Looks as if the fuel injection system is chucking fuel in - a real problem on early electronic fuel injection systems. They're a death trap in a crash. Modern cars have a sensor that turns off the pump in a crash.

This was a horrible tragedy though - we had something similar here in Tampa - a woman and her daughter in their minivan were hit by some moron who was street racing at 100 mph in a 45 mph zone. Her van caught on fire and she and her daughter were trapped inside and they both burned alive. Happened on Sheldon road she had a son and husband who were devastated.
