I like this cute little ditty a lot - had the 45 when I was 6 years old. However, in recent years I've wondered if this isn't one of those songs with a "hidden" meaning? After all, why wouldn't she have the key for the hole on the bottoms her brand new roller skates?
@kungfuru1 She is talking about rollerskates, and back when this song was made, roller skates fit around the shoes. So on this bottom of the skates, a key was pushed into a keyhole. When the key was turned, the skates would tighten to fit the shoe. When they would but skates they came with a key to tighten the skates. However, the skates would loosen very easily, so skaters would wear the key around their neck.
Oh my God! I love this song. The 60's & 70 the best decades for music ever. I remember this song so fondly as a boy of 5 & 6. Thank you Melanie for your sweetness.
I'm sitting here in class looking around and everyone's on their computer looking up lamb of god, chiodos, and all kinds of other new music, and scream-o......and i'm sitting here listening to melanie safka and other 60's music, and I wonder, what's happened to the music today?
I first noticed this song on the Boogie Nights album (for some reason, I didn't notice it while watching the film) and since then, it has held a very special place in my heart. Lives next to "I want to marry a lighthouse keeper". ^_^
I've always loved the line: "Some people say I've done alright for a girl." Says more than hours of stridency (which unfortunately Melanie provides in a lot of her other songs, as I found out when I picked up a "Best of" collection).
im one who lives in the past, I picked up "todays super great hits" on 8 track, and this song was on there. A instant hit, except the fact i have to listen to the whole 8 track before i get the chance hear this song again.
A couple of months ago this song was played on the oldies station at work. Noone had ever heard it before, but everyone started singing along and just had to know who sang it. So catchy.
i got a brand new pair of rollerskates, you got a brand new keyyy....<3
