I have a gsd and I used clicker training to teach her to listen. It's incredibly effective while walking too. Carry a bag of treats with you and when your dog is near you and not ahead or pulling click the clicker and immediately reward with a treat. You will need a lot of treats in the beginning, then try to space them out. It takes a lot of time and patience. They are incredibly attentive to their surroundings so getting them to focus on you takes some bribery!
god my gs puppy (5months) will NOT pay attention to me! at home she does ok, sit, laydown and shake...but on a walk...no way, she ignores me complely and if there is another person, or another dog ANYwhere around she goes NUTS almost strangling herself on the leash to get to them.

thats a great job on such a young dog. The tricks were easy to teach but he was paying attention to you the whole time. thats not easy to accomplish especially with a puppy.
