I remember these engines as a kid. The exhaust coming out of these engines were strong because it shot it out the prop. When we were water skiing we called them "TALL STINKEN NIGGERS"!
the old tower of power. also known as a " tall nigger" what a great motor. who new merc would bring this back in 03 with a supercharger and pump 350 out of them..... gotta love it
All I can do now is just watch my video now! I have this motor pulled down. Painting it and putting new decals on it.
Getting rid of the old cable pulley steering and fitting teleflex type. Tired of pumping the fuel bulb so fitting facet electric pump.
The timing belt snapped on my last outing! It's second time water police have had to tow me :( time before that was the gearbox failure due to oil going bad. My fuilt!
nice to see these videos..i have a 1959 super marathon six in complete factory condition, safety wires and lead seals still in place on the cases and heads rated 70hp @ 5000 rpm..factory 24 degree 2 blade bronze prop..currently on my 18' orlando clipper cuddy cabin top speed is 48 knots on calm waters..i sure would like to find another engine cuz 70hp aint enuf to get heavy cargo and passengers on plane without going downwind..lol any lead on another e-mail me ferrelx@hotmail.com
I wouldn't mind trying out one of those stainless 3 blade props. It appears my speedo is way out my mobiles GPS says I am doing 10km/h faster than the speedo says..
I got a Mk 78A inline six dock eater on a G3 Glastron that runs like a bat outta hell. It has a 2 blade bronze prop. I tried a 3 blade prop on it but the 2 blade was faster for sure. I'm thinking about getting one of these 150 hp tower of power machines. I love older mercs. nothing sounds like 'em and nothing runs like 'em!
Great to see a tower of power. My mate had one years ago. Great thatr they are still noisy as all hell. My mate had a 135 HP L6, I had a 140 V4 cross flow OMC. His young fellows comment, "Dad can we get an Evinrude "cause there quieter". Smooth running he was 2 MPH faster at 45 MPH. Rough water the OMC ran 50. Great motors but painful to work on.

@merctech417 The only problem is is that the verado's are too quiet. They should make optimax's inline six.

Apparently they have have less torque than other current 150hp motors..
jason35177 8 months ago
@jason35177 probably because theyre only a 1.6 litre motor (100 cubic inch) whilst current ones are much bigger

are these as powerful as todays 150 hp ?
