I do not think her whistle nor her belting hes destroyed her voice..i think it was that breathy falsetto. I often tried it, and it really affects the voice, see how painful it is for her when shes reaching those notes in this song. My vocal coach told me that this isn't good when you sing all the time in this breathy falsetto. i mean there are 2 different types of falsetto - this here and the Falsetto in Vision of Love (that sweet(f5) desteny). the second one is much healthier.

What a drastic change from 1995 to 1997, I can see she is struggling here to reach many of the high notes as compared to the daydream world tour, which she reached flawlessly. This was when she start to use the trademark whisper tone which eventually damaged her voice...

MCs voice lowered because of excessive over use of the upper chest voice.

Mariah always makes it obvious when her performance is 100% live. Her facial expressions/movements are so much more believable that when she's lipping.
What I love about Mariah is that she was able to hit the same notes of the album in the live version. Singin half of the song in such a low register is very complicated and technical. Beyonce on the other hand, she emulated this low, whispery singing technique and style on some of her albums ( "Speechless", "Yes" and Be with you) which she's capable of singing live but not in the register she's using on the album. She uses her regular register instead.

@09109159262 mariah doesn't have enough powerful voice than whitney or regine. regine uses her full natural voice when singing. mariah can swiftly change the tone from soprano bottom to alto bottom. she once said in an interview, "i'm more of an alto." which is fact. she has nodules since she was a kid, her mother said. that's why she can belt higher notes. she can whistle almost 3 octaves effortlessly having the ability to change its tone. There are coloratura parts for all voice types in different musical genres. The word actually means "coloring".

Either way, you are wrong. She is an alto. Mezzo-sopranos can't sing B2 and below.

Altos CAN NOT belt and sustain above a C5, they can touch on D5s and E5s, but F5 and G5? Hell no. A true alto would be someone like Toni Braxton or Alicia Keys. MCs voice lowered because of excessive over use of the upper chest voice.

@rekupp Her speaking voice regularly touches B2. That's true...she does loose a neutral larynx at the bottom of her voice. As she has aged, her vocal weight has shifted. She can sing Bb2-F3 with so much more ease now than she could back in the day. Overusing your chest voice has nothing to do with your voice getting richer and lower.
Mariah Carey is an alto. If she was a soprano, not only would her speaking voice be higher, but she ought to be able to belt above A5.

Furthermore, the easiest register to which she has shown much more ease of access and transition through is head voice, not the lower register.

@rekupp Yes but Mariah is no mezzo-soprano. If she was, she'd be more comfortable belting E5, F5 and G5...she wouldn't have those days where she'd couldn't pull it off. It's easier for anyone to use their head voice instead of their chest voice.
Keeping a neutral larynx is not an easy feat...most people (yes, even singers) can't do that.
What is alto bottom? B2?

@BlackLightning20101 Yes, she is scratchy above E5 at times, but those were during times of extreme vocal unrest. Her voice when not stressed can extend up and beyond to A5 - a feat she has done numerous times. Head voice is not easier to access...by no means. It takes more control as the vocal chords are vibrating at a higher frequency.

@crazy2hazy Yes but you make it sound like they lip synch all the time. All singers lipsynch at certain points in their career to preserve their voice because singing all of the time can put strain on your voice and can give you vocal nodules.

Mariah always makes it obvious when her performance is 100% live. Her facial expressions/movements are so much more believable that when she's lipping.

What I love about Mariah is that she was able to hit the same notes of the album in the live version. Singin half of the song in such a low register is very complicated and technical. Beyonce on the other hand, she emulated this low, whispery singing technique and style on some of her albums ( "Speechless", "Yes" and Be with you) which she's capable of singing live but not in the register she's using on the album. She uses her regular register instead.
