Inefable. Absolute. Amazing. It was the BSO for a theatre play I wrote called "the hero", about a boy who dies in a war for his beloved. Words come short.
@523205227 This may be the most dramatic funeral march I've ever heard - as well as the finest and most touching. Funeral marches are not supposed to be more dramatic than this. Sombre, yes, but the fight is over. Death has won, and the survivors are left with their loss. G's grief was made worse by his feelings of guilt for not heeding the pleas of Nordraak and his father to be with him. G could not admit to his terror of further exposure to TB which had already destroyed his own left lung.
Beautiful, quite beautiful. Grieg, though a world famous composer of course, is much under-rated. This is a fabulous recording with some haunting images. I suspect Grieg loved his friend very much, what a wonderful piece of music to honour his passing! Thank you for posting... D
Please tell me where you got this recording I want to download it and I cannot find it on I-tunes. This is the best funeral march ever written BAR NONE!
Firstly, amazing piece of music but is this arrangement necessarily catching the true style? Overall, in my opinion, the triplets at the end of the bars are too short and detatched, when they should be smooth and flowing.
Examples of this are bar 1 and 3 in the trumpet and trombone as well as in the B section with the clarinets.
This is just my opinion that it is not capturing what the piece should be like.
668christina: What you are looking for is a dirge. A funeral march is not supposed to be melodramatic. It should be somber, reflective and respectful of the deceased. Other funeral marches such as Chopin's and Verdi's may be just as effective, but I have never heard one better than this.
@grantrummel This is Grieg's own orchestration for large wind ensemble and percussion (1867, rev. 1899). Grieg requested this version be played at his own funeral, but when he died, no competent wind ensemble was available, so his close friend Johan Halvorsen (1864 - 1935) had to quickly re-score it for the orchestral instruments that were available. He did an excellent job, but Grieg's own version is still best. (Halvorsen was married to Grieg's niece.)

we played this song yesterday at our christmas concert in church. i think it was the best!
but this interpretation is sometimes a little strange. listen at 5:35 and 5:51, the trumpets play very short hard tones, they don't fit in really.

´how's the last painting by friedrich called? the one with the ruin of a church or sthlt and the snow?

what a fantastic piece of work. very good paintings to accompany yet another piece by Grieg.
Thank you very much for the additional information also. Appreciated.
Keep up the good work!

It sounds thin. I'm used to doing this piece with a big brassensemble.
