This piece was my introduction to Bach, who - like "classical music" - meant nothing to me. Badinerie was used in TV. I wanted to buy the record. "Unfortunately" it was not a single. I got this LP with the 2nd and 3rd suite, which I never expected to like. But the record ended up on the turntable, just to hear Badinerie. As this piece was so short I often played the entire record as "background music". But one day I started to listen, and as a drug Bach entered my soul, never to leave.
I'm playing this piece for a solo and ensemble competition in February and this is so helpful to listen to! Definitely 5 stars! Also, if anyone knows, does this piece repeat entirely at the end? I'm kind of confused.
The ouverture to the suite is exactly like you hear it here: the slover beginning is repeated, with only a slight difference at the end of each repetition. The fast part starting at 2:58 is only played once.
It depends on the recording. One way is to repeat the slow section and then to play the fugal section only once (this is how I intend to do my A-level performance of this) but I've heard recordings (like that of the Japenese Bach Collegium, great period-style performance if you're interested) which repeat both sections. Other recordings also only repeat the first slow section once, however i don't like this as I find it disrupts the balance of the piece with the fugal section being so long.
My all time favourite J.S Bach piece, and this rendition is close to my all time favourite recording of this piece by Munich Bach Orchestra with Karl Richter.
I'm playing this for my orchestra...and I'm concertmaster! :)
