You're so right. I'm constantly telling people that EVERY interaction with a dog is a TRAINING interaction. No matter what we're doing, we are telling our dogs how to or not to interact with us - what will and will not work to get their needs/desires met. Best we always tell them what works as this massively minimizes their "misbehavior" for trying what won't work....
If you can''t train a dog, either don't get a dog at all, or get a professional trainer! I hear so many stories of lazy people letting their dogs do what they want. Dogs are just like children. They need to be taught to behave appropriately.
Dog trainers like this cannot walk away from idiots, so I have no sympathy at all for them. It is none of their business, and nothing they do will ever change this.
People like this drive me nuts! I hate hearing people say "OMG! My dog/cat/horse/whatever would have beautiful/cute/sweet/etc. babies!" even though the animal can barely walk on its own legs because its paws/hooves/whatever are at weird angles. Or you get the people who think the animal needs to "experience the joys of parenthood". I get on people's cases about free feeding and fat animals. My husband said he wanted a fat cat because that's how it should be. I'm proud to say that we don't.
This is why I hate dog owners. I hate fucking dogs. Look I don't want your fucking dog all over me. Take it to the trainer so I don't have to deal with your fucking dog and keep it on the leash.
@GoodDogJE I thought it was hysterical. It's why I hate dog owners, but you could have easily done this with people and their kids. My actual problem is irresponsible people.
@fifimsp true. this could be directed at people with their kids. but since i'm not yet a parent, i figure i should wait till I have some of my own before i spout about them. ;-) glad you enjoyed it.
@GoodDogJE I'm not a parent either, but I am a teacher to behavior disorder children. LOL. One of my good friends is a dog trainer so I thought this was funny. I've learned people think they don't need help from anybody but that's not the reality. I think people think dog trainers are menial labor. She had to train under a trainer for a long time before she could open her business. I also don't like dog owners/parents/ect. who think that I need to love what they do. Keep your dog off of me.
@fifimsp I'm frequently telling clients that what I'm advising for their dog will work great for their kids as well (& spouses, too). I can totally see a connection. I think people believe training/behavior modification is menial because there aren't really any standardized regulations as yet. Anyone can call themselves a trainer even with no skill. I've got education and skill, so I feel for/with your friend. But I get why some people are wary. Thank you for being a teacher. We need more.
lol guess id be one of the idiots, but im still not going to a trainer unless my dog became aggressive but for miner things like tricks i dont bother with but the important stuff like stay, sit for sure Freckle also knows not to jump up on people unless called up we only allow this with my fiance and myself, i dont want freckle knocking people over, we put food down twice a day and her weight is great our vet said so just had her spayed and both male cats neutered

Ugh. Some people shouldn't be able to own animals.
In 3 years training at Petsmart and 6 months at Petco, I have overheard or engaged in every one of these conversation points multiple times. Except the lemon pledge. :) believe me, "you DumbF*ck" has been on the tip of my tongue countless times.
LOL...I was in the process of making the exact same video. As a professional trainer it is astonishing the things that come out of some owner's mouths. I especially love when they tell me how unruly their dog is, and simultaneously how it is "a really good dog".
Just remember, female mamals(including dogs) go through menstral cycles. My dog is fixed and im so glad i dont have to follow behind her, cleaning up blood! Getting her fixed was the best thing we could have done, for numerous reasons.
@dunringillgsd I don't know where you got this information but it is not remotely true. there is nothing negative to spaying or neutering at any age. Knee problems on a neutered dog is utterly ridiculous. Besides who would want an un neutered dog around. or a dog in heat bleeding in the house. It's just a given in responsible pet ownership to sterilized for health and pet over population reasons as well as formal obedience school. smkennelgirl
@smkennelgirl Boy some of you people have really drunk the kool-aid. You are absolutely wrong, there ARE downsides to spaying and neutering, and especially EARLY spay and neuter. Being a responsible dog owner is not contingent upon having your dog sterilized. Read up, be open minded, don't automatically believe all the bull-poop you're being fed.
There are plenty of web sites that present other sides to the argument. Just do a search on "effects of spay and neuter."
I've bred 22 pups. Grandma was intact when she passed at 15.5, fully sighted and hearing. Her daughter is 10, son is 12, grandaughter 6. I don't think not spaying or neutering hurt them. If all dogs are neutered, where will our next dogs come from?
My puppies are very cute. Their parents are some of the top ranked obedience dogs in the country as well as VCD dogs...I feel like this instructor
@mudepoz328 That's very narrow minded. There are millions and millions of unwanted dogs. You should feel like a bad person. Please stop adding to the overpopulation problem. If everyone spayed or neutered their pet, in maybe 10 or 20 years the supply would actually meet the demand. Until then, every puppy born is a shelter-animals death sentence. And the cycle continues as the odds of that puppy ending up in a shelter increase with every other new puppy. What a sad cycle. Shameful.
@agility4me444 eliminating the potential for testicular (male), ovarian & uterine (female) cancer and seriously reducing the chances of prostate (prostate) and mammary (female) cancers as well as other types of hormone driven cancers by definition makes the dog healthier. It does not necessarily improve their day-to-day immune system, but it can extend an individual's life by up to 40% (might have died at 7 or 8 due to cancer, but w/o developing cancer can live to be 12 or 13).
@GoodDogJE Well, spaying and neutering also brings a higher chance of other terminal illnesses (a higher chance than any cancer that could be "prevented" with spaying and neutering). I just think it's useful for people that this video is making fun of that can't control their dogs. @GoodDogJE For one most dogs that are neutered(BTW neutered is the general term for male or female having reproductive parts removed) get thyroid problems causing obesity, incontanence, and a few other things that I can't remember at this time. I am a vet tech and I have read these things in the AVMA magazine we would get at the clinic. Why "fix" some thing that isn't broken. It is up to people to be responcible dog owners and get educated.
@HausUlv Thx 4 sharing your opinion. I'm aware of anecdotal accounts of "fixed" dogs developing some health issues. Clearly each owner needs to be responsible & do what seems best for that particular animal.
This was never meant to be a neuter/don't debate. It's just a fun jab at the clueless dog owners for those of us in the industry to enjoy.
@HausUlv No worries. I don't know if you read some of the other comments, but for a while there it was getting really hairy about neuter, don't neuter.... and sort of started to devolve into this whole big thing that it was never meant to be. I thought you might be headed down that same road. Sorry if my "ugh... here we go again..." slapped you across your computer screen. ;-)
@agility4me444 You're correct, fixing dogs does not automatically make them healthier. Neutered dogs are actually MORE prone to prostate cancer, and the prostate cancer they get is not generally treatable. Dogs neutered young are more prone to cruciate problems, low thyroid, incontinence, and are often more severely affected with canine cognitive disorder when they are older. it's good to ask questions!
For everyone commenting about the breeding portion of this video: The point being made is not that some dogs will be uncontrollable or disobedient. It is that too many people breed without any regard to what happens to those puppies once they arrive. In the US, between 3-4 million dogs & cats are euthanized due to lack of space or adopting homes. That is 5-7 animals euthanized every minute of every day. It is the responsible thing for the pet population to spay & neuter.
Clarification: 3-4 million dogs & cats euthanized every year, which works out to be roughly 5-7 animals every minute of every day of every year - just in the US.
Further, fixing your pet eliminates the potential for reproductive organ cancer & reduces the chances of many other types of cancers. It lowers the potential for fights, for males to escape and possibly get lost or hit by a car while looking for females.
For more info see: Crunching the Numbers blog at PetsIcon.com
No I am not a breeder at all I have no plan on ever breeding, but if I did I would have shown my dogs to a championship I already have Obedience and Agility titles and I will have health tests done. My one dog comes from the best lines of his breed but like I said no plans to ever breed. I can control my dog and he does not need to be fixed not everyone is a moron like you say in your video. You really should respect some people before you get upset.
@dezinemagic1 all dogs need to be sterilized for health reasons and accidental mating. Who wants an un neutered dog in the house and a female bleeding every 6 months anyway. It's just a given for responsible pet ownership. smkennelgirl
@smkennelgirl Problem here is not all the health reasons you believe are actually true. I have been involved with dogs for 47 years and never had an accidental breeding. As for females bleeding yes it can be a problem so I don't have female dogs. I know that in the US last year 4 million dogs and cats where euthanized, I know that it is a serious problem but I am not a part of that problem and I am sure others are not as well. Please let good dogs owners have a choice.
@dezinemagic1 - No offense but it's really easy to avoid an accidental breeding if you only have one gender in the house. If you had both genders and they were not fixed I wonder if your track record would be the same.
@leonardletoto Yes Leonardletoto I only have males in my house but I do have friends that have females and I do visit. This past summer my dog performed in front of crowds up to 16000 people and 2 of the other dogs in the show where fully in season, and all dogs where off leash. Again no dogs where bred, it can be controlled.
@dezinemagic1 - Just curious...what kind of "show" allows bitches in heat to be off-leash around other off-leash intact males? I'm sure you can control your dogs under ideal conditions but there are bound to be circumstances beyond your control, no matter how many precautions you take and how good you think you are. No disrespect to you, just asking...
@leonardletoto Sorry I don't think I should say as I want to continue with this show in the future. It is not a normal thing but it did happen this past year.
Most of this video is so right. I just don't spay and neuter and I also free feed but I know most people and dogs can't do these things, so I know where you are coming from.
LOL. Too funny!! I love it!! This is the conversation I wish I could have with some people. I would like to beat so many people upside the heads, too, about the breeding thing!! "Because the puppies will be cute". UGH!! I hear it ALL THE TIME!!
oh, My, GOD!!! I laughed until I (almost) puked!!! Sooo True, and so many of us trainers wish we coild be sooo brutally honest!!! Luckily I don't get too many clients like this, but enough. And the Pledge comment!!! LOL!!!
As a Professional dog trainer I see this time and time again. It is an accurate description of how ignorant people can be that own dogs.
I do not necessarily agree with spaying or neutering dogs. It is a fact that their are more risks than rewards with this procedure during and after the fact. I believe that if a dog has a genetic defect, is should be spayed or neutered to reduce the risk of carrying this defect on in the blood line and ignorant people need to stay away from breeding completely
Hilarious! My one beef is that I know plenty of well-trained intact dogs (some oe whome are owned by non-pros), not to mention that long-term research has found a LOT of health risks associated with sterilization (more risks than benefits in some cases)...but I completely understand where this is coming from! :)
Lemon Pledge! I about pissed myself. This is SO freakin' hysterical. I actually KNOW dog trainers like this. But his puppies will be cute. That is just plain crazy. Who ever wrote this text is a genius.
@reiki2guy Thanks, very much. I'm glad you found the humor in this. Although not a single conversation with one person, I have had every part of this conversation at one time or another. Lemon Pledge is a bit of poetic license on my part, but I constantly hear equally poor choices for cleaning up.
