I took a DNA test and found out that my mother's side of the family hails from the Tikari people in Cameroon. My dream is to one day visit and connect.
WOW! Same here! I found on my mother's side that I have Tikar, Hausa and Fulani ancestry to Cameroon. On my father's side to the Akan people in Ghana.
@germanyinthehouse That's true. Mainstream historians will continue to deny the West African connection to Nubia, Egypt, Kush, & Phut but the fact is we migrated to the West because of the numerous foreign invasion plaguing our people in the East so we moved westward as well as some to the Americas before Columbus.
@germanyinthehouse You know, I am Nso on both of my parent's sides. It was very beautiful to know that we come from Nilitic heritage; which my mother actually knew.
@vmwye you know, most of the people in the diaspora who are Tikari trace it on the matrilineal sign. that's because when slaves were recruited from this ethnic group, most of the men killed themselves for pride reasons. the women were the ones who survived the journey. i'm so proud to say i came from a strong black woman.
Music plays an important role in the everyday life of the Tikar people. Wheter it is for a wedding celebration or a funeral, music is often played in group and accompanied by various hand sculpted wooden masks which are painted with natural pigments.
Those masks symbolize the ancestors' spirits. Their presence in ritual ceremonies has a spiritual meaning: new chief intronization, notable or prince's birth etc.
I can not be certain as to why they are dancing but the beat is very similar to that used in Santeria, and Candomble. It's related to the religion of Ifa. if you've heard those drums, you recognize it anywhere.
I just found out this is where my African lineage is. Sooo amazing to know that

I like the film. I want to know why they are dancing? Is it for enjoyment or for another purpose.
