Slats. increase chord length of the wing sufrace producing more lift at higher AOA's and thus at slower speeds. They compensate for energy loss at lower speeds when flaps are extended.
Slats are on the leading edge, flaps (drag inducing) are on the trailing edge. Hope it helps!
@wowdude999 These are the flaps, they are raised on takeoffs and landings to slow the plane downwhen landing/provide extra lift when takeoff. They are retracted during the flight.
I guess he took off from Singapore as it's Singapore Airlines... when I went to Melbourne I made a stop in Singapore too but I was with British Airlines and then with Qantas! AMAZING!
aah this is the classic runway 34L approach for flights coming from the west (SE Asia, Melbourne, Perth etc).. fly over to the Tasman sea over a point b/w Wollongong and Nowra..then take a left until aligning on final and cross Botany Bay before touchdown... this seems like SQ221 (the early morning arrival) .this flight's now operated by the A380
At first, i saw how high they were off the ground, i was like this must be 10 minutes, but its only 4 in an half, wow! Never knew planes can decrease in height so fast even a 747! (Im no plane expert)
You don't retract the flaps during reverse thrust! When the reverse thrust is deployed, the middle and inner slats automatically retract without the pilots doing anything. Besides, if the pilot was retracting the flap (which he will never do during landing), the outer slat would be the first to retract because when on flaps 1 only the middle and inner slats are extended. When on flaps 5-30, that's when the outer slat is extended. My point: pilots never retract flaps during landing!
Indeed. I've always enjoyed flying with Singapore Airlines...well as much as is possible in economy. Once flew out of Sydney in a major thunderstorm; lightning, the works. Horrible turbulence on take-off but they got us in the air and home.
SINGAPORE AIRLINES WINS ONCE AGAIN AS "THE AIRLINE OF THE YEAR FOR 2008". "For the 3rd time in 10 years, Singapore Airlines has been named World's Best Airline, winning the 2008 Airline of the Year title in the latest World Airline Awards" said Edward Plaisted (CEO of Skytrax). "We extend our congratulations to them for this notable achievement, coinciding with the time that Singapore Airlines was the world's first airline to fly the Airbus A380."
Why do you mean the flaps are at 25 ? If you mean the retraction of the slats in this video: Slats retract always because of the thrust reverser (possible damage of the wing in case of parts on the runway)
hacki thats one cool landing, welcome to sydney. and you maybe helping people who are afraid to fly with these vids.how long was this flight 6 hours or about.
I was wondering if somebody could answer my question: when should (or at what point?) should the pilot turn on the seat belt signs when he's nearing the destination airport?
wow, a great landing by singapore airlines, I don't think I've experienced a landing this soft, but of coarse, I haven't flown that much, I'm still a beginner.
Very nice video!! It shows the spoilers deploy, the wings flex, the thrust reversers, and a lot of other stuff. Definitely one of the best 747 videos on Youtube. 5 stars!
The inner slats are retracted when the thrust reverse are actuated. You can notice that when the pilot turns off the reverse, the inner slats automatically extend. It's a 747 feature.
that was the softest landing i've ever seen, the camera didn't even shake a bit. The scary thing was that when it landed, it looked like the wing was dropping down and was going to fall off
well i know one thing for sure, cathay pacific has terrible service! on my flight to hong kong last, last summer, i asked the flight attendent for a pack of cards. i wait for like twenty minutes and i don't get them. so i call another flight attendent and ask her for a pack of cards. again, i wait for like twenty minutes but no cards! so i call a third flight attendent!! I got 3 packs of cards that day!
i'm confused, whats the best airline, because everyone says that's it's cathay pacific or singapore airlines or lufthansa or emirates or qantas or british airways, could someone tell me the number 1

It's because dirts and rocks comes out of the engine when in reverse thrust so not to damage the slats.

It's not a standard... Only the 747 do this.
The inner slats are retracted when the thrust reverse are actuated. You can notice that when the pilot turns off the reverse, the inner slats automatically extend. It's a 747 feature.
