You guys realize that this song has nothing to do with mexico right? That saying "I was bound for mexico" is a metaphor saying he's giving up and running away from being tied to the girl. It's actually used in a few different songs (like Incubus "Mexico") ", it's not literal, I'm pretty sure.

Benito Juarez was elected President and is know as Mexico's Liberator.This war surged right after The Mexican American War. Viva Mexico! Viva Juarez! and what not.
