  • Great show guys. Definitely ' The Cinefiles' strong suit is discussing less well known films, or films and movie-makers that aren't entirely mainstream. Also, surely the recent documentary on Roger Corman could be a starting point for your hoped for episode about him. Thanks for another year of interesting, knowledgeable and humorous discussion of movies.

  • what edwin said about tim ribins watch the scene and saying "this is really clever" is the problem i have with a lot of liberal film. There is a level of smugness from the makers, that make it annoying to watch. Even if you agree with what the film is saying.

  • @badhead As I stated, I'm not a democrat or a republican, but in order to make a successful film on a political subject, you can't be one-sided, or your message wouldn't get through to some people.

  • @badhead It's also a trademark of '90s indie filmmaking. Bcomes annoying quickly. That's one reason why some actors shouldn't direct themselves in movies. In fact, I don't like directors casting themselves in major parts because it's usually a sign of a vanity project. Clint Eastwood is the only one I think has been able to pull it off constantly. Cassavettes only took small parts in his films because he couldn't afford to pay someone. That is the only time a director should act in his films.

  • I´m surprised again that you didn´t even mention Network.

It´s about media manipulation and corporationism.

You guys did a show about its director Sydney Lumet and you also didn´t mention it. Have any of you seen that film? it f´n awesome. I think you could and should spend a whole show just talking about that one film.

    Peace

  • @dottoreguzmanrulz Believe it or not, we discussed this on an older episode that wasn't uploaded for some reason. Perhaps, one day, we'll get to it.

  • @dottoreguzmanrulz yo! Eddie is incorrect! The show where we get into Network is on our Screenwriter ep (it was a part of our Paddy Chayefsky discussion). For some reason it won't let me post the link so you'll have to search it on your lonesome.

  • @germkanoodle Eric is correct. I knew we discussed it, but couldn't remember that it was our Screenwriter episode. Please check it out and let us know what you think.

  • @dottoreguzmanrulz I believe they've briefly discussed about a dozen times.

  • You could do a show on good/bad political/war movies like 1984, Brazil, Battleship Potemkin, Come and See (1985), The Comedians, House of Cards, Novecento, Eat the Rich, Reunion (1989), Red Dawn, They Have Changed Their Face, Novecento, The Baader Meinhof Complex, Year of the Gun, Land of the Blind, Mephisto. Colonel Redl, Hanussen or even Rapa Nui and The Man Who Would Be King.

  • Good show! Bob Roberts is critiquing the system from the other side - not the players but the voters who build creatures like Roberts because they want to believe in his truthiness. Not all of them are disgruntled ex factory employees. Roberts has to be a "righty" because the worst a lefty can be (these days) is a crook. A righty can make much more damage if he adds loud nationalism in the mix. Bob is very ambiguous. He might be just a "normal" crook, but that murder leaves everything opened.

  • Nice choices, but aren't there intelligent films out there that reflect the conservative side of the argument too? I know all you guys are pretty liberal, but it would've been nice to see some picks that didn't just reflect a particular worldview over and over again. Very interesting episode though!

  • @nilan3000 An intelligent 'conservative' film? Good question. Honestly, I can't think of one.

  • @MCFoltz Really, it is a good question. I really can't think of one. If someone could recommend some, I would watch them and give them a fair review. Really.

  • @MCFoltz Lol neither can I. And before I forget, congratulations ;)

  • @MCFoltz If you google " great conservative film" (or any similar variation) you'll find articles were conservatives try to claim movies like 12 Angry Men, It’s a Wonderful Life, Ghost Busters, Network (seriously) etc. There's even a lot of people that claim David Lynch films are conservative.

So, to answer your question. No, their are no intelligent conservative films, OR any intelligent conservative movie goers.

  • @nilan3000 There's not many out there. The ones that come out are so right wing that they are only for their base. One of the Zucker Brothers just made a huge bomb that took a very conservative angle called An American Carol.

  • @cinefiles I can't think of any either (certainly not English language films in the American political context, which I'm not familiar with), will see if I can find some and post them on the Facebook page. Greetings all the way from Sri Lanka btw.

  • Great show you guyssssssss!

  • Great show you guy!

  • @natewheatshelf Thank you, but I got to give the credit to Mike for this episode as it was his idea.

  • @natewheatshelf Many thanks for watching.

  • how about a david mamet episode?

  • That's a good idea. Be sure to go over to the facebook page and recommend it there.

  • I remember watching Advice and Consent when i was a little kid on the peruvian TV. i was so little that my father had to explain to me about the gay subplot. I've been trying to remember the name of this movie for years. until now: Good you make an episode out of the so called "genre movies". Greetings from Sweden!

  • @guely55 I was surprised how well the gay subplot was handled for a film of that era.

  • As I said on the facebook group. You guys need to do a Cronenberg Vs Lynch topic.

  • I'll definitely check out those titles. It's nice to see some reviews of older films. My only complaint is that often when you guys do review classic movies you express surprise at how forward-thinking they are 'for the time'. There's plenty of sophistocated stuff from the olden days, and Hollywood has always been pretty political. Anyway I'm not a left-wing type but the movies you've reviewed do sound good.

  • @WalterLiddy We try to pick films that are ahead of their time. There's a lot of films that are dated, but the whole point of this show was to discuss history repeating itself.

  • Bulworth would be one. I think it's flawed. But it shares certain aspects in common with Bob Roberts-albeit one's an out and out comedy, and the other's a satire.

    The Contender is another.

  • @ebuzzmiller34 That would have been a good choice. What's funny about Bulworth was that it was originally written as a serious film and evolded into a comedy.

  • Good show

  • I generally avoid political films because of the exact reason Eric stated: most films try to make a 'good' person and a villain. These films are not interested in tackling a deep subject, they are all about demonizing the enemy (whichever side that may be). But, based upon this review, I may have to look into the films you discussed. They sound very interesting.

  • Foltzie, even though he panned Argento and Goblin, is still the man. Christine O'Donnell needs to stop with the witchcraft and make way for tomorrow.

  • i put the laptop on top of the fridge and watch cinefiles while i make dinner, everynite. new epp makes it ez'r lol my gf can cook. good epp

  • @feyd8194 meant gf cant cook. im talking to myself

  • @feyd8194 We one day hope to start uploading video podcasts of the show for upload on itunes. This was you can watch us on your ipod.

  • It kinda ticks me off when a supposed 'film geek' says he or she doesn't like black and white movies. A story is a story...anyway, great episode as always, CANT wait for the next one!

  • @BikiniDeathSquad I actually think Black and White adds so much to some films, especially those old Twilight Zone episodes. I can't imagine them working as well in color. Can you?

  • I actually have not seen any of these films, but I have seen A Face in the Crowd and The Candidate, and I'm interested in anything like that. Awesome show.

  • I generally avoid black and white films but I'm gonna watch all these movies.

  • @Fakieflps Please watch these films. B/W adds so much, especially those old Twilight Zone episodes. I can't imagine them working as well in color. Can you?

  • Very interesting topic, and I'd like to see all these movies (saw BOB ROBERTS when I was younger, but remember very little of it).

  • Brilliant show again guys. I have to admit I haven't seen ANY of these! Looks like I have some good films to watch soon. Thanks!

  • i really enjoyed this episode very different and interesting topic, and for what its worth i will be checking out the films you guys talked about as i have done before with many other films you have talked about and recommended i look forward to the next show. i would love it if you guys would do a episode on the films of Robert Redford but i get the feeling you will be some time soon take it easy

  • @redbaron932 We usually stick to films by directors or certain topics, but perhaps, we could one discuss the films Redford directed.

  • @cinefiles thank you for replying to my comment i appreciate it, glad to hear you may do a show on Robert Redford one day i look forward to it. I am assuming that it was Edwin that replied back to my comment anyway take it easy you guys look forward to the next show and hopefully many more

  • The Hayes code started being in enforced in 1934, and Black Legion was released in 1937 under the Hayes code.

Anyway, great show. Another great example for me would be Ace in the Hole, which you guys must've seen (wasn't there a Billy Wilder episode?).

  • This is one of your best episodes. Every film you discussed has made me curious to search them out.

  • @thejobloshow Thank you for watching. Our goal is to alert people to good movies. If we're made you want to see a film, we're doing our job.

  • Bout time we are getting more Cinefiles episodes haha. Very good episode. Keep em coming, more eps the better.

  • @colemartinst123 It was just uploaded not even 5 minutes ago. How do you know this is a good episode? :)

  • @cinefiles C'mon. He's just keeping in tone with the subject matter. He's 'setting a prescient tone' by knowing that the episode will be awesome before he sees it; they always are. I'm gonna watch in a bit though, been trying to get another Amicus anthology horror film review vid up and been having problems with it. I was hoping Ed would watch my Tales From the Crypt review as I know it's one of his favourites, likewise my Asylum review for Eric, if you guys ever have some time that is.

  • @HorrorOfMike Just a little joke. I'll do my best to watch soon. Been extremely busy working on a few projects. Sept is a busy month for me as I'm going on a trip, and Stooges film is coming out. Speaking of Stooges, did you see the clip on Rolling Stone? If not, check out my FB wall.

  • @cinefiles Haha, i ment a very good episode choice Lol. Ive just finnished watching it and i wasent wrong, it was a good choice for an episode lol.

  • @colemartinst123 Haha, i ment a very good episode choice Lol. Ive just finnished watching it and i wasent wrong, it was a good choice for an episode lol.

  • @colemartinst123 I was just pulling your chain. Glad you enjoyed the episodes - you'll be happy to know that we're having another taping next week.

  • @cinefiles Oh, im an idiot lol. But great to here your having anouther taping. But great episode, gonna have to check out all these films you mentiond.
