But since there's no "cuts", just a plain old invisible energy slice, i'd still say it's hokuto.

it looks like he just fissured all the guy's midline power points straight down the middle by ramming his touki through the guy's spine. (with nanto, the fighter usually slices his hand all the way through, or claws through like Rei.

In the 1986 movie, Ken also slices a wrecking ball in half. And I don't think he used any nanto moves in the movie...

He does use nanto occasionally but it's not his preference. As I remember, he used Shuu's style on Souther once, and he used Rei's style against Raoh when doing Muso Tensei in Rihaku's castle late in the series.

In HnK 2, Ken also uses Gento Kouken (specifically Soria's energy arc version) to slice through the first two Shura fighters he encounters from a distance.
