The Reds are good for high end cinematic production and 200 million dollar movies. The Canon DSLRS are good for students films, short films, local and national commercials, network television production, broadcast production, independent films, and selective shots in Hollywood films.
What a pompous fuck. DSLRS are only good to shoot web videos? If that is the case, then why did Anthony Dod Mantle (DP, Slumdog Millionaire) shoot part of "127 Hours" on the 5D and 1D? Why did Matthew Libatique shoot all of "Black Swan's" night scenes on the 7D? Why did Gale Tattersall shoot the entire 7th season of House entirely on the 5D?
@EdgePointProductions I meant that RED cameras in general are 25k + (the RED ONE being $25,000), and the better ones (such as this one) being a ton more hahaha
Certainly it's big by SLR standards, but again you could buy a less expensive DSLR and only use Epic for more specific subject that requires the extra resolution and you still have a cinema cam. With 4K, 5K with the still frame option they also will dip into medium format conversations with studio photographers that have been trying to move into cinematography for years, so overall I think it's pretty smart on Red's part.
I don't mind that it will take still images. A large chunk of people that are buying the camera are independents, so the point is to get the same quality still that will blow-up nicely you would have to drop another couple $K?
Closing statement. The epic, in my mind, does not need to shoot still images. It seems slightly arbitrary. it is a movie camera, and we all know its going to do that very well. Rather than a still mode, why cant we get a quicker slow motion frame rate? say 300-320 fps at full res? THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!! yes high processing i understand, but how long did it take to produce the still system? I think RED could add some more cinematic features.
A digital still camera (be it dSLR, medium format, or anything else for that matter) for $50,000 right now is producing a compelling image, and also squeezing that image into anywhere from 40 to 60 mega pixels. A 4k image is somewhere between 11 and 12 megapixels. 5k is between 17 and 18 i believe. Thats almost comparable to the 5d if the epic is able to shoot that size image. the 5d is about $5000 for a nice package. as far as the bang for the buck in the still world I think the 5d is ahead
I am looking at purchasing a RED ONE myself, and for the base package i am looking at upwards of $52000. If i bought the epic i imagine it would be a bit more. Now if im spending that much money on one thing there is a specific reason i want that particular item, it does what im buying it for better than any thing comparable at around the same price. which is what I feel about the RED ONE at this point in time.
The RED ONE i do not know as much about, ive only been in the business for a year and a half now(in comparison to my six in photography), but I do know it produces a beautiful image as well. It doesnt capture pictures, but why would you need it to? normally you are shooting a movie with it correct? the 4k that the red produces is not going to be trumped by any dSLR that comes at least for a few years, and the epics 5k definitely wont.
@keithdatSKRdrift The Epic was not made to trump the 5D. The owner of RED endorses Canon lenses and uses Canon DSLRs for his own photography! Adding a still feature means nothing but more features! Do you really think they spent a lot of time working on capturing a still picture on a device made for capturing images? No. They added it as an additional feature. And shooting at 300fps is not a matter of time, it's a matter of technology and price.
So the epic is geared to take the 5d and stomp all over it? what is the megapixel rating on the still images? The advantage of the 5d mk I over other CANON models was the 35mm sensor. It has 12 megapixels and is still considered a profesional still camera that produces beautiful images. the 5d mk II brought in not only video, which it seems thats all its known for, but a 21 megapixel image.
its basicaly dedicated towards creating digital cameras for big movie production all over the planet but making it comparatively cheap against mainstream cameras such as the panavsion genesis or the phantom 65.
The current DSLR HD camera have pretty quickly reached their limitations. Canon won't allow much more ability on a Prosumer camera and word is they are building a full motion camera based on the CMOS chi, which means that they won't want to under cut that market by building too much more it the current cameras. So in terms of real cine shooting the red Epic is definitely lots of bang for your buck. 5K for goodness sake!!!
Red does not seem to be the Bell of the NAB ball anymore.. Good to see they are forging ahead, but the DSLR market has really brought them back to earth I feel.
Sure RED is technically better in many ways but really do many people actually need it? People will just get a DSLR because its relatively cheap as chips. And does the Job.
RED sales forcasts will have to have been pulled back huge.

Hey everyone, info about the Red Epic is now available on the RED website. I was waiting to see how much the Epic costs. It costs $58,000. OUCH!
mikeyw02 10 months ago
A 5D, 7D, or T3i is just as good in my opinion.
jasedotcom 7 months ago
@jasedotcom Yes, but they all shoot video at 2k resolution. This camera shoots video at 5k.
mikeyw02 7 months ago
@jasedotcom no u retard this cost 20x as much for a reason, RAW video, 5K, proper audio, etc.

Let me get this straight. Is this camera better than the red one in every way? (Except the price).
