Is the reason why you think the Game Gear version of Sonic is atrocious because you don't like the Master System? I ask this because the Game Gear and Master System versions of Sonic are virtually the same game. This is a very pretty game, very colourful, it looks awesome on that screen.
@Lachlant1984 I don't remember if it was Sonic or Sonic 2 I referred to in this video (it was ages ago), but Sonic 2 on Game Gear is just plain awful. It's full of leaps of faith, where you have to jump without seeing what you're jumping to, and deadly drops that appear leaving no chance to save yourself unless you have memorised the level. Not good game design at all.
yeah i hate playing on emulators too. its not a genuine gaming experience. its always best to play games on the original consoles they were meant to be played on. the only game ive played on an emulator because, its way too expensive to buy on the console, is earthbound.
@spear401 I mean it would be easier to capture video from an emulator, but I'm a collector of hardware even more than of software, so to me at least, putting in a little extra effort to get video footage from the actual screen feels more valid.
If I were just a gamer, it really wouldn't matter, the only thing I'd be interested in would be the game. But as I said... I'm a collector too.
The distinction is subtle, but I feel quite valid.
Nice Neo Geo Pocket uploads, I wanted to know what the games looked like on the system itself, and so it's great to see someone keeping the retro interest going. Thanks!
It was released in Japan in '98, and the USA in '99... not sure when it was released in Europe. It was withdrawn a couple of years later, and then re-released around '03 by another company as a budget system, to clear old stock.
Plenty of them turn up on ebay at reasonable prices.
It's a good game, and way better than Sonic on the Game Gear, as it can handle the speed, and given decent lighting, you can actually see what's happening on the screen.
because at the time neogeo didn't have a lot of money because the arcades were pretty much dead at the time and released the pocet color to get that money back, however they had no money for advertising which killed it which made neogeo go bankrupt and get bought out by SNK
just by lookin at that game you can tell that the neo geo pocket was a hot system, and probably the best portable system compared to gameboy, advance, game com and gamegear.
Sonic looks good. The Neo Geo was very hard to find in the UK, a friend of mine had to import one from Japan this was back in 1999. For the time it was a super system
I always wanted one of these, but never found one. Of course, it didn't help that you basically couldn't find it in any stores outside of speciality shops.
Its true, they were virtually impossible to find when SNK were still in business.
However, after they'd closed down, another company bought up their stocks of these handhelds, repackaged them, and shipped into such stores as Gamestation, at a budget price of £39.99 or so.
Even better, they came bundled with 6 games... which is how I came to have this example.
The first level is nearly an exact copy of emerald hill for sonic 2 on the megadrive!

@RUSS16V2 Yes, I think much of the game was heavily influenced by (copied from) Sonic 2.

conarunleashed 6 months ago
@conarunleashed Yes, though actually finding any games for it was fairly hit and miss before ebay.

@SteveBenway: yeah, it should've said that it was in europe on wikipedia

@SteveBenway: what was the date of this game's release in europe, do you know?

I loved Sonic on Neo Geo pocket.
You might be able to mod your Neo Geo pocket and put aback light in. My friend put a back light in his GBA.
I never did I'm not good at modding.

@mp4podcastDOTcom It'd probably improve it's functionality some, but I've never been into modding.
Fortunately, even unlit, the screen on the Neo Geo Pocket Color is much easier to see stuff on than the original GBA :)

@SkankinDevil89 There are definitely times when an Emulator is the only option. Mame is pretty much an essential unless you're insanely rich.

I need to get one of these just for Cotton , the 2 Metal Slug Games, and the excellent Sonic game shown here.
I do love that little control nub.

in my eyes i think this would have beaten the gameboy color but why wasn't it poplular in the usa?
Haseorunemanga 2 years ago
I think it came down to being a bit expensive, poor distribution and poor marketing.
Back then, who'd even heard of them, much less seen them in the shops?
