As a student in my pre-University days I used to tease my *teachers* in similar ways (especially when provoked), and it was generally greeted in one of three ways: (i) obliviousness (ii) consternation and/or admonishment (iii) sense of humor and appreciation. I think the two students at the end chose the third approach and learned something they will never forget because of the how it was taught. Bravo!
Paying customers for a product based on examinable material had every right to expect the examinable material to be covered. Not to just get to listen to what you thought was an important life lesson. It may well have been the more educational and better in every sense. But I suspect you where not prepared to teach what they had payed for and relished voicing your unique insights. Forgive me but this is unreasonable, you must find your own willing audience. And eventually have ;o)
Your students clearly don't appreciate a good lecturer. Make them sit through two terms of molecular genetics or a year of critical reflection lectures and then see how they feel! =)
Haha, you genius Dan, I hope your class didn't slam you TOO hard in your reviews :P
