how is nirvana overrated , when todays kids listen to rihanna and shit .. besides nirvana revolutionized the whol music industry , only coz of Nirvana tha names of some great underground local bands and genres are heard and appreciated..
If you think THIS is hot, see him strip with that special look in his eyes, on the official music video version, in the DVD Best Of Depeche Mode. It wasn't my favorite song until I saw that video. I no longer even remember what my fav song was, by them, it's been blown away by that video! Check my channel Depeche Mode playlist for over 60 videos of DM, plus the favorite official stripping video ;-)
VERY FEW bands can get away with all of the various types of music that they put out and CONTINUE to be successful. Depeche Mode case in point. Think about it, from Photographic to I Feel You. A difference of night and day.
Boy bands are not usually composed of accomplished musicians. Depeche Mode write, arrange and play all their own music. And they've been around for over 30 years
They are a perfect mix of dark electronica, guitars, industrial and totally mind blowing vocals. Love them and other electronic influenced groups like Gary Numan, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Massive Attack, Kosheen, Front Line Assembly, Unkle, Cabaret Voltiare, AllFlaws
@TheDarkFrontier : No, they aren't. Maybe Oasis but Nirvana and U2 are amazing. Particularly U2 pre - year 2000. They kept innovating their sound. Just listen to the track Zooropa. It's amazing. Expected more sense from a Depeche Mode fan! :P
They are. Everyone remembers Nirvana only for Smells Like Teen Spirit, which to be honest isn't as great as people keep making it out to be. Sure, they sent Grunge mainstream (Exactly the opposite to what Cobain kept on saying he wanted), but there are better grunge bands out there, i.e. Soundgarden. U2 are good, their music is good, but imo I wouldn't put them in the amazing category :P
@DieMenschMaschine85 : Doesn't matter what everyone thinks. I'm just talking about the music. Maybe Amazing was an overstatement for Nirvana but not U2. Either way Nirvana did do some lovely work - particularly Unplugged In New York. Also if they're only remembered for SMLTS then it's like saying Led Zeppelin are only remembered for Stairway to Heaven. You see where I'm coming from? Anywho we love Depeche Mode and that's all that matters :P
@TheDarkFrontier how is nirvana overrated , when todays kids listen to rihanna and shit .. besides nirvana revolutionized the whol music industry , only coz of Nirvana tha names of some great underground local bands and genres are heard and appreciated..
And yes its true that their music and lyrics are simple , but so is APPLE !
So what, what does that have to do with the music? Influence and change of things is just a by-product of a band's music. Unless Nirvana deliberately set out to revolutionise the music industry or influence underground bands, which I severely doubt they would have.
I never said their music and lyrics weren't simple. Kurt was a good lyricist, but the music that was put to those lyrics was fairly mediocre most of the time. There are far better grunge bands out there than Nirvana.
Im pretty sure that all u listend from Nirvana is "nevermind " and a few other catchy/pop ,
now Wipers for example were a pretty good band in the 80's , but it's Kurt one of the few who managed to cover a pretty darn good song , and make it even better , I'm talkin bout "D7"
And bout the music being "mediocre" ... u have like lots of 80's mainstream rock , with lots instruments performing and this "complex music" , but so what , does that mean the music is more qualitativ?
For your generalised information, I have listened to a lot of Nirvana's songs, and while they definitely shine on some tracks, the music they put with their lyrics is often not what it could have been. When you listen to the level of experimentation and musicianship that say, Soundgarden were toying with in the same genre, it diminishes the accolades that Nirvana have racked up.
Also, I never recall making a statement that the 80's mainstream rock bands made "complex music" as you so "quote" from me. That's also an unfair comparison to make, especially since Nirvana was generally a band of the 1990s, and the genre they played was completely different to that which bands say, Def Leppard played. If you're going to compare it to the 80s, then I'll say Def Leppard were among the prime of their genre. Nirvana weren't. For me, Soundgarden and AIC are better bands.
This is music! Not like todays garbage! I mean come on; Poker Face? Telephone? Papparazzi? Straight up mainstream bullshit! Down with that chick with a dick Gaga! THUMBS UP for DEPECHE MODE!
Great as always, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING, will ever beat the Devotional tour. The height of their popularity, and Dave's vocals, I remember seeing them on that tour three times, twice in London. I've NEVER been so moved, so sexually charged, so drug through the entire gamut of human emotion as I was on that tour. Look up Depeche Mode Devotional DVD. The performances are legendary, thanks to DM and the amazing visuals of Anton Corbijn. I hope they live forever and make music til I DIE!!!

@sseematter, I like DM's recent material, particularly the LPs "Ultra," and "Sounds of the Universe." I just don't like the traditonally rocky way they now deliver it LIVE.
Depeche Mode's been such an innovative band over the years, breaking many taboos of what stadium "rock" can and should be. I hate it when they sometimes regress and think they're somehow in Whitesnake, as appears to be the case here.
@SKWalrus I must say I don't agree at all. They are into the music, and they get carried away, so much is true, but it's not a bad thing at all. If you like the studio edition, listen to that one instead. (:
You misunderstand me. I love it when they "get into it," and I've seen DM play LIVE thirteen times. I just don't like when their music gets too rocky, as it's sometimes done since 1993. Bringing out a guitar now and then on 'World Violation' is one thing, but this AC/DC-like rock act of theirs is too much. Bring back the synths (and, lose the drummer)!
@SKWalrus I reckon DM's live shows are the best they have ever been thanks to the drummer. I don't think I've heard a drummer this tight or hard, and he's fucking about here. I was at this gig and it was nuts. Although their O2 areana gig is prolly the best concert I have been to.
Christian's a talented drummer; he was great @ Dave's 2007 iTunes solo show. But a drummer doesn't belong on stage for a DM concert proper. It's like Kraftwerk employing a string bass. Not to pull rank, but I saw DM once in 88, 4x in 90 and 3x in 93-94. Martin flirting w/guitars on stage in 88-90 was novel, and Alan tinkering w/drums in 93-94 was bearable. But w/so much on guitar and a drummer on stage, DM's now just another rock band. Keep the drummer for Dave's solo outings.
@SKWalrus We're all entitled to our opinions. Mine is that they have evolved for the better when it comes to live gigs thanks to drums and guitars, which reflects Gore's ability to write full-on music. I am opposed to pre-recorded live shows, which DM still has an element of (everything Fletch is supposed to play) and I cannot stand anything after SOFAD album wise, live, anything goes. Lets not forget they're still going 30 years on, that says a lot.
