That's because there's a special sensor that detects earthquake-type motion, including jumping, and therefore, shuts down the elevator for a specific timespan, and is used for safety purposes.

We have an Otis in our library that does that. The floor indicator changes immediately upon the start of the motor, but it doesn't beep until it actually reaches the floor.

Yeah there's a few Montgomery Kone elevators I've seen do that, and that (plus the bell tone) made me think they were Schindlers, until I saw the Kone logo on the sensors.

I think those are seismic safety devices, and are required on all new elevators. As a result, they can stop the elevator if it detects jumping motion, since it would be like earthquake motion.

dont jump because it will get stuck if you do it enough I jumped in the schindelr elevator before and got stuck for 10 sec because it will activate the safty thing thinks somthings wrong with it I dont think you want to be stuck. not just schindler all elevators some elevator really shake when you jump

Actually the door close button does work on Schindler elevators, but jumping in any elevator is not a good idea, since it can actually stop the elevator for safety reasons.

I learnd that jumping in an elevator is not a good idea the hard way I jump in the west couthouse elevator and it got stuck it thinks that the elevator might be falling and stops and it was a schindler and was dinging ontinuesly like when the doors were open to long

why did they have to tear it down why didnt a differnt store by the building and just paint the walls and get new floors that was the first dept store built in 1963 that elevator neeeded fixed though but are you sure its not there any more?
