One of the nices bit of abject grovling i've ever come across, if of course we ignore little things like the check out woman won't be watching ....... how do you know this ? Is this a prisumption to add to your collection of presumptions.......hay, but there for the grace of god, i would suggest go us all !!!!
I'm fattist ....its the way I was raised. I do appreciate that food can be a vice ..and i have vice's ...vice's I would benifit from changing. But its NOT easy. And ...food is lovely.
I love all these commenters who can only speak/think in absolute terms.
People are overweight for many reasons.
Personally, I'm about 40-50 lbs over my medically ideal weight.
That's because of the crap I eat, my laziness regarding exercise, my laziness regarding putting forth the effort to make healthier food (vs warming up a HotPocket), eating habits (boredom eating/comfort eating) and lastly, my clinical depression (sucks out energy and tends to make me apathetic about everything, even my he
Continued,as I siad about the irish film the divide,in the barn scene,I played the dead body to the left of the main character, almost hugging him as it was so cold.
Anyway keep up the good work, lots of love from your fans. My 14 year old daughter loves red dwarf.
Eating releases more endorphins than almost anything that is "non narcotic" or "sexual" in nature. Also, in Christian culture we downplay Gluttony as being a "serious" sin. American Christians tend to be the most overweight group of people in the world. Before you jump on me for revealing this fact I want to tell you that I"m a 200lb. American Christian that would like to lose 30 pounds...
No Apology needed. Facts are Facts. If anyone wants to eat themselves to death well let them at it ,it's their choice. To cure an addiction you need to admit to yourself that you have a problem in the first place. Your comments may save lives. Pretending it's not a problem... is the problem. Fair play to yea!!!
I'm sort of hedging my bets here...as the everyday bloke on the street, what I see is:
yes, fat people can block corridors and walk slowly, which is annoying for people with OCD like myself.
But on the other hand, they can be valued members of society - take Brian Blessed, for instance. His beard reinforces his image, but his size really helps along with his noise level to make him a very funny man. It just "feels" right.
fat people are given a bad time and like all of us they can make a serious and worthile contribution to society.they should all be taken to africa and let the natives there boil and eat the fuckers and that in itself would solve the african problem.and at christmas as a special treat send dawn french and lenny henry, fuck me ,they would have some left over for next christmas if they had freezers, but that seems unlikely as a lot of them dont even have houses.maybe not such a good idea.!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know this is an old video but im new to Roberts channel and have only just got round to watching it. I myself am a stone or 2 overweight and i used to be clinically obese but worked hard to lose that weight. So yes, to all those people saying it is possible, i agree it is, but to suggest that obese people deserve no sympahty is ridiculous. It IS partly genetic, in that some people retain weight a lot easier than others and have to work twice as hard to keep it off as someone naturally slim.
II know that my friends who are naturally slim can eat pretty much what they like, and only exercise occasionally but stay slim. I on the other hand have to count calories, fat levels, exercise, never eat chocloate, sweets, crisps, chips etc (all food that my friends can eat regularly), just to MAINTAIN my weight. How quickly would you people whine if they had to have the same lifestyle as myself. Yes, i can and did put it right but i didnt choose to have to work much harder to keep it off.
As a semi-overweight teenager, I don't think you meant any true offense. I agree with you that obesity is a problem, especially in the USA (where I live).
However, I think I can state from what I've seen that you are a generally nice and polite man, and I am sure that on an individual level you'd never mean to upset any heavier-set person with your opinions.
Your rant AND your apology prove your human-ness. Thank you for sharing both sides with us all.
takes a big man to speak honestly and an even bigger man to admit when he's wrong. Good on you for saying sorry.
I will be honest and say I have no sympathy for over weight people when it's their own fault for being that size. But I also have no bad feelings towards them. I don't care what a person looks like, people are people what ever size, colour or what ever. Again it's goo that you made a vid to apologise. :)
it takes an honest, good man to apologize in front of everyone, so i give you "props" for apologizing, even tho i'm not overweight. its nice to see for once that men can get up the courage an say sorry for once!!!
I am sure you will be forgiven we are all but human, and you expressed your contrition so well in this matte. People surely would not want you to leave UTUBE, over this or worry to much about your concerns on editing etc.
Publish and be damned may be ok for wellington.
WE CAN ONLY sympathise with the sensitivities
that some of your productions may produce in the world of humour. Please though do not let this small fault have any effect on your tremendous creativity. regards
I am overweight, yet I took no offence to your comments. I imagine that if you met me, like the sales assistant you mentioned, you would be as socialable, charming and polite as you would to anyone else. However, if I was scoffing down a greasy hamburger while complaining about being overweight (which is what you referred to), then you have EVERY reason to get annoyed! I get just as worked up about the very same thing! So Bob, please don't let comments affect your future vids and the editing
After watching the 100 People video, I like you even more. The swearing I loved, it showed you were human, like the rest of us. I loved the honesty, and I hope you don't censor yourself in future.
I'm weighing in on the conversation a bit late (no pun intended!) but I've just discovered all these juicy tidbits of youtube that Bobbie has done in the past couple of years. I'm kinda watching them in a backward order, first watching the Tone video, then watching the video he referenced, then this apology. First of all, Robert, with the entire series of Scrapheap Challenge ABC2 is playing all at once here in Aus, I've come to really admire and respect you.
Well, I think most people do something like that. They feel pissed off, so they post a rant publicly on the internet. Then somebody takes offence, and sends an 'irate' message, as you put it. You then feel like shit, and either take the offending article down or post an apology.
Hi Robert, My Sister is very slim, and she get's picked on by the big people at the office were she works. This is just, because she is a size 7. you should'nt feel bad, about that vid/comment. It isn't fair on you, is it?
Fat people have been shunned by society due to their unpleasant odor and general interruption to the fast lane on escalators. Is this fair? I think so, but if the CERN particle accelerator in Geneva has any say in the matter we will soon be bowing down to all fatties as our rightful lords and masters.
Higgs Bosun particles, In theory, gravitate towards the most popular particles, thus giving a particle its mass. The Higgs Bosun is also known as the God particle - do you see where this is heading? Fat people are very very popular. God Loves Fat People. When judgment day comes, those of us who wern't complete bastards might be lucky enough to get jobs washing fat people's undies or cleaning their foreskins with tooth picks. The rest of us will surely burn in Hell...
Yeah, I eat healthily, have not ate a McCrap for 20 years, but I like a drink and will not change in that respect. I eat loads of veg and fruit. As for lazy I walk for 2 hours a day. I am happy as I am. I have a good job, eanr a good salary, have a good standard of living. I eat healthily, have a drink, and am overweight, and am not responsible for the starving in the world.
It doesn't seem so Robert, but my view is that EVERYONE should have their own opinions and I can see where your going with this conversation, within proportion.
I do not dislike you, I quite like your screen persona in interviews. I preferred David Ross as Kryten but then I felt Red Dwarf lost alot from season 3 on and that was not down to your inclusion but to the quality of the scripts. However I dislike your objectification of the overweight and the linking of them to hunger in the world which is largely caused by politicians and farm subsidies. Developing world should compete on a level playing field.
midlanholic. I feel for you mate. I do really, but you say your not responsible for the starving of the world. Aren't we all to blame? I also believe mr llew was not "personaly" attacking anyone but rather our one sidedness in relation to the way we look at life and those we share this life with. I hope you feel your life is a gift and not a punishment.
It seem's I've been blocked from messaging you Robert due to a message I sent, for this I appologize. You left me a very enlightening message in response that made me re-evaluate my position. Again I appologize as my message must have caused offence, hence the block. Take care Robert, and try not to get too drawn into YT's vid postings, cause there's some real oddballs out there, right Midianholic?
Bah, your a comedian as well as a commentary. Some of the best comedians have ripped the shit out of every subject going. Take Bill Hicks. Pizza Delivery Junior Boy... Thunk thunk thunk. Bill Hicks fans will know what this means.
Why should he apologise? if you want to be overweight, you can... if you dont want to be; you dont have to, its simple science... nothing is forcing you to be fat; most overweight people are just too lazy to work out or diet...
Just think about when your sitting around wasting precious money that could be used to help the needing, on fatty, expensive and unhealthy food.
Stop acting victimised... its childish; nothing is stopping you from getting a healthy lifestyle
I think it was just raw, unprocessed emotion Robert was expressing, not a properly formed opinion, and we've all done that before. We're only human - well, some of us :D
I don't blame any one person for being over weight, I don't even say that when I loose it. I say that there is something wrong with the situation in the world when some people are struggling with weight, and some don't have anything to eat. My sympathy is still with the people who are hungry. And I don't insult people directly, unlike your good self.
I am not after sympathy, I am perfectly happy as I am. However the problem of the underfed in the world is not attributable to me and others like me whatever you may want to say.
I could see where you came from when you posted the other video. You seemed pretty annoyed at things in general in your last video.
But to leave it up and then to admit the rights and wrongs of it like this is the right thing to do. You could easily have deleted it or re-edited, so, kudos.
I'm a very slim woman who's had a lifetime of rude remarks from large people and I'm bloody sick of it.Not once have I retorted out loud to the unsolicitored "Oh you're so thin!" with "Gee you're so fat!".
Don't feel bad!,smoke or don't,take drugs or not, over eat or have restraint and NEVER stuff your face whilst on the phone, that's disgusting.
to shecat42 and her reason for being overweight (genetically predisposed)how come in third world countries there arent any genetically predisposed overweight people. Just because most of your family are fat doesnt mean its in your genes it means that you looked at you fat parents stuffing their faces and larnt to do this yourself
Hi Robert, I saw the comment in the way I think you intended it and that is to show a comparison, albeit an extreme one, between us and the famine stricken parts of the world. There must be millions of people who can't get the minimum nutrition they need to survive yet many of us, myself included, eat when we're not even hungry. I feel you are right to apologise to those offended by the comment but equally justified in leaving the video up.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and freedom of speech, even if it is about being overweight, I work with people that eat at lunchtime what it takes me all day to eat, and then moan that they can't lose weight, and yes, I have pointed this out, but they are still very nice people.
I have been overweight most of my life. (I fall into the genetically predisposed category.) And, having had cruel and rude comments made both to my face and behind my back all my life, I was terribly disappointed by the comments that Robert made. I am still a fan, though, and will continue to be a subscriber, but I hope that's not how he truly feels towards people like me.
Also, to those of you who feel that overweight people are lazy, I DARE any of you to survive a typical day in my life.
I had a cousin who was also genetically predisposed, but after joining me in a trip to Thailand, she miraculously found a cure.
How come there are no genetically predisposed fat people in Africa? Or Souteast Asia?
Only Westerners are afflicted with this particular genetic anomaly?
I've travelled all over the world and been in some very harsh conditions. I've seen people survive on practically nothing, and people like you disgust me!
I do believe that a lot of people simply use this as an excuse. Kind of like a badge that says "it's not my fault" and allowing them to defend themselves when someone comments on them being greedy pigs. There was a program on recently (Dispatches I think) which pretty much dispelled this myth and gave DNA tests to people who thought they were genetically predisposed to being porkers - surprise surprise, they were all found to be normal. It just comes down to calories in vs calories out.
Well it looks like some fat...(there i said it...FAT!) people were offended and some weren't.Some people of average weight were offended and some weren't. What you gonna do? You can't please all the people all the time. Quite frankly I was offended by the fact that people were offended! Come on guys; offended that Bobby used "bad language" ? A word is just a word. It's the sentiments behind the word that are important. Bobby you spoke the truth; which is at times hard to face.
Its all very well making excuses, but when someone who is as popular and respected as this chap its just not the dumb thing to say stuff like this when you have so many fans, a book/s in the making and tv work on the go.
Whether or not the remarks reflected real feelings about overweight people or not, the reaction to it can hardly be surprising can it?
The purely ironical thing being, of course, that were you an American actor, your YouTube piece would be on every channel and discussed on every newsgroup. Believe me, thank the stars you live in the UK. Here they went so far as to broadcast a voicemail left by the wife of a school administrator on the phone of a student who had complained about not having a snow day. She was irate and angry, but completely right about her complaint...but it was on CNN, Fox News...everywhere. It's ridiculous.
Don't worry about it, my friend, I work with 2 large people, shall we say, who call me, the skinny bitch, just because I am a size 10, you can't tippy toe around everyone, like they are delicate little flowers, I thought the video was very funny, and so did lots of others, don't beat yourself up, you can't please everyone, all the time.
Good on you for keeping it on youtube we all make mistakes and if we have the opportunity and courage we apologise for them and grow. Rather then deleteing it and hoping no-one saw it making it just a secret of sorts for a few people.
I feel we should try are best to move away from that little policeman in our head that tells us not to say that or act in this way, this in turn means you can say somethings that can be inappropriate at worst insensitive from time to time we all have bad days.
I had no problems with the comments made in the last video and yes, I am overweight. I'm sick of everyone needing to qualify what they say if it's not 100% politically correct. This generation needs a thicker skin.
I totally agree and my take on it was not a dig towards people who have diseases who cant help being obese...it is about those of us that can get a burger not having gratitude for what we can have while others in the world are starving right now.
Takes a big man to apologize, especially to a video camera that can't give any hint of forgiveness [I'm not being sarcastic]. Good work Robert, and I think most people took your original point pretty well--we have the luxury of being obese (or anorexic, for that matter), while others are tragically impoverished. It isn't the obese folks' fault, per se, but the list of priorities for all of us in the West might need a bit of resorting.
I did not find the video in question particularly offensive (and I'm a colossaly fat bastard) coming from someone I have much respect for I just felt very dissapointed that Rob's point of view on a very important subject comes across as so narrow minded.
It takes a big man to apologise Rob, even if just to make us lardies feel a bit better.
I think your first messege was clear enough, fat people are fat through choice (no one is ever forced), where as starving people in poorer countries are not. Eating disorders are another barrel of fish.
It's up to people how offensively they take it. But noticing a problem is at least a step forward.
mitch: Overweight is the result of an overeating compulsion or even a genetic predisposition. It's a medical condition. Virtually no one wants to be fat. Don't blame the victim.
It's tough to decide how much sympathy to have for obesity. It's a lot more complicated than saying, "They're just lazy, why don't they eat better?" Obesity is often a combination of physical disadvantage (bad genes) and deep psychological weakness (harder to solve than simple "laziness").
BUT:
I think "fat acceptance" is a bad direction. It's our gut instinct to find obesity unattractive. It's certainly unhealthy. So we shouldn't pretend it's okay to be fat, just to save fat people's feelings
yourtaciturn: It's a medical condition. Is it okay to have cancer? It's the same idea. Compulsions are called compulsions because people are _compelled_.
yourtacit: If an overeating compulsion were something you could "cure" with "positive thinking and a change of lifestyle," you might have a point. You may have noticed the extreme difficulty people have, their condition ending up in, e.g., amputations from diabetes 2, etc. The only thing fairly guaranteed to have a reliable effect is surgery such as stomach stapling or banding. It's a serious medical condition.
Overeating compulsions are incredibly difficult to overcome, I agree. I am obese, and if it was easy, I would be slim by now.
Yet I absolutely know why people have no sympathy. To the outside world, people who eat Big Macs and whine, "It's not my fault, I have a disease!" sound like WEAK PEOPLE.
If you're defending obesity, you're stuck at the negative BOTTOM of the path to improvement. Like saying, "It's too hard, pass the Big Mac."
yourtac: well, I see better what you're getting at. I'm definitely not defending obesity. I think it makes more sense for people to look at like an addiction. On the other hand, the surgery remedy is very quickly becoming mainstream. But there is always some danger, so I dunno about that. But, as to yourself, I don't think you should be judging yourself harshly. But I see what you mean by how it sounds.
Sorry rob you have no reason to apologise. No one unless in a strange case of a disoder which would naturally make someone fat can ever and should ever whine and whinge if they are too fat. Everyone overweight can do something about it and should do, I have seen some vile videos on here about "proud fat people", all the while I am thinking of some poor fucker wasting away in the baking heat. Do these poor people who are not privvy to what anyone reading this comment right now are?
Do they have the same choices as us? I highly doubt it. I am glad you are leaving your last piece un-edited, we need more people to voice their true opinions, so please dont be sorry.
AICabal: As to your comment, compulsive overeating is an addiction just like any other addiction. It's a medical problem, one that is difficult to treat. Surgery (stomach stapling or some variant) has been shown to be effective, but it's very expensive.
2: Obese people can can of course change their behaviour, but it would be better to help them in an understanding way rather than go on the attack so that we feel better about ourselves, and no doubt to distract us from our own faults.
I'd like to point out that I happen not to be overweight myself.
1:Aside from the points about genetic predisposition and the expense (in both time and money) associated with a healthy diet, which are valid, there are psychological aspects. The most well-known is comfort eating, a product of parental habits and depression. It can also be a method of self-sabotage which happens to be convenient in the developed world. If less food were available, they would simply find another way.
The irony of your rant is that ethnic groups from regions historically prone to famine tend to become "obese" much more readily when food supplies stabilize. On top of which malnutrition during pregnancy predisposes the fetus to obesity in later life too. So many "fat fucks" are likely to be that way *because of* food shortages.
It's one reason why many non-white groups have higher rates of obesity. It's not just poverty - they react differently to a Western diet.
Obesity is a very iffy issue.. It was good that you apologised but it is true. Can't skirt around anymore to protect feelings. Im 19 and between 8-10st overweight, norm 10st. I agree that theres many people that have issues with food. I wish i wasn't this size. I'd love to have normal friends and a boyfriend. Not people who don't really like to see me be around them or talk to. Im not making excuses, just my point of view. But people need to get up off their backsides and do something about it.
That's pretty much where I stand. I've noticed that often the people who get most irate about being called lazy for being overweight are upset because they hate having a mirror held up to their face.
I was obese a few years ago, and that was my fault. Sure, I'd been sexually assaulted, but I was the one sitting on the couch eating fast food all day.
Part of accepting your body for what it is is accepting responsibility for your actions. Genetics plays a role, but not as much as gluttony does.
Good for you for apologising, didnt see the other video yet but either way, it takes guts to say sorry sometimes and I hold an immense amount of respect for people who do.
P.S hmm, just noticed, YouTube spell checks apologise as incorrect because I didnt spell it the american way...grrrrrrr
Actually I agree with your comments. I hate it when fat people blame their problem on a condition. There are tons of conditions and addictions and people get help. Fat people can't help themselves because of the one thing that got them into that state: Laziness. This coming from a student that has put on 2 stone in a year due laziness (and fried chicken and pizza, ha). On my most last shop I have however only purchased fruit, vegetables and pasta. Time to get stop before it's too late!
I'm not fat but seriously, with respect, you don't know what you're talking about mate. I know some really heavy people who ARE like that because of a condition, its to do with how the body matabolizes food. One of them does a damn site more work than I do and certainly isnt lazy.
I am aware that there are conditions that effect weight, and that some people do all that they can. I was generally talking to the vast majority that use such things as excuses, but mostly people who say the likes of "I have an addiction, if I don't eat McDonalds I get agitated". Bollocks.
Robert should find a recording of the last series of Royal Institute Christmas Lectures on genetics. Many people are obese because they eat too much, others eat minimally and gain weight! Sometimes it's genetic. Believe it.
Nice apology, but the damage is done and for an intelligent bloke - who, from what I've seen, I quite like, you surprised and genuinely disappointed me. I expected better of you.
P.S. I'm not fat, but I know someone who is, and who falls into the "genetic" category.
I couldn't agree more. I have a friend who is and has been obese throughout his life, through no fault of his own (health conditions, disability and genetics). He's had to live with that stigma all of his life, had a horrible childhood of being victimized and now has very limited opportunities.
People need to remember that they could have very easily been born this way too, before they start wagging fingers and spouting abuse.
my mom was given steriods as a result of being on chemo therapy . her weight ballooned . she could hardly eat . food was not her problem drugs were . thankfully she survied and once she was taken off the steriods her weight returned to normal .
I'm glad to hear everything turned out ok. It's not people like that that bother me though, nor I'm sure Robert. It's people who are fat because they stuff their faces with junk and use words like "addiction" as some sort of valid excuse for not seeking help, or helping themselves.
comment part one :i have to say i am large myself but i am more then aware i am to blame for my own problems . i have never blamed anyone else. it is the stereo types i hate. not all fat people have rhew same problems . for example you would never catch me eating in places like mc donalds . my main problem was the worse i felt about myself the more i would comfort eat .
comment part 2 : thats my fault , my bad choice . it is not an easy habit to break for me but i am trying . i find that the better about myself i feel the more i want to loose weight . i am not trying to say this is how it is for all fat people thats just how it is for me
last part of my comment :ever since i have been small i have been getting comments about my size . it is not pleasant i am well used to it now though . that why i was more then a bit dissapointed with roberts comments . also it reminded me of times in the past i would rather forget when people have been attacking me pretty badly . i blame them for thier comment but only i made myself fat .
Thanks for apologizing (although it wasn't THAT heinous a crime), i am overweight and suffer from compulsive overeating disorder (basically food addiction, if i don't eat i start pacing and getting agitated), i'm not making excuses and i know that i have a will of not so much steel as jelly. It's nice to have somebody recognize that fat people aren't single handedly depriving Africa of food. (I hope to work with medicines sans frontiers when i'm old enough)
Sometimes, even if you're right it's best to bite your tongue and not say some stuff.. Even if you're absolutely, completely, 100% right. You're doing more than 99% of the population by even thinking about this subject so don't worry about it too much.
I'm an ex-fatty myself and yet I found your fat comments very amusing indeed and I take responsibility for my "condition" as it were. I lost the weight, and have just about managed to keep it off since and again I can take responsibility so i'm a lot happier. It's possible, but it's bloody hard.
I thought you were right the first time... fat people are responsible for the state of their body... its due to sense indulgent over eating. Its actually cheaper to eat fruit and vegetables (buy what's in season)than packaged/convenience food. I am fat myself, by the way, and I don't care about starving africans. If their governments spent more time/effort/money farming instead of fighting or stealing money then they wouldn't be in this state.
Good points well made. It's not about sending food and money to Africa in my opinion. I feel such charities mean well but with such corrupt governments in charge (Mugabe, anybody?) how can such aid get to the people?
I'm overweight myself and been subject to bullying in the past because of it, so I'm glad to be reassured that you're not one of those cruel people. Having said that, I agree with many of your points, and that overweight people should take responsibility for their condition, not moan to others about it. Even so, it's sadly all too easy in this country for people to fall into the trap of eating cheap but unhealthy foods, and living lazily. I'm doing something about my weight, though. :-)
I watched the vid in question yesterday, and, being overweight myself, your rant did strike something in me. I wasn't offended - far from it. Rather, I found myself agreeing, and I must admit I felt rather guilty. At the same time, I couldn't help thinking 'yes, but it's more complicated than that, isn't it?' Which is basically what you're saying here. Made my afternoon.
fair enough, but still none of us are making an issue or ranting about poverty. i do think food today is poisoned, we've never had an obesity problem before. but we are also really lazy when it comes to healthy food. we'd rather watch tv or play video games for an hour and eat ready made meals, than to take time and cook from fresh.
Exactly. It's not entirely the fault of the person who is overweight but they do have a choice about what they can eat whereas people who are malnourished don't. There's a choice, think about it.
Don't worry about it, Rob. You spoke your mind and the fact that you've not taken down the video in apology means something. Good on you, mate. :)
don't worry about it mate, your a good bloke and like many of us are pissed of with this insane world. Gordon brown is meeting the republican warmonger John McCain, who made the comment a few weeks ago "I hate gooks". So if we are going by what labour accepts morally your comment was extremely kind lol.
Takes a big man to admit he's wrong. You were at the time expressing your own opinion in your own vid here on YouTube. But they say 'sticks and stones break bones but names never hurt' and we all know emotional hurts are just as bad. Apology accepted from someone who just crept into the red for my height and is now blaming inactivity watching vids (well that and portion control). Cheers, Lesley
I have not read the comments from your last video...but I did watch it. A thought..... a sci-fi book about a planet with two countries..one contains 50% of the population, and they are starving. The other country has all the food they could want...and the leading causes of death is resulting from over eating (eating them selves to death)...Would you think this was odd or far fetched?
Hi Robert , i didint watch the video your refering too , but , if i did , then i curtainly would forgive you anyway , im not fat offcourse , im very well built for a 19 year male , but if i was fat shall we say then i would forgive you indeed , after all , you make me laugh wither your yourself or as Kryten in Red Dwarf , oh yeah , Red Dwarf in 20 years old this month aint it ! cool ! .
One of the nices bit of abject grovling i've ever come across, if of course we ignore little things like the check out woman won't be watching ....... how do you know this ? Is this a prisumption to add to your collection of presumptions.......hay, but there for the grace of god, i would suggest go us all !!!!

@20 I was a size 10. @ 25 a 6. @ 35 a 16.
I'd say about 95% my fault (depression & meds that go with do factor in to this).
Some truly are genetically predisposed.
Some can't afford to 'eat right.' here fruit & veg are expensive.
Cultural norms (ie McDonalds vs traditional meals in, oh say Asia) are also factors.

EddieTheFishReturns 2 years ago
fat people are given a bad time and like all of us they can make a serious and worthile contribution to society.they should all be taken to africa and let the natives there boil and eat the fuckers and that in itself would solve the african problem.and at christmas as a special treat send dawn french and lenny henry, fuck me ,they would have some left over for next christmas if they had freezers, but that seems unlikely as a lot of them dont even have houses.maybe not such a good idea.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paracetamoljunkie 2 years ago
II know that my friends who are naturally slim can eat pretty much what they like, and only exercise occasionally but stay slim. I on the other hand have to count calories, fat levels, exercise, never eat chocloate, sweets, crisps, chips etc (all food that my friends can eat regularly), just to MAINTAIN my weight. How quickly would you people whine if they had to have the same lifestyle as myself. Yes, i can and did put it right but i didnt choose to have to work much harder to keep it off.
Paracetamoljunkie 2 years ago
As a semi-overweight teenager, I don't think you meant any true offense. I agree with you that obesity is a problem, especially in the USA (where I live).
However, I think I can state from what I've seen that you are a generally nice and polite man, and I am sure that on an individual level you'd never mean to upset any heavier-set person with your opinions.
Your rant AND your apology prove your human-ness. Thank you for sharing both sides with us all.

Its not a case of the obese people eating all of the food, while the starving have none.
Its that the obese people are eating lots of the wrong food.
Show a starving Ethipian a chocolate eclair, with whipped cream on the top, and they'd probably choose to remain hungry.
I know I would. p.s Love your work on Scrapheap.

takes a big man to speak honestly and an even bigger man to admit when he's wrong.

First of all, Robert, with the entire series of Scrapheap Challenge ABC2 is playing all at once here in Aus, I've come to really admire and respect you.
KangarooGirlie 3 years ago
Well, I think most people do something like that. They feel pissed off, so they post a rant publicly on the internet. Then somebody takes offence, and sends an 'irate' message, as you put it. You then feel like shit, and either take the offending article down or post an apology.
So anyways... Don't worry about it =3

Whether or not the remarks reflected real feelings about overweight people or not, the reaction to it can hardly be surprising can it?
richandnik 4 years ago
The purely ironical thing being, of course, that were you an American actor, your YouTube piece would be on every channel and discussed on every newsgroup. Believe me, thank the stars you live in the UK. Here they went so far as to broadcast a voicemail left by the wife of a school administrator on the phone of a student who had complained about not having a snow day. She was irate and angry, but completely right about her complaint...but it was on CNN, Fox News...everywhere. It's ridiculous.

I think your first messege was clear enough, fat people are fat through choice (no one is ever forced), where as starving people in poorer countries are not. Eating disorders are another barrel of fish.

YourTaciturnFriend 4 years ago
yourtaciturn: It's a medical condition. Is it okay to have cancer? It's the same idea. Compulsions are called compulsions because people are _compelled_.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
If cancer was something you could cure with positive thinking and a change of lifestyle, your comparison would be applicable.
YourTaciturnFriend 4 years ago
yourtacit: If an overeating compulsion were something you could "cure" with "positive thinking and a change of lifestyle," you might have a point. You may have noticed the extreme difficulty people have, their condition ending up in, e.g., amputations from diabetes 2, etc. The only thing fairly guaranteed to have a reliable effect is surgery such as stomach stapling or banding. It's a serious medical condition.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
Overeating compulsions are incredibly difficult to overcome, I agree. I am obese, and if it was easy, I would be slim by now.
Yet I absolutely know why people have no sympathy. To the outside world, people who eat Big Macs and whine, "It's not my fault, I have a disease!" sound like WEAK PEOPLE.
If you're defending obesity, you're stuck at the negative BOTTOM of the path to improvement. Like saying, "It's too hard, pass the Big Mac."
YourTaciturnFriend 4 years ago
yourtac: well, I see better what you're getting at.

Do these poor people who are not privvy to what anyone reading this comment right now are?

Do they have the same choices as us? I highly doubt it. I am glad you are leaving your last piece un-edited, we need more people to voice their true opinions, so please dont be sorry.
AICabal 4 years ago
AICabal: As to your comment, compulsive overeating is an addiction just like any other addiction. It's a medical problem, one that is difficult to treat. Surgery (stomach stapling or some variant) has been shown to be effective, but it's very expensive.
nicholas9999 4 years ago
2: Obese people can can of course change their behaviour, but it would be better to help them in an understanding way rather than go on the attack so that we feel better about ourselves, and no doubt to distract us from our own faults.
I'd like to point out that I happen not to be overweight myself.
n14e5o15 4 years ago
1:Aside from the points about genetic predisposition and the expense (in both time and money) associated with a healthy diet, which are valid, there are psychological aspects. The most well-known is comfort eating, a product of parental habits and depression. It can also be a method of self-sabotage which happens to be convenient in the developed world. If less food were available, they would simply find another way.
n14e5o15 4 years ago 2
The irony of your rant is that ethnic groups from regions historically prone to famine tend to become "obese" much more readily when food supplies stabilize. On top of which malnutrition during pregnancy predisposes the fetus to obesity in later life too. So many "fat fucks" are likely to be that way *because of* food shortages.
It's one reason why many non-white groups have higher rates of obesity. It's not just poverty - they react differently to a Western diet.

InaudibleWhisper 4 years ago
I'm not fat but seriously, with respect, you don't know what you're talking about mate. I know some really heavy people who ARE like that because of a condition, its to do with how the body matabolizes food. One of them does a damn site more work than I do and certainly isnt lazy.
Trellium 4 years ago 2
I am aware that there are conditions that effect weight, and that some people do all that they can. I was generally talking to the vast majority that use such things as excuses, but mostly people who say the likes of "I have an addiction, if I don't eat McDonalds I get agitated". Bollocks.
InaudibleWhisper 4 years ago

Robert should find a recording of the last series of Royal Institute Christmas Lectures on genetics. Many people are obese because they eat too much, others eat minimally and gain weight! Sometimes it's genetic. Believe it.
Nice apology, but the damage is done and for an intelligent bloke - who, from what I've seen, I quite like, you surprised and genuinely disappointed me. I expected better of you.
P.S. I'm not fat, but I know someone who is, and who falls into the "genetic" category.
OldVideoPro 4 years ago
I couldn't agree more. I have a friend who is and has been obese throughout his life, through no fault of his own (health conditions, disability and genetics). He's had to live with that stigma all of his life, had a horrible childhood of being victimized and now has very limited opportunities.
People need to remember that they could have very easily been born this way too, before they start wagging fingers and spouting abuse.

comment part one :i have to say i am large myself but i am more then aware i am to blame for my own problems . i have never blamed anyone else. it is the stereo types i hate. not all fat people have rhew same problems . for example you would never catch me eating in places like mc donalds . my main problem was the worse i felt about myself the more i would comfort eat .

comment part 2 : thats my fault , my bad choice . it is not an easy habit to break for me but i am trying . i find that the better about myself i feel the more i want to loose weight . i am not trying to say this is how it is for all fat people thats just how it is for me

I think it comes down to this- don't insult those bloated physically for being greedy when you might be bloated financially.

'its political correctness gone mad' lol
dont let offended people put you off saying what you think, that's why your videos are interesting

FUCK POLITENESS AND DECENCY

Whilst I would defend any obese person's right to eat as much as they want and blame it on whomever they please, what you said was dead on.
Though I dont know if "fat fuck" is in my vocab!

I really respect people that can just put their hands up and admit they were wrong. Good for you :)

I thought your comments were quite fair in relation to the subject.

no need to apologise I admit to being alittle over-weight and I wasn't bothered at all
Munchlax2982 4 years ago 2
Apology accepted, but the apology wasn't needed really. I'm glad you did apologise and it shows you being a respectable person.

it was of the moment, you made a valid point-stay cool-ive been over weight and was a lazy useless bastard-dont beat yourself up over your feelings!

I understood that you weren't having a go at fat people, I thought you were commenting on the imbalance of obese people and starving people.
It's cool that you haven't taken the video down and kept it up to face the consequences.
Nice!

This made me happy.
Thank you! :)

fair enough, but still none of us are making an issue or ranting about poverty. i do think food today is poisoned, we've never had an obesity problem before. but we are also really lazy when it comes to healthy food. we'd rather watch tv or play video games for an hour and eat ready made meals, than to take time and cook from fresh.
aliciafuentes 4 years ago
Thank you. That was the sweetest thing I have ever seen! I'm especially glad that you don't really hate fat people. :)

Dont apologise, they should send all there extra food to africa!
Zimpaz 4 years ago 3

I just thought it was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen on YouTube. Oh well...
ScarranHalfBreed 4 years ago 2
don't worry about it mate, your a good bloke and like many of us are pissed of with this insane world. Gordon brown is meeting the republican warmonger John McCain, who made the comment a few weeks ago "I hate gooks". So if we are going by what labour accepts morally your comment was extremely kind lol.

I am a fat person and personally I wasn't offended, in fact I agreed with what you said. Loved the last video, as always, keep up the work!

I saw your Vid, and expected you'd get some negative response- despite the fact that I agreed with some of what you said.

As a matter of interest was it a 'Fat F*ck' who complained? ... silly question...

u hav ur opinion, they hav theirs. it's good that u apologised tho.
i get comments from people tellin me to kill myself, but i cnt apoloigse for being alive lol!
