  • Man, this song is great for when I'm tired, because it just snaps me right out of it.

  • I love this song, Haydn is so inventive, I love the counterpoint at later parts in the song, using the flute. I just had to rewrite the bass part for a harmony exercise lmao :)

  • it's like a symphonic jack-in-the-box

  • this is such an amazing piece of music. I've been studying Classical music in music class and this is by far my 2nd favourite. Mozart's Don Giovanni is my favourite ATM

  • 0:35 thx for waking me up lol

  • AWESOME

  • I'll never forget ... the first time I listened to this piece, I was cocky. I was thinking, "Surprise? Yeah right, not in Haydn's music" then BAM. I swear I have never been so frightened in my life, almost had a heart attack lol

    Thanks Haydn :)

  • hahaha. There are so many surprises. He plays it so loud... then when you expect him to play it loud again... he doesn't... It is like the comedy music of the classical era. hahaha, I always laugh.

  • OMG THIS SONG IS ON NINTENDOGS!!!!!! LOL!!!!!! IT FREAKS THE CRAP OUTTA THE DOGSS LOL!!!!! :p i love this kinda music!!

  • This would be a great song to wake people up in the morning.

  • this is on my music exam tomorrow :)

  • Damn it, I fell out of my chair at 00:35. Maybe I need to pay closer attention in music class.

  • oh god for some reason i feel sooo calm when i listen to this please reply with some more beautiful works of haydn so i can look them up

  • Keep your speakers turned down on for 0:35. This is phenomenal. My favorite part starts at 1:14. This is what you call real music. Lady Gaga could never get this intelligent with her work.

    (:

  • This is what we are playing in our orchestra.

  • I heard this in 10th grade and nearly fell out of my chair. win.

  • holy shit i was not expecting that bang.

  • reminds me of nintendogs

  • haha have to learn this song inside and out for a music assignment on it =P it's a good piece to do but it's so complex and long! haha =D ah well im sure i'll enjoy it really...

  • good symphony

  • I love this so much that I used it as my Wedding March! Everyone told me that I should only use the traditional Wedding March or Canon in D, but I gave them what for! My flower girl and ring bearer came in at min 3:48 and I came in on min 4:39! Loved it! So the grand entrance every bride dreams of!

  • wooph. I am awake now. That was awesome

  • I can easily visualise some heart-attacks occuring during the first ever performance of this piece!

  • i like ur comment ... ahaha ^-^

One of my favorites of Haydn's stuff.

  • So im sitting in band half sleep cuz i dnt want to play this and i doze off and when the loud note comes i jump out the seat and hit my head and the class ROFLs

  • lol i heard this in my music class and once the loud note came... the whole class (including me xD) jumped from their seats xD

  • the samething happened in my class yesterday

  • Brilliant,we needed a Franz Joseph Haydn today

  • Mrkodster thats hysterical haha.... I just played this for my daughter and thought the same thing when she got scared...she just started playing about 7 months ago and hadn't heard this before...she started with that guide from MasterOfInstruments. com so i'm sure she will be playing this piece very soon.

  • wheres the surprise?

  • Wonderful!

  • I'm sure if Haydn's time had Youtube, everyone would post "REACTION TO HAYDN SURPRISE SYMPHONY 94"

  • SURPRISE!!!!!!

  • XD haha ! LOL

It is sooo funny ! ;D

The 1st time we listened to it, everyone just jumped from their seats, and we were all ready for another one ... XP

i like this music very mutch.

  • Haydn is a great genius!

  • ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫ ♫

    PERFECTION

  • We listened to this in Music App. Haha it was funny. Some kid was sleeping. Our teacher turned it all the way up. He woke up with the best facial expression EVER.

  • oh i love it

  • whooo suprisee me

  • We listened to this in music class, and i was already sleepy. This song is so devious it impresses me. it plays lullabye phrases to put you in peace, then shocks the FUCK out of you.

I give Haydn SERIOUS props for the balls to do this.

  • couldn't have said it better myself lol..... I have a listening exam in music app and this one I will defiantly remember

  • the best part about this, is that during the time this was new people were so subtle and proper that this must have rocked their worlds.

I can imagine some fat bitch at a concert thinking "This is simply wonderful... OH MY WORD!"

  • oops i meant millencolinman not lazurm

  • hahahaha!

  • A bit similar to "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and one of Mozart's pieces, forgot which one.

  • Damn, now I can't stop signing "twinkle, twinkle, little star" in my mind while listening it :D

  • LMAO! ur comment gets 5 stars

  • turn the volume full way IT MAKES IT FUN!!!!!

  • I had only heard the first part, so I never got the surprise part until now. I was surprised. I get it now. Haha...

  • i heard this in my music class today everyone laughed

  • no way? me too. today. weird.

  • I first heard in a concert when I was little child, and I almost screamed right there and then.

    Lovely piece (:

  • I heard this on Nintendogs... scared the crap outta me the first time xD

  • it is surprising indeed

  • it is the best ... :)

  • haha.. that sure was a "surprise" alright.. lol..

  • ahahhahah

    what made me laugh was

i'm playing this song for my eighth grade violin exams, and so i was standing trying to think of ways to make it sound better, so i used the title and tried to imagine it as somebody's birthday surprise, when they're minding their own business and all of a sudden its a happy surprise

but i guess haydn imagined it as you walking down a dark alley and then the grim reaper jumps on you or something...

  • hmm.... I guess THAT is why they call it the surprise symphony.

  • my volume was up too high.... it almost scared me out of my chair. Lovely piece though

  • I couldnt really hear it That good so i put the volume up but them BOOM!!! roflmao!! :))

  • lol that happend to me too

  • Surprise!!!

  • what's the story behind this again?

  • it's wit expressed in music through "sarcasm" ;-)

  • This is what happens when you write that many symphonies...

  • xDD

I love this....in a paranoid, creepy way. Brilliance!

The first time I heard this I nearly jumped out of my skin XD

    Thanks for sharing! º3º

  • Sasuke君 !!! ... :D

  • I took a facebook quiz "What musical masterpiece are you most like?" The "Surprise Symphony" was the outcome. So I logged on to youtube to listen to it and it scared the hell outta me!

  • exactly the same hahaha

i have to say i like it, though!

  • LMAO i was reading all the comments on people having heart attacks and then... total karma right there! xD this is seriously smart and hilarious stuff! go Haydn!

  • the 'surprise' part startles me every single time I listen to this! the first time I heard it at school, i seriously jumped... haydn's musical joke was perfect, man

  • Wow, this song is hard when it gets fast. I have to preform this song for an exam :P

  • Omg. Actually scared me and jumped up on the first surprise. =.=. I was wondering why it was called surprise as i was reading "what to listen for" on my textbook.

  • OMG! Are you studying music history too? I was just at the Haydn section.

This piece scared the crap out of me even when I'm expecting it. lol

  • shit it was so low and then booom i jumped off my chair O.o

i got scared. i guess i know why its called surprise now lol

    i like it though :)

  • One of the few humorous musicians that the world has ever had~ lol Just love it~ ^^

  • indeed !!! :-)

  • This song is actually On Nintendogs

  • lol

  • Lol, that's interesting.

  • it's rather interesting!! he was very observant...

  • i was Facebooking and forgot what i was listening to then had a "heart attack" at the surprise! Darn u Hayden!

  • Haydn was such a genius. This is an amazing piece of music.

  • gee you guys haven't heard this before have you ?

  • gee, you're a pompous douche, aren't you?

  • I love Joseph Haydn, he is one of my favorite classic composer, so talented and with such a great sense of humour!

do do mi mi sol sol mi

fa fa re re si si sol

  • our music teacher led us listen to it and he turned it very lound eveyone jumped out of the seat and i love this symphony and i found it on youtube

  • LMFAO HAYDN WAS A GENIOUS!!!!!! lol our band is playing this in our choir. we really scared my grandma. she literaly fell on the floor

  • what does "lmfao" means?? poor grandma...:P

  • Laughing My F***ing A** Off

  • laugh my fucking ass off.

  • Haha, it's shit like this that really made Haydn a genius of his day, an entire piece of it completely dedicated to lulling you into a false sense of security, then letting loose.

  • Is that not genius? I suggest you look into the story behind this song.

  • well...I think the people kinda...fell asleep when thy were listening to music and hayden...well he solved the problem....ROTFL!! such a genius!

  • holy smoke! i nearly yelped

  • LOL! I love it! That first "FFF" chord must've scared the pants off of anyone seeing this for the first time. :) Timeless humor... :D

  • ...how is it scary????

  • i think what they refer here as "scary" is the surprise ....ahahaha :D

  • listen to the first eight measures. It gets really quiet. When people used to listen to classical music, it would be in a large, dark theatre. Because of this, they would be luled into an almost dream like state from the happy, quiet music. And then all of a sudden a large chord hits them. "BOOM!"

  • no its cuz the prince was falling alsleep through his work, so if pplz saw tht, they will think the wrong way thts why he did this piece

  • yeah

i'm in the first grade of musical formation,

and in the class that we heard that,

we got a scared of death!!!!

    lol

  • Papa Hyden is what they called him, and his humor wuz very much noticable, especially in this symphony as you can see..... he was tired of the audience falling asleep....awesome way to wake up dont you think??

  • Seconed movment from surprise symphony by Hyden

  • lmao i got a <3 attack!

  • SURPRISE!

  • best classical music song EVER!!!!!1!!one!!!elephant!!!

  • he made it goo so loud all of a sudden because he was tired of people falling asleep suring his preformences so he decided to surprise them into waking up lol ( music class we played this)

  • the user obviously made it very quiet at the beginning.. and then BOOM xD

  • Hahaha, Haydn must have been a funny man.

  • that was really a surprise...i listen this symphony with my volume at maximum and after a few second BUM the drum entered :)) i almost had a heart attack

  • Same, OMG. Good to know I wasn't the only one XD

  • jeez its the scariest thing ever ... :P

  • Song did it's job.

  • me too. the beginning is so low, I turn up volume maximum, and Surprise lol

  • were playing this at my school. all the 6,7, and 8 grade band and ochestras!!!!!! =) And i'm in it! i play the TRUMPET!!!

  • why is this in G major when im hearing B major?

  • this is a Period-Instruments Orchestra. They play in the Standard Pitch of the Period either in A=415 Hz or A=430 Hz ...a half tone down the modern pitch.

  • wait.. if it's a half tone down wouldnt that make it Gb?

  • exactly ... :-)

  • then why is it in B... lol sry this is really confusing

  • it's really confusing ...i know...ahaha....

concert pitch wasn't standard in Europe in the Baroque, Classical and Early Romantic Periods... it wasn't standardized until around mid 1800's.

Beethoven had an argument with the violin virtuoso Bridgetower because of pitch / intonation... :-D

  • The Sym is Gmajor(1st Mov 3rd, 4th Movemetns) but, 2nd Mov which is heard here is in C Major(Dominant Key Relationship). Thus, it is clear that you hear in B major^_^

  • because this movement, 2nd, is in C major, 5 lower than G major, therefore it can be heard like B major because of lower pitched periodic instruments.

  • coz thats only the second movement.

im pretty sure the first movement is in g major

  • because this movement is in C major

  • usually people would sleep towards the adagio part of a symphony so as a solution herr haydn wrote this lovely piece. music historians praise haydn for his ability to let his easy going personality and humor be seen in his music... i didnt really get that at first then when i heard this song i can almost picture haydn laughing as he writes it. amazing

  • funniest prank ever. i show this to my friends and they blast it cuz they expect noise then it goes BOOOM! great timez

  • i can play diz song on ma flute

  • Foarte frumos

  • we listend to this on a music lession

when the surprise came all the girls flew almost 1 meter upp in the air! :)

  • lol so funny, my video stopped buffering for about 10 mins, and i was reading this scary story online, forgot about this. then all of a sudden it comes back on and i fall outta my chair.

  • Hence the "Surprise Symphony" Lol

  • I'm sorry but after reading this I busted out laughing. That is so funny just the thought let alone getting that image. Would scare me too. ;)

  • But as I do not know if my cometary they will be approved, no longer seguirñe making it, what good that nothing prevents me to listen to the times that simple but very significant and instructive work wants this.

thats what the guy below me said translated-loosely- to english

  • thx 4 the translation

  • Pero como no sé si mis cometarios se aprobarán, ya no seguirñe haciéndolo, qué bueno que nada me impide escuchar las veces que quiera esta sencilla pero muy significativa y aleccionadora obra.

  • The Andante piece is just a slow piece, nothing said about volume or "Surprises" :p

  • lol im glad i found it! im playing this in my mixed orchestra and it really helps me to understand my part! thanks! p.s. im a flute

  • im a piano

  • wonderful piece. im going to be playing this with my school orchestra.

  • Was delighted to find this, thanks.

I have fond memories of first hearing this piece as a young child in school and learning the significance of "surprise"!

  • haha!

  • i swear this is on a game, and it made me jump

  • You know... I wrote on my dissertation while listening. I STARTLED! Tell me... who else can make someone startle when they have been dead for so long? Awesome.

  • the fisrt one scared me 4 a second

  • He made this for people to get a fright when they fell asleep during his concert. I love it.

  • lol I think so too :D

  • This is a wonderful piece.

  • The first movement of the "Philosopher" Symphony was far more controversial. Indeed Haydn was made to rewrite it.

Only 800 views on You Tube though. Gosh the devotion to Haydn on here is spectacular.

  • I can just imagine all the arisocrats sitting in their fancy chairs listening to this, nodding their heads appreciatively at the elegance, and then Boom! Then probably all the younger ones went, Haydn is the man!

  • what a nice musicality it is..

my prof in french says this to us..

so i listen and proofing it that he was right by saying to as that it was a kind of sarcasms..

that was great and i like it very much!!

  • me encanta esta cancion!!

  • Eek!!! It's so totally amazing. La di dah la di dah BAM!!! It's great.

  • lol it made me jump

  • me too.

    my music teacher played this,

    and scared us all.

  • Same here... and I was thinking "where was there something to get scared?"... -.-

    But really... that's just me.

  • Can't you just see an elegantly attired late 18th century crowd cuddled cozily into their seats after the opening movement and then knocked to the winds by Haydn's chord there! Love how he keeps playing with the loud/soft aspect leaving the audience to never quite know where or when there might be another big or soft moment alike. Haydn was such a great reader of people - - such a humble genuis!

  • i very much agree ... :>

  • I can play this piece it's such a Suprising piece as in the title.

  • Haydn's such a joker...

  • it was so scary !!!

  • TY TY TY TY TY!

  • Great! Love it, i can play it on piano

  • I just did the same thing..

  • i had to play this in band and i loved it..............but to my the clarenit part was hard cuzz i kept on squcking

  • lol....I listened to this...and I was reading something else and then suddenly MINOR. scared me xDD history behind this is very funny....
