Sounds like Brahms in intent and sonarity, though not, of course, idiom. It is so surprising that this piece by Gould, largely consdidered a failure as a composer, came out with this beautiful, entrancing and rather enigmatic statment so early on in his career.
Awesome. I was just thinking of posting this (audio with still shot, though), and then I thought....I ain't seen it, but maybe someone else has posted it. So cool.

Terrible piece...such a shockingly ham-handed response to a tradition Gould was supposed to be committed to. What year is it...and it wrestles with the detritus of the 1920's.
i don't even know how you'd distinguish a 'student work' from a non student work...i guess you could tell for yourself if you really like a piece, but that is a very personal matter.
I've been walking around with this piece on mp3 for the past 2yrs... SUBLIME!
Looked around for it, couldn't find it ANYWHERE!! Thank you for the video.
I saw the movie once, was lucky enough to convert this to mp3, then lost my HDD
with the movie on it.
As for half-wits who have the nerve to plebeianly thumb-down a commenter(6x) who is big enough to recognise talent and honest enough to convey (s)he doesn't favour this music, shame on you. Nosce te ipsum
you can here some kind of struggle against something and its getting more worse, but this music i like it so much, pity that glenn gould compose not more
This is tremendous music. If you want to hear a piece in the same genre that was an obvious influence on it I recommend the greatest of Max Reger's string quartets, his Op. 74 in D minor.
parallel major/minor was very common since the baroque times (bach) and used very frequently by schubert... i wouldn't call it "crazy genius" any more.....
This piece is BRILLIANT - to bad they cant show the whole thing. You can buy it on ITunes and I believe it is 35 minutes or so. It is like Beethoven's Grosse Fugue with an opening that will bring goosebumps to anyones arms. In my opinion it is the greatest composition of the 20th century - not the most sappy and romantic but the greatest piece of pure COMPOSITION.
This is one of the best moments in the quartet (b minor fugal dev section) but I'd hardly call it the greatest piece. It has some very beautiful, almost haunting moments, but I would still posit that it is to some degree a flawed and student work.
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This shows his true genius as a musician, not only as a pianist. What a legendary figure in music history...

What happened, Glenn?

This is the climax of the classical quartet. Gould may have thought he didn't have a personal voice, but he had the voice of an era in this quartet.

Can anyone recommend a recording of this, and other of Glenn Gould's compositions? I think this is superb.

Certain passages are very Dvorakian for me. I love Dvorak's quartets.

I've never heard this work before and I have to say, objectively, that was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard!

@GV32 search "Glenn Gould-String Quartet Op.1-Alcan Quartet" now. Zenliguayette has recently posted (July 12 2011) with Odilon Redon artwork for the eyes!
