she actually reminds me of leona in this performance, she's shy and has this powerful yet quiet type of voice, and i mean that in a good way. Only Leona has a great belting voice but doesn't use it as much as Mariah does here.

Leona does have a great belting voice, but if you read my comment more carefully, I said she doesn't use it the way Mariah does here. When I say this, I imply that Mariah is a better singer because I know that she is. As for Leona, she and Mariah share some of the same vocal qualities, but Mariah uses her voice better.
@crazy2hazy Leona was trained as a classical singer though, and so her vocal style isn't comprised of the gospel and pop stuff that Mariah's is. Therefore you can't really compare the two styles. :)
Of course you can compare them. Leona may have had some classical training, but she doesn't sing with it on her records. The technique she uses is closer to Mariah's than someone like, say, Yma Sumac.
I guess I was referring to her reserved power. Notice how at the beginning she starts off soft and quiet and as the song progresses she unleashes tons of power and conveys so much emotion. It's almost like she's growing into herself on stage, it's quite interesting. That's a quality I think she and Leona share. Their light, fluttery tones make them seem smaller than they are until they start belting.
But this comment only applies to Leona and early Mariah (1990-92) only, because Mariah's vocals improved as well as her stage presence and she was able to convey that strength all the way through her performances in her prime.
And Leona does not sing with classical technique at all. Her genre is basically 90's pop, which has elements of R&B, rock, and whatever was the rage at the time. Her musical choice is a mix of Mariah, Whitney, and Celine, only not as good lol

Mariah is one of Leona's biggest influences, she's said it many times. Mariah's "Anytime you need a friend" is one of Leona's favorite songs. That in itself explains their similarities. All I did was draw a comparison that was taken far out of context.

Incredible performance! Wow! Notice American Idol's Randy Jackson on bass behind the back-up singers? (The "pre-makeover" Randy!) LOL. Man, was he feeling this. :-) Mariah was in the ZONE! IMO the result of focusing on VOCALS instead of your butt/boobs, the facial beauty mole you hide & people touching your body. Electric performance.

wow! nothing short of amazing. i would love to hear her sing like this again, especially because i was way too young to ever see her live during the early 90s.

very classic performance. I've always loved Mariah Carey... she's just an amazing writer and she's such a powerful singer. I'd kill to hear her sing this song these days. I believe with time her voice actually got more stronger and lost the young sound displayed in this clip. She's talent through and through. I'm so happy she proved people wrong in 2005-now who doubted her voice. Go MC!
