My 60gb went ylod 3wks ago, diecided to fix it today, with your guide.......nice one m8, works a treat and its as quiet as a mouse, have a happy new year....
I'm having texture problems - they often go off into infinity and it's really ugly. Also, I'm having freezing problems with certain games (usually the same games that have texture problems). I have two questions:
1: I've heard that this is an indication that my PS3 is about to YLOD. Is this so?
2: If this is the case, will the fix solve my graphical and freezing issues, assuming it's done right?
Your the main man I have fixed 3 ps3's. In the last week following your guide. I just fixed a 80gb one tonight but it is totally different inside compared to a 60 . But it worked lol. One thing I did have to do was put it in recovery menu to set output up as I couldn't get any pic or sound on hdmi or av.
Thanks a lot bud you have made a lot of perish happy
Hi gilksy, I tried to fix the ylod following your guide and I got my ps3 to turn on again but I get a message saying that the system is too hot and it shuts down in about 15 seconds of it being on. I have a 60gig phat, any idea why it would do that?
Funny Thing, i just bought one on ebay, it Yloded after one day without real use so i got f-ing mad and watched your tut ;D "! HA! what did i see ? it was alrdy openede which got me even madder, i used a hair dryer cuz i dont have a HeatGun, and i thought there alrdy is way too much HScompound on the parts so i just wiped one clear. The 2 black rubber parts were missing, how could i replace it (question to anyone) and i reassembled it, and BAM! It works! :) THANK YOU VERY MUCH BRO
@Jerico1830 Either the power supply isn't connected up propperly or the on/off assemble hasn't been connected propperly. Open up your ps3 and souble check everything, be extra cautious.
View my channel for a STEP BY STEP guide on how you can FIX YOUR PS3 in less than an hour! WITHOUT the need for Heat Guns, Voiding your Warranty, or wasting any of your TIME or MONEY!
i recomend drilling some holes in ur case underneath the fan or cut out a big hole for more air suply or it will heat up again and u got another ylod u should also put bigger rubber spacers under ur ps3 when doing this
@josecruise630 Fixing the YLOD is temporary at best, most if not all of the people who fix their YLOD eventually end up doing it again, it can last anywhere between 2 weeks and 2 months in general.
It's more of a mean to allow yourself enough time to power it back on to transfer your data to a new PS3.
@FetusZero yes ive tried this and its worked great til now,2-3 months of good use, ironically it dies when im using it alot less cos the network is down!........can i just keep doing this fix indefinately?......has anyone done this fix more than one?if so are the fixes lasting as long
I got a question. people are saying I am getting YLOD but I don't think I am. I turn on the ps3 and about a minute or 2 the ps3 shuts off and all lights shut off. I am guessing the power supply is bad?
I fixed my ps3 but now It turns on then the fan stars working slow then speeds up like crazy it sounds like its gonna blow up but it shutdown by itself this happens every time I turn it on,It won't even let me get my game back , I don't know what I did wrong please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mine jus went from doing ylod instantly to lasting about 2 minutes then ylod again, did i just not put enough thermal compound or not heat the board enough?

i just wanna say thank you a lot ,u saved my,now working perfectly, i managed to save everything from ps3, save block, acc ,thank you very very much :)

PS3 Reballing is a profissional procedure , it require top of the line machines and very high skills, google it to find someone to do it for you. Its not going to be done at home or for free but it will permenantly fix that problem and all other video problems.
You guys need to stop this crazyness, YLOD has only one real repair, its reballing , hundres of thousands of people have lost their systems for good following these crap videos and everybody else needs to stop before it is too late, just an honst advice for whoever would accept it.
hey gilksy thank you so much for this video,i fix my ps3 with your ps3,but it happen agin ,after 3 or 4 week i get the ylod ! im already fix my ps3 3time ,do you have a way to use ps3 after fixing ylod ..like dont use a ps3 more than 1hour ,or ..... ? and one more thing first time i get the ylod when the ps3 is on ,but secend and 3rd time i get the ylod after i turn off my ps3 in the night and next morning when i turn it on it give me a ylod !! any idia ? thanks (sorry for my poor english)
Where can I buy that thermal compound? I've open my ps3 and everything but forgot about the thermal compound ! So any help plzz I wanna know where to buy it.
Sorry to post another question, could not squeeze it into my earlier post.
After doing the reflow procedure, instead of totally re-assembling the PS(hit)3, is there any thing I can leave out, eg, the blue ray drive, hdd, the final cover with its single fiddly cable, etc, and yet be able to power up the set, just to see if the reflow worked.
Idea is to save some re-opening time and effort if the reflow did not work and I want to try again.
I tried the reflow method a couple of times following djwhetzel's. No Joy!
About to give up when I found your vids.
Going to try your method (ie reflow additional components as compared to djwhetzel )
Just a question. If I heat the gpu, cpu, etc too hot, I think something will be fried. So, what temp is "too high" ?
My heat gun has 375C on low switch selection. I am holding the nozzle about 2 inches from the component. I am really afraid of frying any of the components by over heating it!
Many, many thanks gilksy for sharing this 6 part tutorial. Yellow light showed up 2 days ago and by chance found your vid while researching. Aside from purchasing a heat gun the process went extremely well. I even sanded down the heat sink pads smoother and flatter for better contact with the vga's chips (computer over clocking trick). Added fresh artic silver, rebuilt the system after a good cleaning, plugged her back in and BAM - she's working great. Saved me a bundle and time. Thanks!
Well... I had sucess with his method.. however my $20.00 heat gun from bunnings, even on its apparent setting of 300degree, fried a chip.... :( So it turns on (YLOD fixed).... but now i get stars on my screen. Are the ram chips near the RSX chips has a bubble on it. If there is a way to replace that chip an someone PM me. Cheers

Tried this, It worked but unfortinutly only a month, Gona buy one off ebay that won't read discs and switch blu ray players....If you have the same problem, this may be your cheapsest bet...Ive seen them go for pennys on the dollar. But dont hold me accountable if it doesnt work either.
soooo.....i did everything he said but it still didnt work :(. But maybe because i didnt take some of the metal of because one of the hard drive holder screws wouldnt come of. Does the metal have to be off?
i fix my ps3 3 weeks ago and today i got ylod again but i think this ylod is not a normal ylod because sometimes my ps3 turns on and i can acces the menu but after 30sec maybe 1 min it goes down again and when i turn it on again it gets ylod
and if i continue turning it on it stays on for 30 sec should i repair it as it was a normal YLOD plz answer me PLZZZZZZ
Ok I did everything to my ps3 and what not and it fixed the ylod. But now it wont read disc or play psn games? whats wrong? did I hook something up wrong?
@baggyboy12 Checked it, Since I posted that Ive redone it almost a dozen times everything gets connected and is in the proper spot. Although my new thinking is that connecter when I put the one side of the metal case I guess you could say...that connecter that leads to the power/eject button did get crushed, my thinking is I damaged that connecter. Thats the only thing I can think of though. Everything else is exactly in the same spot as before I took it apart and in the same condition.
@Glisky I finished it! Just plugged it in and turned the switch on and the power doesn't even come on. No Fan running, or no red light coming on...I'm not sure why, I did everything just as you did. I was wondering if you had any ideas. All plugs were put back and connected as well. Thanks.
@xFamGuyFanx go back to 3:38 of this video, the connector he connects to the little board is the one which powers up the ps3.. i remember i had the same problem as you and i fixed it by double checking and seeing if i plugged that connector in.
GGGGGIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLKKKKKKSSSSSSSYYYYYYYYYY I LOVE YOU. IM a guy and thats pretty homo to say but you saved my PS3. im definately gonna donate to you. everyone out there just follow what he does and it works! i honestly taught it was but he work!. YOU THE MAN!
yeah my buddy skipped the heat part.... Got a free PS3 till i go to basic.
I used a barbie pink hair dryer uped the heating times and im sorry but solder cools fast as well as Processors.... thats what they do. cut cool down to 7min. but thanks anywho for your free guide it worked. I am guessing however that only the gpu and other processor are what get unsolderd. i have a 40g Different and simpler than the ps3 shown.
@1994toyotasupra You need to reset the cogs in the drive. It's easy to do, you just need to remove one of the cogs and it all clicks back into place. there is a video on youtube, look it up.
Thanks gilksy im proud of my self lol took two tries first time i had the heat sync pads in the wrong place and didnt heat the cpu hot enough i think but its working great now...Thanks again
Thanks gilksy im proud of my self lol took two tries first time i had the heat sync pads in the wrong place and didnt heat the cpu hot enough i think but its working great now...Thanks again
i have done this about 5 times now but the other week i ran out of thermal compound so i bought some off ebay 2 weeks later i put the thermal pate on and put it back togeather. now when i plug it in flip the power switch i dont even get a red light??? WTF is going on here?
hey my name is Deon pilot and ive been a victim of ylod for the ps3. until i had fixed this mi self. Sony chrages over 150 dollars plus shipping and handeling. i charge as little as 25$ or so. i have done this over 5 times and is an excpert at this. if your ps3 cannont be fixed it will be shipped back with full refund. If im able to fix it i will send it back in working condition and also include a list of steps to prevent this from occuring again. please send me a message with your phone number
for those who have a disc in the blu ray drive, you can get it out prior to fix. Keep your finger in the eject button, turn off the ps3 with the switch in back and turn it back on keeping your finger on the eject button the whole time. This will power the fan on for about 60 seconds and eject the disc.
I've done this fix 4 times now, worked for around 24 hours each time - do not use it as a permanent solution, get everything backed up to a new ps3, I'm backing up to my new Slim as I write this. Great tutorial though! Thanks!
@ottoboyzzz This suggests that your not using enough/using too much heat sink paste (or you have lost some pads). And this is causing your motherboard to overheat again.
@ottoboyzzz If you use flux it should work for about a month, even longer!!!!!! Look at Gilksys other videos on fluxing and clamp bending! You can get a kit off ebay with flux, thermal compound, isopropyl wipes and a guide for a fiver! Everythiung you need for a fiver! Mine came next day aswell, got it from jsuvsps3 on ebay.
@Prodigy958 Yes, to much arcitc silver = bad, if you apply to much it doesnt work as well, and a thin layer of it wont touch the fan pads, so you should use a cheaper kind, one that you can apply a lot of
Ummmm....yeah, I followed your instructions and it sucessfully came back on,
but now my disc drive want read or eject my COD MW2 and the game doesn't show up under the Games section. I was wondering is there anyway to like fix that to eject or do I have to wait for it to like read the drive????
I fixed my ylod yesterday, and i originally used this video, but it didnt work because i used arctic silver, which you have to apply a really thin layer or it doesnt work, and 15 seconds of heating wasnt enough. So i found another video (not as nearly as descriptive as gilsky's) but combnined really work well. djwhetzel, is the the video i got the technique i used from, and i would recommend a cheaper thermal paste that you can put a lot of on so it touches the pads on the fans,
@stevejoebob1 had the same issue yesterday, worked for 1 min, then it quit again. I will try it again today. So you only used very litlle arctic silver and it worked?
@stuelcken No, my friend (who is a computer genious) said there is no point in putting a lot of arctic silver on, because to much actually makes it lose its ability to disperse heat, and when we applied a little bit of arctic silver it didnt touch the fan pads, so we applied a lot of a different, cheaper, kind of thermal paste, we also heated for longer. And to make sure this wont happen again soon, i keep it in an open area, and turn off the power switch when im done playing, just to be safe.
@stuelcken No, we did not even use arctic silver because there was no point, and a lot of arctic silver makes it so it cant act to its full potential, so my friend and I used some cheap stuff that we could smear a lot of on the pad. Sadly i got the YLOD again, and we ended up ruining it trying for a reball, which i would not recomend unless you have proper tools and someway to get the chip off, which is quite big.
I followed gilksy's videos step by step and it worked. It was amazing to bring my ps3 back to life, however.......beware this appears to only be a temporary fix. The console has now got the YLOD again. It failed on me last night and had only lasted 2 months!!
@SuperFuzzmonkey My friend (the computer genious) says the only probably permanent fix would be reballing with lead, but this could end up being an expensive fix, but better than buying another PS3
@codpawnage yea theres different types but common sense, it pretty much shows you everything to do. Mine broke today and i have a old 40GB and i just got it running with $3 thermal compound and a hair dryer. Shit really works, i thought i was fucked out of a ps3 and my CoD game.
When you place the Power unit back on to the board, the earth cable comes in the way at the end. Is it okay to unscrew the cable and then re screw it over the hole?
Thank you very mach!!! sorry i don't speak english , i'm speak spanish!!!!! gracias de verdad excelente video, muchas gracias, nick name ps3 is schumy28x,gracias.
It worked for a while and i was really happy. but once i did a system update, (about 2 months without play), it stopped at 67 percent when installing. it kept saying "error code 80010006." whenever it restarts so it can try again, it will just keep failing at the same percentage. i cannot go to the main menu, nothing. keeps trying the system update fail. anyone know the solution to this? any help would be much appreciated.
thanks

Where can I buy that thermal compound? I've open my ps3 and everything but forgot about the thermal compound ! So any help plzz I wanna know where to buy it.

Hi again
Sorry to post another question, could not squeeze it into my earlier post.
After doing the reflow procedure, instead of totally re-assembling the PS(hit)3, is there any thing I can leave out, eg, the blue ray drive, hdd, the final cover with its single fiddly cable, etc, and yet be able to power up the set, just to see if the reflow worked.
Idea is to save some re-opening time and effort if the reflow did not work and I want to try again.
shinco52 1 year ago

Cheers

Everything else is exactly in the same spot as before I took it apart and in the same condition.
xFamGuyFanx 1 year ago
@Glisky I finished it! Just plugged it in and turned the switch on and the power doesn't even come on. No Fan running, or no red light coming on...I'm not sure why, I did everything just as you did. I was wondering if you had any ideas. All plugs were put back and connected as well. Thanks.

@xFamGuyFanx go back to 3:38 of this video, the connector he connects to the little board is the one which powers up the ps3.. i remember i had the same problem as you and i fixed it by double checking and seeing if i plugged that connector in.

yeah my buddy skipped the heat part....

It's easy to do, you just need to remove one of the cogs and it all clicks back into place. there is a video on youtube, look it up.

for those who have a disc in the blu ray drive, you can get it out prior to fix.

Thanks!
ottoboyzzz 1 year ago
@ottoboyzzz This suggests that your not using enough/using too much heat sink paste (or you have lost some pads). And this is causing your motherboard to overheat again.
Stevros3 1 year ago
@ottoboyzzz If you use flux it should work for about a month, even longer!!!!!! Look at Gilksys other videos on fluxing and clamp bending! You can get a kit off ebay with flux, thermal compound, isopropyl wipes and a guide for a fiver! Everythiung you need for a fiver! Mine came next day aswell, got it from jsuvsps3 on ebay.

Prodigy958 1 year ago
@Prodigy958 Yes, to much arcitc silver = bad, if you apply to much it doesnt work as well, and a thin layer of it wont touch the fan pads, so you should use a cheaper kind, one that you can apply a lot of

12flufff 1 year ago
I fixed my ylod yesterday, and i originally used this video, but it didnt work because i used arctic silver, which you have to apply a really thin layer or it doesnt work, and 15 seconds of heating wasnt enough. So i found another video (not as nearly as descriptive as gilsky's) but combnined really work well. djwhetzel, is the the video i got the technique i used from, and i would recommend a cheaper thermal paste that you can put a lot of on so it touches the pads on the fans,
stevejoebob1 1 year ago
@stevejoebob1 had the same issue yesterday, worked for 1 min, then it quit again. I will try it again today. So you only used very litlle arctic silver and it worked?
stuelcken 1 year ago
@stuelcken No, my friend (who is a computer genious) said there is no point in putting a lot of arctic silver on, because to much actually makes it lose its ability to disperse heat, and when we applied a little bit of arctic silver it didnt touch the fan pads, so we applied a lot of a different, cheaper, kind of thermal paste, we also heated for longer. And to make sure this wont happen again soon, i keep it in an open area, and turn off the power switch when im done playing, just to be safe.
stevejoebob1 1 year ago
@stuelcken No, we did not even use arctic silver because there was no point, and a lot of arctic silver makes it so it cant act to its full potential, so my friend and I used some cheap stuff that we could smear a lot of on the pad. Sadly i got the YLOD again, and we ended up ruining it trying for a reball, which i would not recomend unless you have proper tools and someway to get the chip off, which is quite big.

PureDomination48 1 year ago
I followed gilksy's videos step by step and it worked. It was amazing to bring my ps3 back to life, however.......beware this appears to only be a temporary fix. The console has now got the YLOD again. It failed on me last night and had only lasted 2 months!!
SuperFuzzmonkey 1 year ago
@SuperFuzzmonkey My friend (the computer genious) says the only probably permanent fix would be reballing with lead, but this could end up being an expensive fix, but better than buying another PS3
stevejoebob1 1 year ago
@codpawnage yea theres different types but common sense, it pretty much shows you everything to do. Mine broke today and i have a old 40GB and i just got it running with $3 thermal compound and a hair dryer. Shit really works, i thought i was fucked out of a ps3 and my CoD game.

You should really disconnect the ribbons from both areas and reconnect them again...
It's pretty stupid keeping wires attached to boards that you are moving around.
