Domingo is a great artist , he was a nice Don Jose in his young days.. Later - he was a great Samson, Othello.. well, in any opera, but NOT in Carmen. Don Jose IS for Carreras....( I even prefer Shikoff to Domingo - as Jose).Well, great artists have "their roles" and could be comparatively weak sometimes.(ex . Carreras is weak in "Pagliacci", IMO.)

And Carmen - IS for Baltsa.... So - this is the BEST pair, Carreras and her, I believe.

As for Obrastsova- never liked her too much.

I love how dramatic Baltsa & Carreras are in the final scene, singing in an almost Wagnerian manner (Bizet's score for this scene was indeed inspired by Wagner). It's also a pre-verisimo scene that verisimo operas like Pagliacci & Cavalleria Rusticana would later imitate. Baltsa & Carreras are marvelous. I also love Grace Bumbry & Jon Vickers who are equally powerful in the finale

This is my ultimate Carmen/Jose combination. Singing, acting. How the heck can they get the notes so right and maintain that fantastic acting? Carreres/Jose is an utter maniac, but his voice is lovely and he still sounds maniacal, not pretty.
