@MattBNSF1991 No such thing as a "empty" hazmat car. The proper term would be "residue" which still require one spacer car in most classes. If the car was cleaned (purged) I believe the placards would have been flipped or removed so I'm not sure why this train didn't have a buffer.

Was surprised they did not have a spacer car between the engines and the fuel load. Love those old SD40-2's.
