Van Halen was always a case of missed opportunities. Admittedly, the band was playing their tightest under Hagar. He demanded a lot more discipline and professionalism from them, than Roth did. And I like their stuff from 5150&F.U.C.K. But Sammy just couldnt get the groove down with these VH Roth-era classics. I know hes trying to put his own signature on them and not just copy Dave. But unfortunately, with the VH sound, it's all or nothing. Pity Roth cudnt have been co-touring w/them@this time.

@SouthOCmixdown You can't be serious. Hagar was never in a position to "demand" anything. He was a late addition to fill a vacant spot in a great band. Eddie and Alex have always been the only elements of relevance in Van Halen.

With the exception of his own band (and only because of it) Hagar has been an also-ran his entire career. Frankly, his success is a total mystery to me.

@howkdmnmfhg Its well known the 85+Van Hagars were more demanding of themselves in rehearsal/performance, compared 2the 84- Roth/VH edition. Hagar still plays w/2of the tightest bands in his Cabo house band &Chickenfoot. Dont misunderstand me~ Im not a Hagar fan(over Roth in VH anyways). "Fall In Love again", "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy", "On Fire", just 2name a few, were pretty decent songs man. Ill always love Roth. But the contrast of both VH bands' performance, is pretty plain 2see here.

@howkdmnmfhg u got bad information, dude. i saw VH in 78. and i can tell u, they kicked serious ASS. they were sharp, strong and seemingly sober. after 83, the guys were too coked and boozed up, to be dependable onstage anymore. on the last tour, roth was laughing and butchering the songs, after a year 'rehearsing'. sammy wud have blown dave off the stage with that same setlist, had he been there. dave was slicker, cooler, and sexier in his day. but sammy is more of a professional. end of story.

In Daves prime, there were plenty of things showmanship/melody-wise that Hagar cudnt do. But by 85-89 unfortunately, there were even more things technically that Hagar cud do that Dave just cudnt do. Like I said, its a shame. Now Dave is trying to get it back &he still cant get it right. Tells u that maybe he only really had 'it' for a small window of time in the 1st place.
