You can buy denatured alcohol in stores like Home Depot or Lowes (Sometimes in the paint section). I never tried lamp oil, but it will probably not work, because it does not have enough energy and it would mess up the boiler with sooth.
The meaning of live steam is that the model loco actually runs on steam like a "real" steam train vs. electricity that is usually used to power model trains.
I bought it in Germany directly from Hielscher Miniature Steam, the manufacturer. I believe it is also available here in the US, from a couple of internet vendors.

They cost about $300 to $500 depending on the model and if you buy it assembled or as a kit.

You are not kidding!!! - I had a fire extinguisher next to me for that run.... :-)
They are great fun though and due to space limitations at home the only live steam I can use.
