The early 1970s was a LONG time ago. Don Mclean (like the rest of us) has grown old. We tell our youth, "I wonder if you know that I never understood that although you said you'd go, until you did, I never thought you would."
I wish this video was of Don performing this live in the 70s. I'm sure he performed this live, and his live performances, especially in the early 70s, are even better than his recordings.
Another beautiful song from a master of beautiful songs. I agree that Don's 2nd album, American Pie, is full of gems like this but I think his self titled 3rd album is his best even though it didn't have any top 10 hit song. It had several priceless gems like Oh My What a Shame and Winter Has Me in its Grip. To me they're his best work.
i grew up listening to progressive rock, art rock, and for the past 32 years, the legends of jazz...having said that, one of the best albums i've ever heard for sheer beauty and poetry is Don Mcleans' American Pie. If you've never heard it, treat yourself to this masterpiece....you won't be sorry!!!!!!!!
One of his best, and that's saying something. I've heard that the big hit for Roberta Flack, 'Killing Me Softly with his Song' was inspired by one of his performances. I agree with most of the comments here.
just wonderful.... lyrics to die for.... he was the master and I think Dylan and a few others wanted to be like him, but failed.... DM was one of a kind
his songs are full of poetry put into music.. always a pleasure listening to his songs..takes you somewhere, where thoughts are companions of the imagination..
I feel like Don McLean doesn't get as much recognition as he deserves. People can't get past American Pie (good song still) and hear his other music. He's one of the best song writers out there.
Holy cow! I haven't heard this song in years and it takes me right back to my high school years when American Pie was "our song" when it came out our senior year . This particular song (Till tomorrow), was about a certain girl for me in college.
Still feel it after all these years, so many great songs on that album. Thanks Don and thanks folkman for posting this.
This was such a surprise to find on the American Pie album, along with 'Winterwood', actually the whole album I played near to death. Brilliant, I have 3 cd's of Don, saw him live. Talent, class, star, never get tired of listening to this song, or his recordings.
Brilliantly haunting, and beautiful. It's wonderful how simple; it leaves you to fill in the meaning of the song for yourself. Thank you for posting.~
Pure poetry! One of those songs u could listen 2 all day long especially 4 those frustrating days and all u want was just 2 relax and get lost in a day dream beneath a Maple tree ...how tough do I sound Ha!~Be true 2 who u are and everything will fall in it's rightful place~.
@zaidx24 wow beneath a maple tree....sorry my best friends parents just died and they absolutly loved don mclean and they were burried under a maple tree.
@munster1331 I'm sorry 2 hear about your friends parents,I don't know why I said it... it just felt right at the time and my condolences again I'm sure there in a better place Take Care!!!
The lyrics are so touching and everytime when I listen to this song, I want to cry. Especially, "Where has the love gone and what have we become" It is extremely touching and beautiful!
There should be a special shrine for great music and great songs such as this....and so many more which were born in the heart and spirit of Don McLean.
yes...where has all the love gone? what has become of this world? if only we learn to live peacefully with one another then the rainbow will always be there to paint the sky thus signifying a beautiful world. lovers are meant to be lovers to bring inspiration and joy to this bleak world we live in. don's music is simply superb
I read in one of your comments you had seen Don Mclean many times, Im so jealous if he comes to England again I will be there thats for sure. He really is killing me softly with his songs.
Yes, I live in the Los Angeles area, and have seen him at many of the small and intimate venues in California. If you ever get a chance to see him, you should do whatever you can to grab the opportunity. He carries on with the audience with grace and ease, which makes the music more personal. It is also interesting how time has changed the music just a little, and with age we become wiser, and look at the world through different eyes. The same eyes, but different in a more timeless sense.
I was priveleged to see Don in Melbourne (Australia) in maybe 2003. Awesome. Been a fan since 1977 in my dad's Datsun 260ZX...a eight track thingy. And 'Seals & Crofts' as well. In Australia at the time they were the only two 'tapes' available....well according to our local datsun dealer.
thank you. ive only got a greatest hits but im looking to get american pie and tapestry. Also is there any other albums by him you could reccomend. thanks
The absolute beauty of his music is that as long as we know where to go, in solitude, and listen again with our hearts, we can relive the short moments, and hold their memories with us as long as we wish. The music will be here forever, however, we will not. I was told by a wonderful artist I know that we should listen to music we enjoy like it is the last time we will hear it. It's not easy because we take so much for granted. We really do, and the time we have today is so precious.....
On the American Pie 33 LP this was after Pie and before Vincent, so I used to listen to it because I was too lazy to lift the needle. I liked it. I guess it was sort of the record equivalent of a "time slot TV hit."
