I enjoy the movie but i ABOSOLUTELY LOVE the play with Melba Moore & Robert Guilaume (from the sitcom "Benson"-sorry about the spelling) I wish someone would upload the play especially the speech that "Purlie" makes when he tells how he "calls out' Col. Cotchupie
I remember watching this movie with my mother when I was a little boy. Did'nt seem so predgudiced then it was kinda normal and victorious. But I never put 2 and 2 together to realize that the captain was Boss Hogg (The Dukes Of Hazzard).
the only bad part about it is they left the music out - the musical on stage was on fire... was it after this film? my history is bad, lol... this film is feeling stifled, maybe I didn't realize the musical was made afterwards- but it would make sense, based on the datedness... clever lyrics and staging bring it to life in an amazing way, no small thanks to Melba Moore and Cleavon Little. Wow- didn't know Alan was that old but he is still funny. Thank You -
I remember the play, but what role did cleavon Little have. "purlie" was played by Robert Guilaume & "gitlow" was played by Sherman Hemsley (George Jefferson)
In the musical (I think it was 1971 but not sure) Cleavon Little was Purie, with Melba Moore, Sherman Helmsley et al. I gew up singing those songs long before i understood them. Love love love I've Got Love :)

The musical was from the '70s, and was based on a play from the '60s. This movie is based on the '60s play.

LMFAO at Alan's accent! I'm a Southerner and I have to say, his accent is just sad, lol. I still love him though!
