To elaborate, I also think he is questioning himself as to whether he really can entrust his heart to her, hence the chorus "Behind the door, should I open it for you?" He feels he is by himself and doesn't want to be, so he asks her if she could be there for him when he needs her, or if she is also "unforgiven" and thus suffering the same affliction. Does she need him to use his heart to comfort hers, and wouldn't that be impossible if he needed her the same way? One has to open first. Turmoil.

Sounds more like he thinks that listening to his girls problems makes him forget his own, lay beside me being a literal line. At the end of the day she lays next to him and speaks her problems,and they cause him to forget his own. His heart is the door, and it is unlocked for her as long as she is faithful. He attempts to understand her as much as she does for him. But things are hard, he opens his heart a bit but can't show what he wants, hence no light shining through.

"lay beside me, tell me what they've done" .... prolly means he's asking the girl to stand by him , while his life is falling and asks the girl to understand ... and as for the chorus part .... he's asking the girl to forgive him or sumthin' ... coz he feels guilty and lost....the song has a very deep meaning ... its hard to understand easily ....
