You don't lose a whole lot of FPS as long as you stay above 10". The same 75 gr BTHP bullet that I get 2750 fps on my 16" barrel. I get 2300 FPS outta my 11.5". I only get 2050 fps outta my 7.5" barrel. Anything less that 10" I would stay away from.
sorry but i need to clarify the question. "is it worth have a sbr." i am building a defensive rifle but i want it to have a board scale of capabilities. i have never held an sbr so i wanted some of the pros and cons of that type of system. i have been doing research and some people either love or hate them. i just don't want to drop $800 (after the $200 tax stamp) on a sbr barrel if it will lack the performance that i
am looking for, ultimately making me regret my decision. i have a 16 inch ar its ok but if i can get a shorter barrel that easier to handle. with the close to the same lethality that would be a viable upgrade.
@GunWebsites maybe putting a 14" block of ballistics gel out there with a paper target on it.. i don't know how to make it but that would be proof enough for me
And as for real world effectiveness, Marines have been making 600-800 yard shots in iraq and afghanistan.. but who's going to be defending themselves that distance? honestly, these are great guns, its going to be 50 yards or less as a home protection gun (probably less than 5), the hitting a target at 500, just a really cool bonus
Velocity is extremely hindered with that short of a barrel. If I was using a shorty barrel, I'd stick to heavier bullets, 75gr TAP, 77gr, etc. With all that velocity diminished, the bullet no longer has the capability to fragment inside bad guys. I mean a 10.5" AR is a handy little weapon, but if your business is putting people down, I'd stick with 14.5" and above.
Is M855 good out to 300 meters?

I can't even do that stading with an acog at 500 yards, how big is that target, I was trying to shoot water gallons with 55 grain american eagle ammo

yeah I agree, you lose lotsa distance taking half a foot of of that barrel. its great for CQB but at longer distances, its not so great.

I think if you can go SBR, then get an SBR
The 10" rifles are very maneuverable with little loss of performance IMO

whats the stopping power of a 10 inch at that range
jamesp6282 2 years ago
we are working on a way to test that, since we all wonder the same thing

thanks can you make a vid when you do. i wanted to make a gas piston with a noveske barrel. i wanted to know if it was worth having a sbr.

Not very good.

do you have any resources on this? We have looked for some good way to test the effectiveness at distance
