First of all, the iPod was created when there were barely any portable players, and it was aimed to fill that gap.

Secondly, the Zune is a clear attempt from MS to infiltrate in the iPod market. It might be a fair product, I never used it, but it's still not original.

Last but not least, the iPod touch does more than just playing videos in widescreen and HD. It also has apps. It's based on a smart phone, so it does what the iPhone does (except for calls).

Zune also has better sound quality (while not the best, other brands beat both the iPod and a Zune). The ipod does have many more apps though, I agree with you there, but don't bash the zune without using it.
