His playing of the Elgar concerto sounds deeper and more resonant (and more pleasing) than Yo Yo Ma's. Is it the cello, or is he actually playing in a lower key? Or could it be a difference in recording quality?
This could only have been written at the twilight of the British empire. But what a great piece it is! German composers could never write something quite like this. Schubert, of course, could, but then again he was Austrian.
Wonderful! One of the two greatest cello concertos in the repertory, the other being the Dvorak Concerto...what a treat to hear Webber with Lord Menuhin conducting, who knew Elgar's music like the back of his hand
I said that to the person stating that it was "Much better than du Pre's Version," not to the other people just saying that they like it better.
It seems to me that to say something like that is simply too disrespectful to the life she led and the music she created to be left alone. I have no problem with somebody saying they like one version or the other better.
I love this performance. The music flows so naturally.Menuhin recorded Elgar's Violin Concerto with Elgar conducting. He really knows Elgar's music and his accompaniment fits Lloyd Webber's beautifully unforced performance like a glove.
i do like this version! except for the run at 2:34 - it feels stunted and doesn't flow and build up to what is the climax of the piece :/
apart from that it's great! i love the more brooding feeling he gives to this fantastic movement!

@davehshs it's most likely the recording, although every cello sounds different.

many people seemed to prefer du pre's version, but for the 3rd movement, personally i prefer julian webber

His playing seems too... dignified for this work. I prefer Du Pre.

I have always loved listening to the sad, haunting tone of the cello and Julian Lloyd Webber plays it beautifully.

To my mind, it is a little bit too strong

You know, this Concerto is just amazing, and it would seem that this Concerto and Stradivari instruments were made for each other......

Much better than du Pré's Version

I like du Pre's better.
But thats just me.

I think du Pre's version is better in the part after the main theme and conclusion to it, but Lloyd Webber's is better in the first 4 minutes or so.

Do you write that to every critic? Incredible as it might seem to you, a Comments section is for leaving comments. What an asshole.....

He doesn't have to prove anything. That's the great thing about having your own opinions.

I must say I can't decide which performance I like better - Du Pre's or his.
I think she gives a little more than him to this piece, but he is still great.
