  • I just had a sweeet orgasm of chocolately goo! Hurray for Judaism!

  • Stalin definately wasn't this funny!

  • The dancer at the end is Leo Fuchs.

  • I, too, thought of Prof. Irwin Corey; but this guy makes Corey look like a rank amateur.

  • I don't speak a word of Yiddish, but this guy is a real pro in peak form. And, yes, Trotsky was Jewish.

  • Are there any videos of Menasha Skulnick floating around? He was the Clown Prince of the Yiddish theater. His recordings are hysterical, brilliant. I wish someone would post videos of Menasha on You Tube.

  • Yes, indeed, the cantor is Michael Rosenberg playing the role of his fictional character, Shepsl Kanarik. The dancer at the end is Leo Fuchs, not Menashe Skulnick.

I once had a conversation with Walter Matthau, who told me: "Everything I know about performing I learned from Michael Rosenberg." As a teen-ager, Matthau had a job selling soft drinks at Yiddish theaters in New York. Walter said he used to stop what he was doing to watch transfixed as Mikhel Rosenberg cavorted on stage.

  • Who is the fantastic dancer at the end of this clip? The announcer announces him as "Menasha Skulnick", but clearly it isn't Menasha -- i't's somebody else.

  • Look to the END of the video: THE DANCER IS INCREDIBLE!!!

  • Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • One of the most hilarious comedy bits I've ever seen!

  • yes its michel rosenberg

  • this is a great shtick!

  • The comedian is Irwin Corey.

  • Huh? Not a chance. Irwin Corey is still alive. He was born in 1914. He would have been a small boy when this was filmed. I guess not knowing something does not slow you down from saying it anyway!

  • It's Michael Rosenberg who did a similar routine in the 1937 yiddish film The Cantor's Son

  • remembers me of the 30s film "a cantor on trial" - the guy looks similiar to this one! (probably its the same one). funny sketch, and at the and comes leo fuchs and gives his show with "pep" and "jazz" ;-) very funny... i have to upload one time

  • Nope! The movie, Cantor on Trial features a cantor named: Louis 'Leibele' Waldman.

  • kvetching at its best

  • ;;laughs unto tears;;

I loved this. It's a little tough for me to follow his more spirited points, but what little I didn't catch still brought me to laughter by the fact his voice resembles Mel Blanc's!

  • was also published in the "Ghetzl" serias record of Michel Rosenberg.

    1) Ghetzl at the Baseball Game

    2 Ghetzl in a Bank

    and more.

  • whatis"Ghetzl"?

  • @elongadi name of a person

  • @elongadi Getzl is an old yiddish name used sometimes as the "John Doe" in Yiddish

  • Funny stuff.

  • who is that ? and what year was this taken ?

  • No, it's not Michel Rozenberg. Michel Rozenberg starred in the TV show "The Goldbergs." it's reall cantor-comedian Shepsil Kanarek doing one of his routines. His name is not listed in the cast of the movie Catskill Holiday.

  • It actually IS Michel Rosenberg (with an "s").

  • I thought Trotsky was too busy with revolutionary work to do comedy skits.

  • It's not Trotsky--he would have been wearing an ice pick rather than a hat.

  • This was really special. The first person I sent it to was my cantor. I wish there were more of these old skits in Yiddish to enjoy.

  • great to hear the old lingo spoken with gusto.

  • we have a hailiger zeeser yidalah here.

  • This is Michel Rozenberg, hes a classic, this is the only film of him that I have ever seen, unfortunately this is Borscht Belt so he probably didnt do to much film.

  • Just to confirm what someone already said, it's from a 1949 film called "Catskill Honeymoon," which you can find on DVD with a Google search. The loose premise is that a couple celebrates their 50th anniversary at the Young's Gap Hotel in the Catskills, but the real reason for the film is to showcase the kind of entertainment one would find at such a resort. This is like the bridge between vaudeville and the comedy that was popular on TV in the 50s and 60s (Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, etc.)

  • I believe this clip is from the movie Catskill Holiday.

  • VCJC in da Bronx needs this guy to wake the place up

  • I saw on the documentary NEXT TIME DEAR G-D PLEASE CHOOSE SOMEONE ELSE where this clip is credited to MONTICELLO, HERE WE COME! Does anyone know where I can find a copy of either one, I've been looking for years.

  • the first time i saw this was on PBS. it was cut. it was about jewish humor. i dont think any more movies and shows of michael rosenberg were televised. he does have records though and i know ehre you get them.

  • where do you get his records

  • My guess is that these are films that were later broadcast on TV. They were probably shown in Vaudeville Houses in the 30s and 40s.

I say this because of how young Menashe Skulnik is in the second clip.

I had only heard of Mikhl Rosenberg and never seen him...so for me this rocks.

    Thanks,

    A Harts Gedankte,

    Gitl

  • Thanks so much for that!!

  • fuyst i start slowy...slowly pavuyli.

    lol!

  • Does anyone understand the name of the great dancer in the last seconds of this wonderful piece?

  • It's Leo Fuchs, not Menasha Skulnik!

  • Thank you!

  • ich daf hubbin halb dozen rayer eyg!

    hahahahahahahah!!!!!!

ah sweet tzubrucin yiddisher mench finding the koyach!

    ha ha!

  • At 3:18 he actually says "It's alright, s'hot shoyn im shoyn lenger gevartn, etc" meaning, he waited that long he can wait a little longer.

  • This is Michel (pronounced Mikhl) Rosenberg doing one of his routines. He was a Yiddish comic. Shepsl Kanarik was one of his characters. Check out "The Best of Yiddish Vaudeville , Vol.1 - Michel Rosenberg" from Leisure Time Music.

  • Thank You

  • He's yammering on in Galitsish.

  • the egg!

    what a funny bit!

  • i cant stop watching this.

i find it a pleasure to watch.

i think people nowadays have forgotten about the Chazzanim of the old days.

Moshe Oysher was a legend of this time.

do you have any of his movies like the cantors son for example?

post some more old school stuff please

  • amazing. i'd love to know the source, and his name... thanks for posting!

  • I'm not sure of the source, his name is Shepsil kanarek.someone told me he also had a vinyl record of his comedy, which I would love to hear

  • Hysterical!
