does.
what? Like the americans did any better? We didnt wipeout the natives in Canada did we? infact we alone with canadain traders gave them weaopns to defend their lands against the americans. Iam not brainwashed we dont even get taught anything about the British empire in schools its seen as to imperlistic.
Pfft, I cannot believe the shite they teach you in schools in the UK. Yes, you gave weapons to the indians to help you keep the US from expanding, NOT to help them defend their lands. Nice propaganda they teach you I see. You Brits could give a damn about those people you just used them as an extention of your army. And yes, the brutality against the indians by Canadians is unacceptable but it would be pleasurable to see the British admit their abuses towards the indians too.
Ontario-if you believe that they teach ANYTHING about this war in schools in the U.K you've been sadly misinformed.Kids in Britain won't even learn about the Peninsular War,which was FAR more important at the time.
dude we dont get taught any of this shit in school, history we learn is all anti British it make me sick, we did nothing aganist the indians we where allied with from the day wr landed in the americas, thats one of the reasons we beat the french.
all white counties had black slaves, Britian and the Empire stoped having slaves in 1804 when it was banned. americans, however still had black slaves in the 1960s.
@v4@ that is a lie and you know it. america did not have slaves in the 1960's. and if england banned slavery in 1804 does that make england a better country than america when american outlawed slavery in the 1860's? A difference of a mere 56 years? it goes without saying you have no moral high ground to stand on.
yes the slave trade in america was abolished in 1808 but people still owned and treated black people like slaves also black people couldnt sit down on busses or vote! remember M.L.K!
what world do you live in m8? Have you ever heard of martin luther king? Does "i have a dream" mean anything to you. The importing of salves to make money was banned but black people where treated like shit in america up to the 1960s. And yes black people couldnt vote in the 1960s in america!
you dont have to tell me about American Histroy dude, if you seroulsly think African-Americans got the right to vote in 1960 i can't help you, only a teacher can
the day all blacks became free they were able to vote
every country has had something wrong in it's past that we would not agree on today. But don't start saying shit about other countries past when the U.K. treated everybody like SHIT! Don't get me wrong, england was so corrupted and Socialist that many people had to leave on a dangerous gerney just to live in a hut or what ever the pilgrims lived in. that's prety sad
I hate to break it to you but 'the pilgrims' were religious nutcases along the lines of Al-Queda, who murdered hundreds of native americans in their first few years on the continent. They wanted to overthrow the english government and establish a christian fundamentalist state and were considered enemies of the people (quite rightly) for doing so. They were anti-reason, anti-money (socialist, you could say), and corrupt from top to bottom, which is why they were forced to leave england. Ok dear?
I wasn't wasn't talking about the pilgrims, we left englan because you guys were total assholes lol but not anymore :) I'm not saying america back then wasn't the best either due to slavery and murdering indians but the same goes to england. Englan was the biggest war machine during that time!! and well, the king/queen were asholes back then and controlled everything. but now thing are better, well used to be better thanx to george bush >=(
As in the Vietnam War, the U.S. considered its position at the end of the War of 1812 a draw. In retrospect, both wars could reasonably be considered a loss to this country, having failed in our expansionist goals, having lost ground to the "enemy," and having expended human lives and extraordinary resources for naught.
And most of those "Canadians" that you inaccurately refer to. Most of them were Americans from the colonies. They were known as United Empire Loyalists who moved northwards after the American War of Independence, some totaling 70,000.
Canada had no government, no unity, nor a country to speak of.
government and ID doesn't happen with a stroke of a pen: American would disagree with you, Kruds,Tamils,Turks (formally Ottomans would completely disagree with you as there country was tech'ly formed in 1922. Your idea of immature nation is weak. In fact, in most of the world Asia,Europe- the USA is an infant nation. Our history dates back to John Cabot
Dude...I'm not arguing when a nation is written in paper- yes the US Constitution is older then the BNA Act.I am saying that a people can be understood as a nation of people and long preceeds a formal document. The eg.s given shows that many nations of people are valid but have no document. Even many US'ers understood themselves different from the UK long before 1776-as did Canadians, who also had many non-UK ethnics : German,Swedish,French ect. The people make a country not a silly document.
What other nation's COnstitution has been modelled on in over 130 countries world wide?
The United States set the course for representative democracy in the form of a Federal Constitutional Republic.
And FYI, the Jamestown Colony is the oldest English/British settlement in North America. But even so before that, Ponce de Leon, a Spanish Conquistador was the first documented European settler to reach North America in what is now known as Florida.
congrats! want a belly-rub? Nothing to do with a US 1812 loss. Well they found remains of Viking settlements in New Foundland that predates any European.....so what? nothing to do with 1812?
Not to mention in the years following the war, British North America was threatened with the possibility of American invasion in the coming years. Living their lives in constant fear. So what type of victory is that when people have to remain vigilant?
buddy...leave the dramma "living in fear" for the entertaining History Channel. My relatives happily popped Irish-American Fennians when the decided to flex US muscles by comming up...(true story). Your history involved much more settler fear then did Canada. We didn't have Indian Wars where young boys and men were scalped and your women ravaged.
To woodss3: One way or another, either by force or peacefully, Canada will indeed go back into the fold with the United States and it will integrate into a North American Union, as part of it's obligation to NAFTA. And it will happen whether or not the Canadian people like it or not.
NAFTA has alot with a US loss in 1812 doesn't it? Well Canada...my friend, will do what is best for Canada- "like it or not". NAFTA is another peice of paper..nothing is forever..not even tade agreements...or superpowers ;)... BTW force has not worked for the USA in a long time- including with Canada.
As your largest trading partner as well as your largest foreign investor, we could make Canada come crawling to its knees as well as its economy go to a screeching halt.
The NAU is already been decided, and by the next 20 to 40 years, our countries will be borderless into something reminiscent of the European Union.
great...nothing to do with an 1812 US loss. BTW 1/5 products that you munch on, drive, or wear comes from Canada in some way.So don't think economic pissing-wars would not damage the US beyond repair. Re NAU, I'm sure I will be able to put my vote against their resolution if I feel to do so.
US pissing wars. It worked quite effectively when Nixon dissolved the Auto Pact with Canada. As I recall, Lester Pearson came crawling to Washington begging for a reversal of the decision.
"Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt." -- Pierre Trudeau
True...but you folks look like the world bad-guy to many and we can enjoy one of if not the highest standard of living in the world laughing while trillions of tax US dollars get waisted on wars that the US has created.
Ya and softwood lumber where the US tried to muscle Canasa and ended up paying billions in penalties. On and on...back and forth...nothing to do with an 1812 US War loss ...but oh well. All in all the US could make life terribly difficult, but obviously when puch comes to shove (as seen in 1812) we can hold our own get new friends and turn the tap off: oil, water ect.
True Nucs did work vs. Japan...well like I said has not worked against Canada. As threats of Nucs or immanent danger to our existance would result in probably alliances with Russia/China/France who would sell us what we needed to terrify enough Americans to have "UNCLE SAM" back down as they have against little old NK.
To woodss3: Canada would not have time to retaliate with a nuclear war with America because of the fact that you'd be dead and would no longer exist.
Secondly, China has less than 200 nukes in their stockpile. France, the same. American has 5000+ nuclear warheads.
Russia, most of their stockpile of warheads are severely outdated and gathering dust on shelves. American nuclear weapons have a much longer range than what Russia has, a mere relic of the USSR.
all you need is 10 apparently (or the threat of having 10)..The US would not instantaneously attack (see NK), there would be time we have lots of money.
If Canadians do not like the political or economic situation found in North America, then perhaps they should leave and move abroad. There are many more Americans on these lands than Canadians. Love it or leave it.
leave(lol!)..dude this is my country...why would I go anywhere? Canada will do what is best for Canada and protect its interests. If NAFTA is unbearable we'll rip it up. The US is a declining power, and there are many countries to trade with including the USA. "There are many more Americans on these lands than Canadians"....so what? Perhaps global warming will change that?(lol) California is looking like a dust bowl lately .
A much, much better and more fair documentary may be found at PBS Video, 'The War of 1812', but I have to admit this History Channel film has some great battle sequences if you're just into the flashing of the flintlocks.

This was a great documentary (:
And to the idiots out there: NEITHER SIDE WON THIS WAR. Yes, British burned Washington and they won all the early battles. But the Americans won all of the major battles at the end (and even after) the war officially ended. The war ended in a stalemate. Neither country won. Have you ever taken a history class? Learn it before you bash everyone. Seriously.
Emeraldmist16 10 months ago
@Emeraldmist16 If you want to learn of a historical event such as the 100 years war do you only research one side of the conflict? The documentary is garbage. No mention of Tecumseh or Native perspective. The 1st 2 years of the war which saw huge US humiliations & outrages committed left out. Focusing only on British retaliation while ignoring US crimes that inspired it. The show creates an illusion of British aggression & US as defenders.
Jingoistic & Insulting to the intelligence.

MOETA9 1 year ago
@MOETA9 I watched & was unimpressed. Pure lies created by ignoring the larger conflict the Napolionic wars where Briton was fighting for its very existance. In 1804 the USA funded Napolion & freed Frances military to concentrate in Europe with the Loisiana Purchase. By 1812 Britons survival was in doubt. If the Russions hadn't burned their own cities staving the French army.
The USA started the war out of GREED & Manifest destany to say otherwise is idiocy.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@Eddythebeast666
The term manifest destiny was not even coined in american politcs until 1839. And if greed is desiring that our merchant ship travle internationally with out being boarded and pressganged into the British navy then i guess we are guilty. The british are just as responsible as the americans for starting the war
MOETA9 1 year ago
@MOETA9 The whole continent of North America appears to be destined by Divine Providence to be peopled by one nation, speaking one language, professing one general system of religious and political principles, and accustomed to one general tenor of social usages and customs. For the common happiness of them all, for their peace and prosperity, I believe it is indispensable that they should be associated in one federal Union.
John Quincy Adams Louisiana Purchase in 1803
Continentalism then
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@MOETA9 The USA can hardly complain about the injustice of British actions unless your nation held it self to a higher moral standard. As late as the Civil war the Northen Union Army kidnaped Canadians to serve in the ranks, a practice called "crimping". Briton was at war with France & the USA was an Ally of them. A nation of pure treachery since the revolutanary war. Also the claim that Briton was arming & encoraging natives to attack settlements is paraniod delusions. Lies to flatter your egos
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@Eddythebeast666
Care to prove that these claims were lies
MOETA9 1 year ago
@MOETA9 Would dispatches from British officers objecting to sharing arms with Tecumsah's warrors for fear that after the Americans were repeled they would turn on British settelments do the job? If they would rather fall to Americans then ally with natives what is the likely hood British were giving arms to them before the war?
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@MOETA9 The belief that Briton was aiding Natives comes from several easy to discredit sorces. First is the peacemedal he wore. These trinkits were given out at every treaty signing & had no more meaning then non agression not nessacerily a military alliance. Plus some historical accounts discribe it as a George Washington Colonial peace medal so he may have switched it depending on who he was trying to impress.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@MOETA9 Tecumsahs claims of British backing were to ment to intimadate USA settlers & negotiators plus inhance his image to fellow natives that does not mean they were true. During the Pontiac uprising native leaders claimed to be working with French backing that was not true ether. They hoped to encourage hostilities between British & French in so doing streangthen their own position.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@MOETA9 Royal Proclamation of 1763 is where the idea came from that Briton was trying to create an Native independant nation. Please note it predates the existance of the USA & while it may have helped inspired the Revolution it wasn't a British plot to prevent the USA from expanding. It was an simple ackolagement the natives had a right to exist on their own lands. That might sound like the same thing but only if you are stupid enough to believe that the USA had a right to steal those lands.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@MOETA9 Finally I don't have to prove any of this. Madison was as big a lier in 1812 as Bush was about Iraq. Or most of your presadents were in starting wars. Before you can claim any of this as historical fact YOU have to prove it & your nation never has done any such thing.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@Eddythebeast666
MOETA9 1 year ago
@MOETA9 Yes Tecumsah & British allied together after the USA invaded Canada not Before as Madison lied before congress. I can't provide evedance of something that never existed prior to it happening. All I can find is an 1811 threat from Tecumsah that he would join the British. Nothing that we were using him from before or that we wanted him. Those referances I gave were all that US claimes were based on there was no proof. Your nation just wrote it in your history books as if it was fact. Lies.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@MOETA9 I'm not the idiot claiming the USA or Briton had a right to take Native lands. That is the damn history channel at fault. I'm part Mik'maq we don't put BS like this out in public & call it history in Canada. We don't make cowboy & Indian or any war movies painting our selves as heros & everybody else as villans. That is American brainwashing stupidity right there. First thing you have to do is unlearn all the propaganda down there before you can even learn history.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
I have a feeling that you have never picked up or even looked at a US history text book. If you ever take the time to look up a random US states high school curriculum you will probably find out that a majority of schools dont have time to fit in the war of 1812 the US history course. most of us who do learn about it do it in selfstudy. Your also making an awful lot of assumumtions of US stupidity and propaganda when federal and state govts do not write the text books their using in classrooms
MOETA9 1 year ago
@MOETA9 By God! At least if your goverment was producing this garbage it would be held to some standard. Instead you select your education matteral by what ever is popular belief. It's not history at all it's mythology. Might as well be writing about Paul Bunion Johnny Appleseed or John Steel for all the accuracy you have. Listen you had some fine people on your side but if they are potrayed as bronzed demi-gods & our side as beast headed monsters then don't call it history.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@Eddythebeast666
MOETA9 1 year ago
@MOETA9 Are you not guilty of the charges you accuse Americans of?
Okay yes. I've seen my share of Canadian myth presented as fact. The French have one spin, Natives another, & English don't get me started it changes depending on Prodestant, Catholic or even who holds a majority in Parlament. If you want we can go to one of Many Canadian youtube BS historical vids & pick them apart? They are pretty boring compared to US outragous stuff but I spend more time with them then here.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@MOETA9 Considering your national anthem comemorates one of the battles of the war maybe you guys should try learning a bit about it. Tecumsah is taught up here especally to natives because as a British ally he does not make the British seem to be as big a bunch of dickheads as most colonal history does even so what happened certainly does not potray them as saviors ether. After Newark the war got ugly things were done that can't exactly be boasted about.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@MOETA9 The vast majority of those taken were in fact British deserters. Considering the aid the USA was giving Napolion we were with in our rights to declare war upon the USA that does not translate in to the USA having the same right. Since the USA did not hold it self to a higher standard any moral outrage is rather pathetic. Your side drafted people in to military as well. Not everyone who defended New Orleans was there by choise nor were they Americans.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@Eddythebeast666 You may also want to brush up on your knowledge of US-Franch relations prior to 1812. Why dont you go and research the Quasi war and the XYZ affair, and the treaty of Morfontain. France and the US were "neutral" at best towards eachother during the war
MOETA9 1 year ago
@MOETA9 1804 Loiusiana Purchase. Any claim of American neutrality leading up to 1812 trips over that. The Quasi war was your own fault for not repaying your war debt to France. That was taken care of by 1800. Hell if you hadn't rebeled you would have had protection from that crap as British citazens in the first place for damn fewer tax dollars then what you turn out to have to pay.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@Eddythebeast666
Napolean American strategy was failing, he just lost frances most important colony(hati) to rebellion he had no way to protect frances north american territories. The cheap sale of Upper and Lower Louisianna as easy way to keep it from falling into british hands while quickly raising funds to wage his wars
MOETA9 1 year ago
@MOETA9 "Napolean American strategy was failing"
You got that right. Which means you didn't have to give anything to the scourge of Europe. It might have been a challenge but even as cheap as he let it go (that was a huge sum for the day) that same investment in your own military could have won you those lands from France. He didn't have the right to sell you native lands in the first place you had to fight for it in spite or what you paid. As it happened you would have been better off.
Eddythebeast666 1 year ago
@MOETA9 Napolean American strategy was failing
As it happened US help almost gave Napolion all of Europe. If Briton fell I assure you He would not have stopped. France had a heavy investment in the New world and a better relationship with Native tribes. I believe you would have found he would have been unlikely to have honored the deal.

Why?
Cause Europe has his rules, and the american system of integration and capitalism is a failure, if Europe falls into a war there's no problem, is just as the last 5000years, so Americans, take off your hands from Europe and stay in your country who have more problems and enemy inside than abroad!

america invaded the british provinces of canada and many of it had hope to be free from the british but some of it people fought back because they are loyal to the british. we dont want to occupy canada just invade to get back at the british. we manage to kill one of british general that responsible burning the white house.

'Restricting trade to Europe' is also a bogus reason for war considering you were deciding whether to declare war against the French as well. You need to read the young US's statement of manifest destiny and i've already told you your own militarys website says Canada was a war aim.
madbob73 2 years ago
It gets better....
US delcares war, invades, is kicked out and is chased into its own country having its capitol burned and at the signing of the treaty of Ghent British soldiers are in possession of various US cities. Not only that but thousands of troops & ships are potentially able to be delivered to the US arena following the defeat of Napolean.
Bottom Line: The Treaty of Ghent did not give the USA one single objective of their war aims.
madbob73 3 years ago
I know the Battle Of New Orleans was after the war officaly ended. However if the war continued this was a heavy blow to the British troops this lose would have crippled if not destroyed the front in the south. We outnumbered only because of Militia which is hardly anything. Militia broke and ran quickly and hardly fought. We didnt accomplish our war time objectives yes. However we did accomplish our goal of the war to get free trade.
kewlboy567 3 years ago
Your war aim was Canada & the bogus claim of stopping impressment. If you don't believe me look on your armys own history pages.
most of the British army was fighting Napolean, so how they would have been 'crippled'? The US navy although it fought well had lost control of the open seas. There was nothing to stop the bigger ships of the line of the RN from going to the US
madbob73 3 years ago
No not really we didnt want Canada that bad we were to poor to run that much land efficently any ways. Impressment was a issue yes but we declared war becuase the british were restricing our trade to Europe. The British army was crippled because the new front in the south of the US had just been decimated at New Orleans. Gathering money and supplies to start another would be to heavy.
kewlboy567 2 years ago
A new front? The front was entirely on the US. Sure they lost a southern invading point, but they had coastal cities captured.
And trade to Europe was restricted because of the war with Napoleon. England didn't want the US giving him supplies.
Had the war continued the US could have been defeated, but instead peace was declared.

When I read the title 'First Invasion' I thought they were talking about the american invasion of Canada, which is what started the war. This sickening and tragic act of US imperialism resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands, and was a pattern followed by the US in the americas for the next century. And did they even apologise? Naaaaah....
maureenOWW 3 years ago 3
Well said Maureen. Think one or two of our US chums should take a long hard look at what Manifest Destiny was.
The war of 1812 in Britain was seen at the time as nothing other than a British/Canadian victory after the US had sued for peace.
Of course, 'but you were impressing our men' is the cry for those who try to justify invading canada. The truth is that both France & the UK had been doing it and the US was just spoiling for a fight with anyone. They chose the UK because of Canada.
madbob73 3 years ago
Added to the fact that impressment had stopped 4 days before the war began. Just an excuse.
I always snigger when they bring up 'New Orleans' - guys this isolated battle happen after the peace treaty had been signed but no one could reach them in time to tell them. It wasn't even the last of several isolated battles - the last of which the British won.
madbob73 3 years ago
It's amazing that you get crap propaganda like this when the US declared war, invaded Canada & got kicked out. Not only that got chased into their own country and had its own cities occupied & its capital burned.
The US were the ones suing for peace at the thought of more arrivals from the UK having defeated Napolean now being freed up to go the N.America.
madbob73 3 years ago
The US sacked Montreal and burned Parliment buildings. The war ended when both sides decided just to stop fighting and to put everyhting back to where it was. Also Britain did turn its might on America. Its second invasion in the south which turned into the Battle Of New Orleans which was a huge defeat to the British Army.
kewlboy567 3 years ago

So why fight over it now?
ebrithilWildman 3 years ago
It is more than fair to say that the war of 1812 was no success for the US. However, you cannot say that we are not the equals of the UK or any others nor should it be said that we are better. Britain has been successful against outrageous odds on many occasions throughout their impressive history. So have the people of the US. I would venture that NO country should deny that without US intervention WWI & WWII would have been lost. Nam was a mess but not because of military weakness, rather
ebrithilWildman 3 years ago
vietnam wasnt a world power either, is that why that war was such a roaring success for you? your not as big as you think you are. when you havnt been successfully invaded for a thousand years, then consider yourself our equals.
p.s. on a good note though i am impressed by your mastery of our language, for foreigners, you Americans speak our language quite well.

So stop being a silly billy.
maureenOWW 3 years ago
what is wrong with you americans? you declared war on britain and attempted to annex canada. u were soundly beaten all the way back to washington (which we burned) and then u sued for peace. i dont believe what im hearing "americas second war for liberation?". U TRIED TO INVADE CANADA! this time u were the agressors attempting to capitalize on briatains conflict with napolean and u lost! stop trying to make out it was a draw. u failed in your objective of trying to take canada:
adyingbreed82 3 years ago 3
and the british-canadian force achieved there goal by repelling this aggressive american imperialism. just because we didnt take american land either does not mean it was inconclusive. that wasnt our goal, just to protect canada from would be american imperialism. how ridiculous would it sound if britain tried to make out the 1776 war was a draw bcause although we didnt conquer america like wise the americans didnt conquer britain? it would be ridiculous as that wasnt your goal:
adyingbreed82 3 years ago
dont get me wrong im not hating on americans, i like u mostly, but what im hearing i just cant believe. all great nations lose wars every now and then in their history, its ok. your not doing too bad apart form 1812, the bay of pigs in cuba, and vietnam. but if u try to lie about history it can have dire results. p.s. im being serious i do like a great deal about america and its people. peace.

I am from Canada and I feel no special connectoin between our countries and it is hilarious that you talk about brainwashing. It appears as much that they don't teach the British Empire's transgressions on the rest of the globe.
Your behaviour was/is appalling.
OntarioJack 3 years ago
alass i feel no great link between myself and canadain people, however the countries do have massive historical tyies. Ive only been to Canada once and it is much more like americans little brother now. I do feel a great link with australlians as they are much on the same level us Britons.
1V4Victory1 3 years ago
could you please say why are behaviour was/is appalling. The British Empire compared to other Empire through out time has been much more peacefull and has preety much spread British westan ideals around the world eg globalisation, democracy and of course a universal language.
1V4Victory1 3 years ago
You Brits are very brainwashed. After you killed off the remaining Arawak indians(genocide) on Jamaica you brought slaves from Aftrica to work your sugar crops. This is not what a peaceful country does.
OntarioJack 3 years ago
what? Like the americans did any better? We didnt wipeout the natives in Canada did we? infact we alone with canadain traders gave them weaopns to defend their lands against the americans. Iam not brainwashed we dont even get taught anything about the British empire in schools its seen as to imperlistic.
1V4Victory1 3 years ago
Pfft, I cannot believe the shite they teach you in schools in the UK. Yes, you gave weapons to the indians to help you keep the US from expanding, NOT to help them defend their lands. Nice propaganda they teach you I see. You Brits could give a damn about those people you just used them as an extention of your army. And yes, the brutality against the indians by Canadians is unacceptable but it would be pleasurable to see the British admit their abuses towards the indians too.
OntarioJack 3 years ago
Ontario-if you believe that they teach ANYTHING about this war in schools in the U.K you've been sadly misinformed.Kids in Britain won't even learn about the Peninsular War,which was FAR more important at the time.
ektatherm 3 years ago
dude we dont get taught any of this shit in school, history we learn is all anti British it make me sick, we did nothing aganist the indians we where allied with from the day wr landed in the americas, thats one of the reasons we beat the french.
1V4Victory1 3 years ago
all white counties had black slaves, Britian and the Empire stoped having slaves in 1804 when it was banned. americans, however still had black slaves in the 1960s.
1V4Victory1 3 years ago
@v4@ that is a lie and you know it. america did not have slaves in the 1960's. and if england banned slavery in 1804 does that make england a better country than america when american outlawed slavery in the 1860's? A difference of a mere 56 years? it goes without saying you have no moral high ground to stand on.

well you dont know much do you if you thing black people where treated equal in the 60s and that slavery really stopped in the US in 1860.
1V4Victory1 3 years ago
every country has had something wrong in it's past that we would not agree on today. But don't start saying shit about other countries past when the U.K. treated everybody like SHIT! Don't get me wrong, england was so corrupted and Socialist that many people had to leave on a dangerous gerney just to live in a hut or what ever the pilgrims lived in. that's prety sad
britishareawesome69 3 years ago
I hate to break it to you but 'the pilgrims' were religious nutcases along the lines of Al-Queda, who murdered hundreds of native americans in their first few years on the continent. They wanted to overthrow the english government and establish a christian fundamentalist state and were considered enemies of the people (quite rightly) for doing so. They were anti-reason, anti-money (socialist, you could say), and corrupt from top to bottom, which is why they were forced to leave england. Ok dear?
maureenOWW 3 years ago

YogaNate79 3 years ago
government and ID doesn't happen with a stroke of a pen: American would disagree with you, Kruds,Tamils,Turks (formally Ottomans would completely disagree with you as there country was tech'ly formed in 1922. Your idea of immature nation is weak. In fact, in most of the world Asia,Europe- the USA is an infant nation. Our history dates back to John Cabot
woodss3 3 years ago
To woodss3: As a political entity, the United States is much older than any nation known as Canada.
Oldest written Constitution in the world with a Federal Republic still in existence.
1776 = Founding of the USA
1867 = Founding of Canada
YogaNate79 3 years ago
Dude...I'm not arguing when a nation is written in paper- yes the US Constitution is older then the BNA Act.I am saying that a people can be understood as a nation of people and long preceeds a formal document. The eg.s given shows that many nations of people are valid but have no document. Even many US'ers understood themselves different from the UK long before 1776-as did Canadians, who also had many non-UK ethnics : German,Swedish,French ect. The people make a country not a silly document.
woodss3 3 years ago
What other nation's COnstitution has been modelled on in over 130 countries world wide?
The United States set the course for representative democracy in the form of a Federal Constitutional Republic.
And FYI, the Jamestown Colony is the oldest English/British settlement in North America. But even so before that, Ponce de Leon, a Spanish Conquistador was the first documented European settler to reach North America in what is now known as Florida.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
congrats! want a belly-rub? Nothing to do with a US 1812 loss. Well they found remains of Viking settlements in New Foundland that predates any European.....so what? nothing to do with 1812?
woodss3 3 years ago
Not to mention in the years following the war, British North America was threatened with the possibility of American invasion in the coming years. Living their lives in constant fear. So what type of victory is that when people have to remain vigilant?
YogaNate79 3 years ago
buddy...leave the dramma "living in fear" for the entertaining History Channel. My relatives happily popped Irish-American Fennians when the decided to flex US muscles by comming up...(true story). Your history involved much more settler fear then did Canada. We didn't have Indian Wars where young boys and men were scalped and your women ravaged.
woodss3 3 years ago
To woodss3: One way or another, either by force or peacefully, Canada will indeed go back into the fold with the United States and it will integrate into a North American Union, as part of it's obligation to NAFTA. And it will happen whether or not the Canadian people like it or not.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
NAFTA has alot with a US loss in 1812 doesn't it? Well Canada...my friend, will do what is best for Canada- "like it or not". NAFTA is another peice of paper..nothing is forever..not even tade agreements...or superpowers ;)... BTW force has not worked for the USA in a long time- including with Canada.
woodss3 3 years ago
As your largest trading partner as well as your largest foreign investor, we could make Canada come crawling to its knees as well as its economy go to a screeching halt.
The NAU is already been decided, and by the next 20 to 40 years, our countries will be borderless into something reminiscent of the European Union.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
great...nothing to do with an 1812 US loss. BTW 1/5 products that you munch on, drive, or wear comes from Canada in some way.So don't think economic pissing-wars would not damage the US beyond repair. Re NAU, I'm sure I will be able to put my vote against their resolution if I feel to do so.
woodss3 3 years ago
US pissing wars. It worked quite effectively when Nixon dissolved the Auto Pact with Canada. As I recall, Lester Pearson came crawling to Washington begging for a reversal of the decision.
"Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt." -- Pierre Trudeau
In other words, do not mess with us.

"Foce has not worked for the USA in a long time"
Try telling that line to the Japanese. They got the atom bomb, courtesy of Uncle Sam. Case closed.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
True Nucs did work vs. Japan...well like I said has not worked against Canada. As threats of Nucs or immanent danger to our existance would result in probably alliances with Russia/China/France who would sell us what we needed to terrify enough Americans to have "UNCLE SAM" back down as they have against little old NK.
woodss3 3 years ago
To woodss3: Canada would not have time to retaliate with a nuclear war with America because of the fact that you'd be dead and would no longer exist.
Secondly, China has less than 200 nukes in their stockpile. France, the same. American has 5000+ nuclear warheads.
Russia, most of their stockpile of warheads are severely outdated and gathering dust on shelves. American nuclear weapons have a much longer range than what Russia has, a mere relic of the USSR.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
all you need is 10 apparently (or the threat of having 10)..The US would not instantaneously attack (see NK), there would be time we have lots of money.
woodss3 3 years ago
If Canadians do not like the political or economic situation found in North America, then perhaps they should leave and move abroad. There are many more Americans on these lands than Canadians. Love it or leave it.

Perhaps global warming will change that?(lol) California is looking like a dust bowl lately .
