I thought ubiquitous 32nd note blast beats were getting boring long before I ever heard Derek Roddy's comment. If people want to hear a five minute long single stroke snare role, then that's their idea of greatness. It's not mine. Blast beats are a tool like any other, like flam taps, and if overused become hackneyed. I'm staying true- to not wanting to hear endless blastbeats. Millions of drummers can play blastbeats now. Used creatively to serve the music, they're awesome.

To say you hate blast beats is like saying you hate double bass or using two hands to drum. It's stupid. Blast beats serve a purpose, which is to keep a high tempo and energy to the song, and since there are 8 billion different blast beats, it's hard to even pin it down. If you don't like high tempo or energy, why even be on a metal video at all?

but based on his technique, I think people like Tomas Haake are able to do it. Drumming in extreme metal needs a lot of precision and skill, a blast beat at the wrong moment and then you have to get your own band together :D

Elvin, Art, Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette..... genuises
