I certainly think it is possible. Start at the hills, dig some swales on contour, plant fruittrees and nitrogen fixing groundcover plants like Lupins, mulch everything heavy and off you go. I used this method in Finland on an dry island consisting only of rocks, sand, some acidic pine trees and european blueberrys. Now the island is full of cherry trees, red, white and blackcurrent and sea buckthorn bushes. Lovely! :-)

@EdM021 Thanks but no, it is my mother's island and she is the landowner. She introduced me to gardening in my childhood. Always made compost and maybe even heard of Bill Mollison but nothing would grow on this island. The solution on sand and rock soil is to burrie some wood half a meter deep while making terraces on contour. I only used muscle power and it took 1 month, to make them, plant the fruittrees and dig the swale. I need some more support species to make it a self sustaining system.

and it grows with salty water,

that is so special about it, it works like a filter!

so it is a way out of the mess of the desert!!!!!

Basically a bunch of water went through the desert, and sand was brought up. Sand is high in salt, and salt is what got them into the mess.

Things will no be succesful in Eritrea as long as Isayas Akeworki regim is on power.
