Why would they pick up some function in less than a century since non-reproduction was put on the shelf (not counting religious celibate cooks, but religion is a whole different vice)

As to what what evolutionary advantage it provided, one can only speculate. Fossils of australopithicus indicate that there were indeed non-reproducing members of early societies who likely helped with child-rearing, thereby freeing up other members to hunt, gather, etc.

homosexuality is probably not a modern (in scope of thousands of years) problem, we can't know because the causes are unknown and are probably different in each species and within species of animals. Nonetheless removal of non-reproducing component from human population will not hinder it's proliferation. Having said that, most cancers and debillitating genetic disorders have been shown to carry beneficial side-effects, so I wouldn't be shocked if that were the case with homosexuality as well.

the chose is in the fact that whether you believe what is right and what is wrong, everyone experiences the thoughts "am I gay?" or "do I love a person same sex with me". But those thoughts do not last long if you don't let them. Everyone gets bad thoughts e.g. "should I do drugs?" If you block them out and say "that is wrong, I shouldn't think like that" then you can be saved from them.
