  • This show was probably over my head. I remember hating when it was on haha

but the intro really brings back memories of a simpler time

  • this was a odd show for me but i felt happy. because this makes me want to go up to a blacky and say, "hey! youre not so scary today!" ^_^

  • Growing up in the 80s, I remember finding sitcoms to be much funnier than the stuff they're coming up with today.

  • benSON

  • ...is that the house from The Fresh Prince Of Bel Aire?

  • I think you pronounce his name ah bear jay wah. It's French.

  • I liked the episode when Benson dropped acid and joined the Black Liberation Army and the bloody shootout with the cops took place when they took over the house and held everyone hostage.

  • @tomthefunky

I remember that episode! Gretchen was his lover, and they were pimping out Katie, and the Governor shot Marcie because she squealed on them and brought the whole enterprise down.

    Great episode.

  • I MISS THE 80'S!!! If there was a decade I sneak back into, it would definetely be the 1980's.

  • Love Robert G.... But how DO you say Rene's last name? Anyone got a line on that?? hahaha

  • This brings back so much memories.

  • I WANT TO BE A KID AGAIN IN THE 80S..........

  • @1IIIIIIIIII1 Me too......!!!!

  • Go to ioffer.com to buy the series set

  • BENSON was a great show. However, I think it definitely had the corniest theme song out of all the 80's shows.

  • Rene Auberjonois also did the voice of Dr. Braxis on "Challenge of the Gobots".

  • I remember watching this show

  • Does missy gold look like allison sweeney from days of our lives?

  • Hey Rene Auberjonois played that shape shifter on Star Trek Deep Space Nine,I never knew that until now.

  • I'd rather have the TV politicians myself. If Obama or George Bush Jr were in Independence Day, how many people would want them to survive? And Bill pulman wasn't even the best Movie president, but he'd still be a step up.

  • missy gold-- tracy gold's sister.

  • One of my all-time favorite shows!

  • I onced thought missy gold looked liked ali sweeney frm days of our lives

  • @JEEminn3000 Wow she does! But of course Missy Gold is way older than Ali

  • Who knew they lived there before the fresh prince of belair

  • The first show I saw Odo in.

  • @aztekarrow Odo portrayed Father Mulcahey in the 1970 movie version of M*A*S*H.

  • @yaggazoozy OH yeah that's right.

  • Two things: 1. I wish roody poo Sony would release the rest of this series on DVD (they did release season 1 a few years back). 2. This must be from the 1984-85 (sixth) season--Ethan Phillips and Didi Conn had left the cast in '84 and Billie Bird joined (to be the new "head of household affairs" Mrs. Rose Cassidy after Gretchen Kraus got hired as Benson's admin assistant).

  • Missy Gold oh soooooo gorgeous!!!

  • Missy Gold, with a name like that she should have been a pornstar!

  • I see Odo, wasn't Neelix on this show too?

  • @nooobsaibot Yes, his name was Pete and I believe he started in the second season.

  • @twcpa Correct. Ethan Phillips joined in 1980 as press secretary Pete Downey and he left the cast in 1984.

  • @twcpa OMG PETE! I remember Pete. that was Neelix?!!! LOL Would've never guessed. Doesn't look a thing like em.

  • @nooobsaibot I just found out about ODO. I didn't know about Neelix, which one is he? Haven't seen this in years, but I used to watch all the time. I didn't even remember all the cast changes. ODO wasn't there at the start by the intros. Which seasons was Neelix in? Anymore Star Trek surprises? LOL Was anyone on SOAP in Star Trek too? LOL I knew it!!!! Benson was a Kingon!!!!! JK

  • @Miracle490d Apparently Ethan Phillips didn't start until season 2.

  • Who was the better character? Clayton Endicott or Odo?

  • Clayton is a complete ass! Why is he turning the grandfather clock forward? Clayton is a very anal-retentive man.

  • @Edgehead10075 No shit Sherlock.

  • No need to be obnoxious. BTW, "No shit Sherlock" is kind of lame.

  • @Edgehead10075 You're a fucking moron.

  • You're a fag. Now go butt fuck your boyfriend, and quit bothering me.

  • BTW, it took you a month to come up with "You're a fucking moron"? Bwahahahahahahahaha!

  • For some reason I always think of Benson whenever I hear the phrase "Uncle Tom"

  • @maximino27 or uncle ben

  • A true 80s show but i hated Clayton he was a true snob! What was the point of turning the hands of that grandfather clock and try to look calm that didnt make sense at all! Ah the 80s shows was the best shows now sucks! Benson kinda of remind me of a Black Mr Belvedere!

  • CAROLINE MCWILLIAMS

    1945-2010

    Rest In Peace

    Played Marcy on Benson

  • @Andy1972206 and she was on soap too

  • Whatever happened to Missy Gold? She hasn't acted since the late 80's!

  • @sirleucelot She is now a psychologist in Maine.

  • the exterior of the house looks just like the one on "Fresh Prince of Bel Air"

  • @Disneydanny Close but not quite

  • @Disneydanny It was also featured in a Season 1 episode of Barnaby Jones, as well as some of it's interior. Bill Bixby was the main guest star.

  • Anybody remember when the Governor's staff was navigating through a simulated nuclear attack in a fallout shelter? At the end, the Governor abandons the project and the plot of the episode and ends with a monologue crying for help and pleading for someone in the TV audience to figure out how to stop the arms race and Cold War.

  • @TnseWlms The Arpanet (predecessor to the Internet) was referenced in that episode, the first such reference on any sitcom.

  • I never thought Bensons character was that funny.. If they had to do a spinoff of Soap why didn't they do one of Burt Cambell or Chuck and Bob.

  • I didn't much like the cliffhanger....though the show tanked in the ratings. Anyone remember the "Haley's Comet" dream sequence episode? Krause: "We are going to be the next Adam and Eve"

  • three elements that made this show go....benson vs clayton, benson vs krause, and the cluelessness of the governor. The best episodes are the ones with marcy and clayton..season 2 and the early portion of season 3....my fav episode is the one where krause pretends to be benson's wife to impress her friend..the "It's a Living" manager

  • Tonight on Barack I mean Benson. Hah Hah

  • No,,Benson was smart and solved problems.

  • Hah hah. Why did I get five thumbs down? Does no one have a sense of humour anymore?

  • @sfitscher I wish we had a president like that

  • I'll always remember my favorite character was Clayton and I hated Benson because he was mean to him. I also felt bad that Missy Gold had to be on a show with a bunch of stuffy old people and no other kids!

  • haha one of my friends nickname is Benson haha:) it sounds so off when i say The Benson Show haha:) Her real name is Benedikte:)

  • I'm diggin' that bari sax in the song!

  • Yes, they are sisters.

  • MIssy Gold was Tracy Gold's sister, correct?

  • "Missy Gold" sounds like a porn-name!

  • Is that the house in the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air?

I need to get my hands on this show.

  • I said the same thing -- well actually I said "That's the same effing house from Prince of Bel-Air!" I wonder if it really is....anyone know?!

  • I remember watching an episode where Benson and Clayton were trashing each other in a contest to win an inheritence; anyone know where to find a video of it?

  • Wasn't there a Benson intro where he gets out of a cab, gets sprayed by sprinklers, and gets chased by 2 dogs?

  • that sounds so horrible!

  • I believe that that was the Season 1 intro

  • that was the intro for the pilot

  • A lot of people from this show ended up on Star Trek. In addition to Rene, Ethan Phillips was a regular on this show at one point, and he played nelix on Voyager. I believe Robert Picardo (The Doctor) also appeared occasionally on this show as well.

  • you trekkie geek...

  • Ooooh! Are you jealous, because we know some stuff, you might not even understand?? Run, Jess, run! Knowledge is behind you, bitin' your ass!

  • trivia isnt knowledge kid... LOL... trust me, Im not phased by your little geek shit... im the one who nets more a month than you annually gross.

  • I'm sure about that! That might just be the reason, why you're spendin' so much time here, pissin' other people off! You've got nothing else to do, Mr. Highroller!

  • spending so much time here? you mean you whining and bitching like a little girl over a comment made 2 months ago? good one there fat kid... LOL... get a life loser.

  • I'm tryin'! Life runs faster than fat kids! Don't fuck with Trekkies!!! We can build phasers out uf napkins and bubblegum!

    Live long and prosper! LOL!!!

  • errright.... and you wonder why you cant get laid.

  • no he wonders why YOU can't get laid.

  • yeah, okay, homie... LOL

  • good then shut up

  • uncle tom

  • I watched this a lot when I was a kid ... Kraus with her German temper was one of my favorite characters.

I remember my parents referring to this series as a "black" program like the Cosby Show, even though there was only one black actor.

  • Rene also played Father Mulcahey in the 1970 theatrical movie mash which the 72-83 sitcom was based on and the 1969 novel by richard hooker

  • Rene was great as Father Mulcahey. He was also funny in another Robert Altman movie, Brewster McCloud. Underrated talent.

  • Billie Bird is a weird little person.

  • Billie Bird's dead by now, right???

  • Yes...she died of Alzheimers' disease several years ago.

  • 22 years before Obama, we had Benson running for Governor of a State.

  • Rene Auberjonois (Clayton) went on to star on "Boston Legal" for a good while, Robert Guillame also had another sitcom in "Sports Night," which many people praised, but got cancelled too soon. Both Guillame and Ethan Phillips (Pete from S2-S5) both reunited on the 1989 movie "Lean on Me" w/ Morgan Freeman, I also remember Didi Conn (Denise, who was later Pete's lover from S3-S5) when she worked on "Shining Time Station" in the early '90s as well.

  • Forget Boston Legal. Rene's defining role was that of Constable Odo on Star Trek Deep Space Nine.

Even if you have no interest in Star Trek, go see the video titled 'Odo and Kira' that is 10 minutes long. It was a superb role for Rene, and the video will move you.

  • When the show ended, Missy Gold decided to go to University and eventually left Hollywood. I was absolutely in love with her. She was so beautiful. I really wish she would have done what her sister Tracey did and at least have done some movies when she had a chance away from her studies.

  • ..yep, everytime I watch DS9, I expect Odo to get real irritated and scream BENNNSOOONN !!!!!

  • For me, Odo is the primary role I see Rene in. Whenever I watch Boston Legal, I expect William Shatner's cigar to morph into Odo and for Odo to say that this is conduct inappropriate for a Starfleet Officer.

  • nicely done kmg4 !!

  • on which channel do they show benson?

  • I haven't seen Benson in syndication. Check out Hulu for several episodes from seasons 1 and 2.

  • @bubblebear83 Seems silly that with the exception of s1, Benson isn't out there. After a 7 season run, you'd think there'd be more interest. In my infinite wisdom, I taped one episode of each of my favorite shows in 80, 81, 82, 83 and 84, thinking it would be more difficult to find these shows 20-30 years later. For the most part, you can find all the shows on DVD. Benson being an exception. I probably have one episode of a s2 Benson and maybe one s3 and/or 4, but that's it. Sorry.

  • @ryansthemovieguy What episodes of Benson do you have (in titles)? Do you have some episodes from Season 4? Unfortunately, I scared that you are going to be copyright infringement by posting videos up on YouTube.

  • @bubblebear83 my dad accidentally used my account and commented on this youtube video, i don't know about this show at all!

  • @ryansthemovieguy No prob. Some of us did not remember much about this show.

  • Miss Gold is now a PHD and married...towards the end of

Benson's run on ABC TV..She became very beautiful.

  • Sung to the first notes of the theme music: ...."BENNNSON....NOTHING BUT BENNNNSON...THERE'S NOTHING ELSE ONNN

  • Whatever happened to Missy Gold? I but she's a lot hotter now!

  • I wish I could go back and time and watch the 80s happen.

  • @wheatpuff I was a teenager and I do miss it.

  • @wheatpuff Me too. I was born in '80. Billy Bird was the cutest thing too. However, I would NOT want to have Reagan as the president again!!!!

  • @Jibjub80

I Rather have reagan then have nobama, bushit jr and other things.

  • @jmjfanss I'd rather have Obama than Raygun. What I think that most people don't realize is how difficult Obama's job is (trying to clean up the mess that Bush Jr. created). GWB left the country in a shambles

  • @Jibjub80

Who cares, both parties have sold out this country and quit supporting globalist nobama, he's a CFR Member working for the global corporate elite and the big bankers, you better off supporting ron paul for president.

    END THE FED!

  • The Eli Vance is skilled in the ways of cleaning the house.

  • Two members of this show went on to become famous Star Trek icons. Funny how things work.

  • benson for president!

  • This show was the best! I show miss it.

  • Thank heaven they brought R.A. on the show. That dude in season one was a loser!

  • So was Clayton Endicott the first openly-gay character on a network sitcom? Or was there some dude on Maude?

  • There was never a mention about Clayton being gay on "Benson" - I think you have him confused with Billy Crystal's character Jody Dallas on "Soap", as he was one of the first openly gay characters on a sitcom, and "Benson" spun off from "Soap" as well.

  • I like the Benson character. It seems like he's the only sane person on the show. Robert Guillaume was great on here.

  • @beachball8088 yeah, it was a spinoff show from the comedy series SOAP

  • Wasn't Billie Bird one of the grandmothers in Sixteen Candles?

  • Yes.

  • Billie Bird was also on Dear John w/ Judd Hirsch from 1988-92 as well.

  • You know I never saw this theme song for this show I thought it felt more appropriate with a courtroom sitcom like Night Court.

  • cant wait till rene auberjonois' seasons come out. the guy they had in his position in season one stunk

  • I agree. Rene Auberjonois was much, much better. I hope they release more seasons on DVD. It's been more than a year since the first one came out. That usually means it's not selling well when it takes that long.

  • you're talking Lewis J. Stadlen, aka Taylor from S1?

He was far more uptight than Clayton was. They both had annoying presences, but w/ Clayton, at least on some eps. you couldn't help but to feel sorry for him, especially in that episode where he has a flashback in his days as a teacher or something like that and people used to get make fun of him and his last name.

  • now THAT'S what i'm talking bout!!! back in the day Robert Guillaume was my HERO when i was a kid!

clayton vs. benson was the best. too bad we can't make shows like this today!

  • Good question. In the upload process it was cut off. It misses about 4 to 5 seconds. The theme is 35 seconds and the video is 33 seconds. The ending of this video goes to black, so there are about 2 to 3 seconds of the beginning that are missing.

  • howcome half the beginng is cut off

  • Was Missy Gold Tracey's sister?

  • Yes she is the younger sister.

  • I think Carol Burnett would have been great on that show as a sparring partner for Benson...I can just see her saying "LOOOOOOOTENANT GOVERNOR" with her eyes spinning around

  • It was a very fun show. At least until Benson became Lieutenant Governor and eventually ran for governor. I think by then it had jumped the shark.

  • I actually thought that was the best season

(1984-85). There were some really good episodes, such as the one where Clayton thought he was Benson, after losing an award to him, and the episode where they prepped for a nucleur attack. Also, Robert Guillaume won an Emmy that season.

  • I loved this show, all the characters were fun in their own ways.
