  • Fantastic ! Luv Ya Mary

  • いい曲だ。60年代が沸いてくる

  • It's almost like she's singing about a dog or some other wild animal that she's taken in from the street and tried to domesticate, isn't it? But in the end she has to set him/it free, cause he's heart...is out in the streets. Thought-provoking lyrics there, to be sure. I also love the line "He grew up running free, he grew up and then he met me..." Brilliant!

  • just simply amazing

  • Wow. Radio doesn't do justice. Thank you youtube.

  • how do you let him out in the street when you care about him a lot

  • whatever happened to real girl bands and proper teen songs with stories about boys, girls and broken hearts? These days it's grown up women trying to sell sex to under 14s.

  • They were so beautyful

  • Does anyone have the version of the dutch girl group "The Hearts of Soul"?

  • this is where amy winehouse got so much of her inspiration. RIP to amy and marge and Mary Ann may you all RIP and live on/rock on Betty and mary. im 16 and love this group so much. rock on in heaven and on earth, brave girls

  • @starestrellakal Top comment x

  • Amazing: this is a live performance, NOT lip-synched as was common then (and even now), with all its immediacy and slight pitch imperfections that only serve to make it more real. This one is IMO their best song; thank you for this rare find.

  • very very similar to the drums' video for down by the water

  • @LipstickManiac Sure the Drums were paying homage.

  • Back in the days of real music. Not like the junk (so called music) that's performed today.

  • @cairparavel11

Don't be pompous. This was a POP song back in the 60s, considered the same as contemporary radio today. Is it of better quality? That's subjective. But to generalize all music "today" as "junk" is pretty stupid.

  • @hightimesbruce I disagree; pop is indeed dead, musicwise that is. And that's objectively provable, since all melodies, compositions, sounds and themes have been drained out by now. One can only invent so much within the boundaries of human hearing. Also, contemporary radio today merely tells us how easy it is to make a record compared to how it had tp be done, say, between 1950 and 1990. The amount of crap released today is incomparable to the diamonds of work required to be released back then.

  • Great song!! This was the ultimate girl group!!!

  • wonderful song

  • whos the 2 dumb asses , maybe they thought this was Lady Goo Goo?

  • One of the most under-rated songs of all time. It's truely an undiscovered gem to many people.

  • i like blondies version

  • @atlan61 Debbie is good....But the shangs are the genius behind it...there original hit is more complicated and mysterious... “They’re very intricate, especially vocally. They’re the hardest things for my current band to do. They’re syncopated and metered. You have to be right on the money. It’s complicated – more so than most music.” quoted by Mary Weiss in an interview..Mary is back and still singing strong with a new sound...her new CD is dangerous game

  • The shangs were ahead of there time....pure genius

  • Mary W's younger sister Betty missing again.

  • The Best!!! The Twins are really cool and Mary is gorgeous. This song is really good.

It's definitely one of the greatest records of the 60's no doubt.

  • black spandex oh my god.....beats Ginger

  • Awesome, I just discovered the Shangri'las too and I'm in Love...

    What shitty music now adays

  • I discovered the Shangri Las yesterday. I'm in love with this song in particular - beautiful! The Ganser twins seem so bad-ass.

  • And I am, Mr. Stupid, thinking that Blondie had an original song!

  • It's amazing how they got screwed out of most of their money

  • Why are the Shangri-Las NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame yet?!

  • Mary !!!

  • check out The Drums Down by The water. they did pretty much the same video.

  • i'm still out in the streets smokin dope and sniffin glue-- this song won't change me.

  • In my eyes the most of todays pop singers are nothing but autotune-voiced sexual robots. They just don't have the same attitude like the Shangri-Las, Dusty Springfield, Sandie Shaw, and many more did, nowadays. Oldie pop singers had their voice, they didn't need to take their clothes off.

  • Super fabulosas, las amo desde Venezuela!!!

  • I love this! Thanks for sharing it.

  • The Ganser Twins are truly missed! RIP M and M.

Mary and Liz--love to you both!

    This song is so haunting.

  • wonderful stuff thankyou

  • It is sad that the Ganser twins (Mary Anne and Margie) are no longer with us. They would have pleased that a new generation have discovered quality music, instead of that Jenny From the Bedroom/Snoop Kitty Kat nonsense.

  • @Soapking1965 Do you mean 'jenny from the block' and 'snoop doggy dogg'?

  • nice, really nice

  • so psychodelic...

  • this is awesome ...

  • Very cool to see again. So Thanks!

  • Truth and beauty - beauty and truth. What more do you want? A biscuit?

  • Great! This group continues to influence new artists both musically and stylistically to this day.

  • fantastic !! Blondie did this as well.

  • Hey there. This is so cool. I love this song since the 1st day I heard it. And now can see the girls who sang it. Notice also you have Alizee vids. Me a big fan too!

  • Literally poured into those outfits.

  • Great sound

  • they look such beautiful take-no-shit women, i seriously can't watch this without going to pieces, gorgeous, thanks for posting and introducing me to this tune/performance

  • @STEPASAUR - natch, they're all JERSEY GIRLS! (The original ones -- not the foul mouthed, drunken pigs you see today)

  • @MsJollycholly Actually they're all from New York City (Queens).

  • @STEPASAUR mary wiess is the deffinition of sexy. if you look up the word, you will see a picture of her.

  • only debbie harry and chryssey hynde compare--- well maybe pat benatar and joan jett

  • @whiskey6actual grace slick?

  • These girls not only rock, but could probably kick your ass!

  • This version is so much better than the studio version. I'm going to see if I can find a better copy of the recording from this video.

  • I agree, and it sure sounds like Ellie Greenwich is helping with the background vocals here.

  • no she is not all shangs

  • Gee whiz, they are just something else! Mary has to be the FIRST cool rock chick.

  • now that I look at it, especially from today, the Shangri Las were really the first female punk band.

  • totes! inspiration for runaways, go go's and many more amazing ladies.

  • Notice Liz is missing here, as she often was.... I wonder if she regrets not touring with the group and kind of minimizing her involvement in those days, now, looking back on it? Mary Weiss is around and you can find an interesting interview from her here on YouTube if you just scroll down a few pages, etc. The twins (Marge and Mary Ann) have both, sadly, passed away. But the Shangri-Las were a one-of-a-kind group and their music lives on here on YouTube and in our memories!

  • I didn't Ellie Greenwich died until reading this post. What a wonderful songwriting talent. RIP!

  • Ellie Greenwich, who wrote this song died today. the Shangri-Las always said this was their best song...

  • The Shangs ARE the best girl group! Why the Hell doesn't radio play more Shangs! All they play is the Supremes and a select few other girl groups! It's not right. RIP M and M.

  • @BeezerTwo Just like classic rock radio stations!!! they only play certain hits all the time,, like the beatles, rolling stones etc,, Not so much Jethro Tull,Uriah Heep,audience,etc..just like the Shangs they were all ahead of there time.....it's all about commercialism...keep on Rockin Mary

  • @budmangt2 Yeah, I hear ya loud and clear! I can't get our oldies station here to play any Ronettes songs. Hardly ever hear one by the Shangri-Las either.

  • Shangri-Las: Rolling Stones of girl groups.

Now I have to figure out who the Beatles of girl groups was! LOL

  • Probably the Spice Girls - over-hyped, over-merchandised...

  • I disagree. The Beatles were never over-hyped. Over merchandised? Yeah, but it's still funny that companies would create egg cups with their likenesses or their names on it.

Would it be wrong for me to say the Ronettes were the Beatles of girl groups? Their songs were more upbeat and they dressed slightly more girly than the Shangs. Thanks for your input, everyone!

  • You are dead on w/your analogy of the Shangri-las. They were the "Bad Girls of Rock & Roll" ie: The Rolling Stones. Their songs were like mini-operas in 3 acts. Can you imagine girls back in the early 60's wearing tight skin catsuits. They took more chances then any other girl group back then did.

  • For a more of an edge song. Check-out the Shangri-las hit " I Can Never Go Home Anymore" This to me is a classic.....

  • All their songs are "spooky". lol I like it!!

  • When i grow up i want to be a shangri-la. i wonder if mary would make me go on stage in drag ?

  • Leader of the pack was always one of my fav songs but until i got computerized i thought the shangs wore just 1 hit wonders . my decent into addiction began with this vid .these girls are great.imo leader is'nt even there best song . thank you very much for the vid meow, the bills for my shangs cd's and my burned out cd player are in the mail ,thay should be ariving at your place sometime soon.

  • This is so atmospheric in bare black and white. Love it. Thank You for uploading it!

  • Thanks, nthglasScotland! "Atmospeheric" was EXACTLY the word I tried to find somewhere in the back of my head!

  • I LOVE the "nasal" quality of her voice! It works with the lyrical quality of the songs. They were one of the best girl groups ever...(the white version of The Supremes, if you will)...In fact, I always thought the Shagri-Las was a black group until a few years ago...and I'm 43!

  • what a classic touch the lights down do on them, great performance, you go ladies

  • He don't!

    oh man, i love them.

  • I was at there concert at Stonybrook N.Y., when the played it as thier new song. A good song, a good album, but they still had there days numbered., Ever hear of a guy named Hendrix?

  • 1952kid, ever heard of Pet Sounds? Good Vibrations?

  • Amazing! Surreal lighting and the Ganser Twins with the hand gestures...epic adventures in song that only the Shangri-Las can do justice to.

  • Oh, I forgot the Ronnettes. The Stones were their opening act.

  • The Beatles and Rolling Stones were in the same years, it was an older type style of music the girls had. In 1964 alot of bands knew it was all over for them when the British Invasion hit, including the Beach Boys. I dont know if you were around in the 1960's,thats how i remember it.

  • A lot of our groups were hot in Europe when the British groups took over here. The Beach Boys, The Shangs, ect. very popular in Europe. We wanted them and they wanted us.

  • Pure American 1965 great teenage song,no british invasion influence in this yet. If you missed living in the 1960's this will bring you there.

  • i remember hearing them on the radio in the 1960's and thought it was an oldies band, 1950 style, they had a nostalgic sound even when thier songs were new.

  • Huh?

The Shangri Las had a VERY modern sound at that time.

The Shirelles had a 50's vibe perhaps or maybe the Chiffons ... but certainly not this group. They had an "edge" that was pretty unique at the time. Just my opinion.

  • i agree very much!!

  • I agree with your description of an "edge" the Shangri-Las had that the the Chiffons ("He's so fine") and the Shirelles (Soldier Boy) didn't have. Shangri-Las had a pouty, innocent little bad-girl sound the others didn't have. They sang songs of the girl that would, but only would with the right guy...but were still flirts...in a "girl-next-door" kind of way...

  • It was the same sound that the Shirelles and Chiffons had, simply that Phil Spector took it up a couple of notches or two and added a bit of a gritty edge to it.

  • To bad someone doesn't post a cleaner sounding recording of this great song.

  • one of my all time favorite songs.

have loved it for 40 years!

  • This is on Debbie Harrys 1999 No Exit CD

  • Well...it's a Blondie album. The demo version of it is on their self-titled album, too.

  • very good song

  • Brilliant,i'm sad to say i'm nearing 40 and the leader of the pack was the only song i'd heard of from the Shangri-las.After hearing this song and the others posted on you-tube i'm ordering the Myrmidons of Melodrama from amazon. Were they well known in Europe?

  • yeah; those of us familiar with billboard and the offshore radios - dutch radio veronica used the doves' cry from walking in the sand for a jingle - knew them all

  • Does any one know what is sung after the lines I know that something's missing inside& I know I've Got to set him free?

  • I know that something's missing inside... something's died.. he's still in the street.

I know I've got to set him free... he's gotta be out in the streets.

  • Does anyone know what 's sung between something's missing in side and something's died?

  • "something's wrong"

  • Thank you,beh

  • The Shangri-las were ahead of their time in so many ways. The voices are pure, the aura is beautiful and for me, the music of the Shangri-las is timeless. These girls are as magnificent today as they were when I first heard them perform "Remember" back in 1964.

  • What I love about Shindig clips is that the house band re-recorded the songs, and the results often sounded better than the actual record!!! This track sounds punchier!!! Great Wellingtons/Blossoms harmony during the middle of the song too.......

    Tony

    TOny

  • I have to agree w/you. The arrangement on this clip is better than the record.

  • Cameraman kinda had a crush on the twins, didn't he? Well, I guess it's nice for them to get some camera time too.

The atomosphere is great though, great lighting and choreography- really haunting.

  • Yeah, try listening to Brittney then to this class act.

  • puts 99% of todays acts to shame.

  • Great job..thanks for uploading...

  • Chiaroscuro

  • Pure BRILLIANCE...timeless and as moving NOW as when they first recorded it! THANKS for posting!

  • Their third masterpiece...wow!

  • sharleen spiteri is Scottish..... and she's wank!

  • a french artist called sharleen spiteri used some of this melody.

  • This is so cool! They don't do stuff like this anymore...

Welll....actually, Duffy did a similar platform thing for her video "Mercy". Not quite the same, but still neat.

  • No it's not "just a copy!!"

I carefully cropped it and re-set the aspect ratio to what it needed to be, did quite some adjustments on the level scale. Also did a lot of sharpening. Not to mention the changes I made to the audio-source of this tape.

  • @Meowbay mary weiss that Out in the streets is her favorite shangri las song

  • Indeed very cool standing still there and the style of it all, and the quality of the recording with the darkness all around them and the thin shiny aura around them....COOL!

  • I just read up on them. There are really 4 members. The fourth being the lead singer's sister. She didn't like to tour or be in the spotlight. She sang on the records and even sang lead on many album tracks - including "Leader of the Pack" - easily their most famous song. x

  • Ermagod. I love, love, love this performance! I love how they are in silhouette at the beginning and how they just stand still and pose. It has a cool, eerie feel to it. x

  • the shangs are or were yummy

  • He don't comb his hair like he did before. And he don't wear those dirty ole black boots no more.....set him free he's gotta be "Out In The Streets".....When I say I'm Love YOU BES' BELIEVE I'M IN LOVE.....LUV!!!! Shangri-Las RULE! BAD GURLS...LOVE IT. THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING!!!

    Tappin' Toes In Texas

  • I LOVE your restorations- thank you! Ace pick, this one.
