The Reality is in the United States the Smart car is one of the smallest cars on the road. If you get T Boned or T Bone someone with a speed of 35 miles an hour the chances of you dying are definately going to be way higher then in a lager car. This is not Italy where the cars are small. I recently got into a car accident where the idiot decided to make an illegal left hand turn and wound up being T Boned. If that had been a smart car he would not have lived. I drive a Toyata Tundra.
I drive an '08 Mercury Grand Marquis. 4,300 pounds of automobile, won't flip over, and has 6 airbags. Hands down safest sedan. Plus I get 28 on the highway if I take my time.
look who cares how heavy or light the c300 may be, there are other tests that run them into brick walls or offset barricades. the point being is that the test proves if the smart car is in a head on collision there will be serious injuries in that car because of the impact reaching the passenger compartment
Smart car is a tin can trash heap. Hitting it was a C Mercedes, hardly their biggest or premium models. Heaven help them if some wandering drug dealer in an S 500 or Rolls whacked into the thing. No need for a coffin, just bury the lot. If you want to survive a car accident, drive slowly and surround yourself with quality steel and safety features. The bigger the better.
This is why I drive a ford excursion, Im not here to play fair. Dawin had a point, Plus these are dumb ass cars. Stupid car seats two, While mine seats eight and gets 25mpg with the diesel and tuner. passanger to fuel ratio Ex wins again.
@Neonspinnazz30 this is a real world crash test. smart cars aren't only going to run into other smart cars or walls. this is the crash test people need to see so we can get the misconceptions about the safety of these cars out of our minds. just because it is "unfair" doesn't mean it can't happen in real life
@pancakewafflebacon ... What was "unfair" about the test was that the IIHS compared the smart to 4 door cars (Yaris sedan, Fit Sport) in a larger class, and then it was given a car that weighs about the same as a mid-size SUV.
In comparison, the C300 weighs more than a Toyota Rav4 but weighs 200lb less than a 2010 Chevy Equinox.
On the IIHS comments, the Pres. claimed the smart to be poor against the average sedan when the C300 has the same weight properties of a SUV.

What would be fair, two Smarts crashing - two idiots hit each other? I'm a traffic cop and there are entire weeks that pass by without me seeing a Smart. Also, I've seen a number of crashes, never with Smart, but I tell you, car bouncing around like that is not good at all, I don't care about it's safety ratings! I'd ban them all.

Most sedans aren't nearly as heavy as a Mercedes C300.
I'd personally ban SUVs. Their idiot drivers think they have God Mode in the snow, they'll roll if you even think about going around a corner, and while they have the weight advantage, they aren't as safe as soccer moms and Ralph Nader say they are.
Really what this test proves is that, YES the smart is safe, BUT, it also has its limits, and those limits appear to be something that weighs as much as a SUV.
And on the IIHS site, in that 3 car comparison, the smart was the best of the three and not only was it the smallest but it was put against the heaviest of all three sedans.

Run a report on the smart car at the NHTSA site for proof!
Read the letters at safeandsmart dotcom for proof!
Example- F150 doing 45mph T-bones a smart car. Truck is totaled, smart driver is severely BRUISED!
Example- smart car doing 65mph hits a truck head-on. She breaks her wrist and WALKS AWAY!
More proof- auto insurance rates are low for smart cars, DUE TO THEIR SAFETY RECORD!

... So the misconception is really what was pushed into the smart. You see a sedan...but that sedan is VERY HEAVY...
What the IIHS comments should really say is:
The smart against a car weighing "xxxx" would do poorly as demonstrated in our test with the C300 which weighs "xxxx".
Instead, the writers were lazy and made a simple conclusion:
The smart did poorly against a vehicle that has equal safety ratings.
