I remember when this first came out my English teacher wrote "Grey day" and "Grade A" on the blackboard and spent an hour debating what the song was about.

Considering the lousy Groups they give awards out too it just shows what the organisers know about music.This group more than anyother was a inspiration for me and many others growing up in the late 70s and early 80s in bleak times.Madness dont need an award from the fing Brits,they have the loyal fans behind them who know how good they are and was back then too.
For such a London-identified band, with singers who sang with heavy Cockney accents, Madness' songs communicated well beyond England. It's not hard, as someone not from the U.K., to grasp the pathos in tracks likes "Grey Day" and "Tomorrow's Just Another Day". Madness' music had some real depth beneath their "nutty" image.
This is definitely one of their better records. Released in spring 1981 when high unemployment was rife and slum riots were just around the corner. The mood of this song fits the era perfectly but the meaning completely passed me by at the time. I was only ten though. The tubular bells are cool.
Enjoy this, not the usual uplifting sing along eastend kness up pearly king and queen jellied ells type of madness tune but good all the same thought thier first album was a modern classic.

Quite ironic really. Sums up what its like living in the UK - wet - depressing - sinking house prices - rip off petrol - kids killing each other. Next time you are in the rush hour just look at the peoples faces and so begins another weary day ;0(

Oh my God! If you Look at the scene where he is under the umbrella, there are a load of kids dancing. I am the one with the big grin on the left in my favourite body-warmer! I can remember when it was filmed. It was in Hornimans park in Notting Hill.
