of course if you were really stuck it would be best to winch yourself forward past the obstacle that has stopped you instead of back behind it where you may get stuck trying to go over it again. just a tip
I like your video and I'm wondering if you could please demonstrate this in an actual winching of getting the vehicle unstuck please?
I'm thinking of getting this when going off roading alone and I don't have aftermarket winch mount bumper so this thing is the only way. I checked out other hand winch but doesn't seem as solid as this.
I want to see how hard we would have to work to winch it out by hand and how capable it can handle the load stuck.
On fairly solid ground, wit that ratchet winch it would be fairly easy, though I imagine in mud you would be hard pressed to get the winch to gather. Also, that "tow hook" was actually a shipping tie down point, not a rated recovery point. Therefore, not safe to winch on as a bogged vehicle, in essence, weighs much more than the kerb weight. What rating does that cable have, as it looks like 2000lb marine cable? No cable weight either....bad day waiting to happen.
@getachefupya The tie down vs tow hooks on these Toyota trucks are the source of endless debate. That rear loop is identified as a tow point in the manual. Even ARB does not have built in shackle attachment points on their bumpers but instead reuses these factory front tow loops. This on the full 120 platform.(4runner/prado/FJ Cruiser/Surf) I have not read of any account that these tow loops have been pulled off during a recovery.
@getachefupya Even if they are tie down points....they would need to tie down and hold the weight of the truck and more. I've used them many times to recover and be recovered, with Fj cruiser, 4runner,and landcruiser. No issues. I do stay away from running starts. That I will not do. Also since we are on the safety issues. I used a hitch mounted shackle reciver for my recoveries. And if I am doing the pulling I try to always pull in the forward direction.
@getachefupya That hand winch is a 12000lbs hoist.rated As for the cable it is using amsteel blue synthetic cable. The handle is also rated...to bend so you know if you are reaching 12000lbs A hoist lifts straight up off the ground. dead lift. pulling on the ground is no problem. It can take some work, but it does work.
This is not a demo in recovery 101 but a description of this particular model handwinch.
Theres a easeir way of getting your car down the road, its called pushing it, why dont you make a video of it when your useing it to pull your car out of say somthing its stuck in, cause i coulda pushed it faster then that winch pulled it in the vid.
@Canadianredneks I hear what you're saying But it was not really meant to show recovery. A discussion came up on a 4x4 forum about this particular model of hand winch. Little info and no videos were available so since I had one, I made a little demo video. Proof of concept if you will. But yeah, a real recoery video would be cooler. Just whenever I have gotten stuck another truck with me simply pulled me out. One day I will make one expressly for that. Thanks for the comments.
@mikesandytoes I made this video because I couldn't find a video of it before I bought it so I made my own and shared it here, and since it was also a topic in a 4x4 forum I thought I would give people a video look at it. It would likely be quite an endeavor if hood deep in mud.
@mikesandytoes This hand winch is really a hoist, made of cast iron, in Ohio, so not cheap imported stuff made of sheet metal. And being really a hoist it can lift 6000 lbs straight up, it also comes with a pulley so it can be doubled to 12000lbs. I have used it with my tires mid way in mud, and to help me climb out of ruts that I couldn't get over cause it was that kind of slippery, oily, greasy type of mud...attached to a tree mind you, not the anchor. I don't do great big mud pits.
Thanks so much for making this video. This is the same exact setup that I plan on getting for my 4runner. Glad to see it will work in mild situations. I have a 2wd so I only drive on relatively flat dirt roads with some soft earth spots, and some sand. So this will be perfect.
@dreamhobbies Thanks for the support. Get it, It works great in harsher conditions too. I just have not been able to get back on the trail and find some mud to get stuck in. I will record that when I can and post that video too.
What is the type of winch this is?

sorry about dumb question. I had just bought my winch. I can't get over how awesome these things are. Best 25 bucks I ever spent!

@mikesandytoes it is a sloooow process but it works.

@captainp33 I don't think you would be able to use that in extreme mud/snow conditions, just doesn't look plausible.
