the only racism i see here are the people commenting that say that this is racist. If you find racism in something that was never intending to be racist, YOU are the one that needs to get your mind out of the gutter. If you show this to a child, they'd never see anything bad about it unless they are taught to think that way by someone who focuses on race (something that shouldn't matter).
@katagirl3000 I think that was the point, that is why they call it subtle(though not very),you are right about the fact that a child watching this would not turn to you and say,"hey this is subtle racism ma,I am not watching this!"but the stereotype is reinforced never the less. You act as though Disney can in no way be racist,do you know the history of the man?
@katagirl3000 panzercat39 is right you know. The racial stereotype is shown significantly and this was in the early 1940s when America openly racist and very segregated.
@rich763690 when crows are making trumpet noises and saying "I be dun seen" "We's" and "Dat" it can be seen as a negative stereotype against african-americans.
@whateverman181 it was NOT to make fun of them. In fact, the point is for the audience to like the crows. They're not any different than when Disney portrayed the lower class accents of the british vultures in dumbo.
@37SuperBrandon That wasn't my point but okay. Being a lesbian didnt have anything to do with my reaction. Nubian... Yeah, I said my bit. I'm out of here. Good Lord, your generation is odd.
I understand why they considered racist but I love it a lot it was smart, cute and I felt like i watched my long lost relatives lol Oh yeah me and the lead crow just got married lol I'm a weird black girl but they just so damn adorable besides Dumbo my 5th husbabd after Donald and Tweety. XD
I knew the Crows were black since i was yay high i loved it and the only reason they considered it offensive 'cause it pointed out actual common behavior of African Americans in the south and as you here in the beginnig of the song as Jimmy sings the title of the song the voice of another calls him Boy. Back then thats what black males were often referred too and the crow itself was just a bonus image because its black and you know blacks come out dark skin (Smart). Oh yeah and his name Jim Crow
The hell is so racist here? The crows were MY favorite characters. They were cool, fun, witty, energetic, just crazy awesome. My absolute favorite part of the movie.
Crows are biologically black. So what? Storks are biologically white. Do you all want to get racist on that? So overly sensitive. People who get all worked up and blow things way out of proportion only enable this racism. In the end, holding on and being ridiculously angry about it only makes it worse for you and sets you back.
@pukakalain When they declared that this was it was a looooong time ago baby and they had every right be upset lol because this country was hell of racist back then.well it still is now but atleast we kind of have our equality straight now we need to learn about how we can keep the peace and tolerence.
@37SuperBrandon I understand that then, but I'm talking about now. How this video is being regarded (by some elsewhere on the internet) as racist. Back then yes, but now there shouldn't be any stupid controversy about it in all those Disney conspiracy movies.
@pukakalain Oh, well aint nobody really complaining about it now that's just something people are just rebuilding from the past to let others know that it was actually racist that's just an issue that's never going to die. lol and yes honey child i called ya baby don't worry i'm not a lesbian im a 17 year old girl who even grown men treat me like a nubian queen.
@panzercat39 Umm don't let the username fool you my whole name is Brandonette and I have a younger brother name Brandon and we're both named after our biolgical dad. I just like to call myself Brandon because my name basically is Brandon but in female form. Just like Juanita, Chrisette, Christina, Derricka, Brandy, Erika and etc each of these names has a male counterpart and me and Brandy share the same one.
@pukakalain Don't be daft, the crows are an obvious racist stereo-type of black people(they even sing the best song in the movie,as it is well known fact that black people have more musical talent than everyone else, see even that semi compliment is racist).
everyone think for a moment black people had just gained true freedom at the point when this movie was made and in the 1940s white man was still quite sore about it so this would have been an improvement at the time the crows are witty resourceful and know about complex concepts like the placebo effect so tell me after hearing these facts were they racist? (a typical racist black scene would be retard hour and slave labor so yeah completely different from that which is seen here)
@makutateridax200 No. They black people got true freedom almost 30 years later, in the mid-late 60's. The 40's was full of people who were still very racist towards blacks (and everyone else), and sexist (But that's a whole other story).
Incidentally, didn't they have slave labor early on in Dumbo (We work all day, we work all night, we never learn, to read or write).
Either way. I like them. It's like Speedy Gonzales and Pepe LePew, they're racist, but their entertaining.
@MusaMansu what i meant was freedom from slave labor but i do accept that criticism and agree that black people got complete freedom in the more technical side of things during the 60s
@makutateridax200 Well, if we're talking about freedom from slavery, that happened about 80 years before Dumbo.
Anyways, I think people are to sensitive about these things. This was made in the early 40's. around 70 years ago. It was a different time. These characters are apart of my childhood, probably your childhood, and most others. And these crows were funny.XD
First off, Yes they are suppose to black people of the era. They have the clothes and speak jive. Those clothes and style were popular among blacks during the era. Was it popular for ALL? No. Just among the street wise, younger generation. This leads us to point 2. Is it racist? No. This isn't a depiction for all, just the young cool teenagers/young adults, since THAT'S who they represent.
Despite all this racial stuff, are those crows still awesome? FUCK YES INDEED. They are badasses.
Man, I'm black and I was never offended by this. Hell I just thought the crows were cool, smooth talkers, the best secondary characters. only part, I don't like is them being called boys but eh.
I guess we have to look at this from the context of the times, the 1930's and 40's, before integration and before civil rights movement. No doubt the crows are based on black stereotypes, but they are not portrayed negatively, on the contrary, they are portrayed as wise, kindhearted and sympathetic to Dumbo's suffering, albeit a bit jokesters... I love this movie, one of the Disney's best, simple and charming....
@zonilo1 I'm not denying anything, I'm just saying when I see this movie and get to this scene, I don't see African American stereotypes, I see cartoon crows that end up helping Dumbo build up some confidence.
why do people say this is racist?? im sure walt disney didn't force black actors to do their voices. and what about the black crows in the wiz?? now i could see if the actors were there at gun point. and besides the mouse sounds like a jew from brooklyn, its entertaining people!!
@natureboy19831 He kinda did. Learn your Disney history. Walt D. an outspoked anti-semite as well as a racist esp. towards afro-americans. This is well documented.
I grew up watching this, and No, it never occurred to me that the crows were 'black' (i mean, all crows's feathers are black, but that's because they're crows-- it's biology or something like that...), as Japanesebanzai52 said, i thought of them as cool singing, talented, witty and actually rather smart crows. In fact, before I even came onto youtube to watch clips (i lost the video cassete) it never crossed my mind that people would take it as offensive.
How is this Racist, its not a negative stereotype, there is obviously a very valid reason that racism espeically towards blacks is a very sensitive subject. However people are to sensitive and will try and twist a meaning and make it racist. The fact is if they were to make a film today that made balck crows talk street would that be racist? No its part of our modern culture and black peple should be proud of it.When a charecter is made to look & sound very british to people have trhe smae reaction?
@TheRatchetkid The point im trying to make is when a stereotypical british charecter is played on american television I don't get offended,I understand we're not all like that + i understand stereotypes aren't a good thing but some people are "stereotypically british" I know its a more serious topic with racism towards black culture but all im saying is just because these birds charecters resemble a stereotype doesnt mean people should take it as racist as some people are probably like that
@Japanesebanzai52 as did I (i saw this sometime in the 90s) but we also have to remember that this movie was made in a different time (40s) when there wasn't much of anything black in movies so for there to be something literally black most of the time it was a discreet way to add black people in the movie, usually to make fun of them
@Japanesebanzai52 me too. I didnt think this was racist. In fact next to the Pink Elephants On Parade part of the film, the crows was my favorite part of the film, i liked their style. I even named one of my first rock bands after them, "The Black Crows".
@cujo55544 the name of the head crow is jim crow.... look up jim crow laws and it will show you exactly how this is racist, so basically this isnt a "step in the right direction"
@babydragoon22333 Upon reflection, I think you're right. When I originally made that comment, I don't mind admitting, I was very uneducated about racism and privilege. I've been educating myself more about these things lately.
Best characters in the whole movie. Never even realized they were supposed to be black when I watched this as a kid. Not only are they interesting characters, they take pity on Dumbo and help him gain self-confidence when everyone else save for Timothy puts him down or makes fun of him.
I dare anyone to watch this clip and then watch the Bugs Bunny cartoon "All This and Rabbit Stew" and tell me the crows are negative stereotypes.
I don't think that this is necessarily supposed to be racist, but rather this was the way that southerners (and even into the north) in general talked during the time period. In my opinion, it's more racist to say that these crows are supposed to represent African Americans based on the way they talk. Yes, they were played by black actors, but a lot of white people spoke the same way.
Back to the racism, Disney hired black voice actors to voice the Crows, which was more than Taboo at the time. And besides, the crows were good guys in this movie.
I feel I should say something about the man who animated the crows:
His name was Walt Kelly, and after Dumbo he created the comic strip 'Pogo.' He used the strip to comment on social issues in the 50s, including race and segregation. He used his talent to openly criticize racism and segregation in public institutions.
Just something people might like to keep in mind viewing this clip.
@marmik961 Not expicit racism. But it's very stereotypical towards african-americans. And those who don't see that are ignorant. I'm from Sweden where only a small part of the poulation are of african decent but I know that this clip is hugley stereotypical.
@mandisgoj I don't really see them do anything bad they do cause some black people do act like that and even then it's not a bad sterotype because these guys are really fun to watch they've got style, class, a senses of humor, intellegence, and good singing voices.
and btw, these crows are my favorite characters in this whole movie, and not because i'm one of these mindless guilty white liberals, but because I love the way they put the mouse in his place and the way they are willing to help Dumbo out, and btw also, they never once make fun of dumbo, no matter what the mouse's speech says, all the making fun is directed at the mouse, NOT DUMBO
and besides, i'm not gonna get in to this any further because i'm not going to be part of the stupid arguments that youtube has become, that's all youtube has become, one big giant stupid argument that no one would have the guts to argue with the people they are arguing with in real life
@RandomAccessMemory63 I meant the scene with the black workers and no faces...stuff like that, and replace it with nicer stuff so its still an hour long
Why is an accurate portrayal of some black people considered racist? Does the truth hurt? It shouldn't, because there's nothing hateful about this cartoon. The crows are lovable characters. If you hate them, or the people they may represent, that's your issue. It's not mine.
@Audiman001 Sorry dude, but the Republicans were the liberals of the 19th century. As of today the position is switched. Democrats used to be conservative, and Republicans used to be liberals.
I have a simple test for whether something is racist or not. does it make black people feel victimized? then it's racist, whether or not white people find it offensive.
Ahhh The "Guilty White Liberals" are at their "Politically Corrrect" bullshit again. A cartoon is a series of drawings morons, and if you feel so Guilty about being white, paint your faces black, and get your honkey asses kicked
I can't really call the crows racist. Look how they're portrayed- they're some of the few characters in the movie who take sympathy on Dumbo and try to help him. They're portrayed as relatively smart and witty and colorful, not as dumb and naive like most blacks were portrayed at the time.
Besides, there was a time when overly black characters themselves were banned from movies and media, being seen as unfit to share the screen with white actors. This was a step in the right direction.
@cujo55544 They're a bit like Sam from Casablanca. They're still stereotypes, but they're a bit more like "product of they're time" stereotypes as opposed genuinely reprehensible stock characters.
Even after all these years of watching this, I still don't think the crows are that racist. I know they're supposed to represent African Americans, but I still don't see why everyone got their panties in a bunch. All they do is sit around, talk, make fun of Dumbo, then end up apologizing and helping him.
The leader is called Jim Crow so i guess it is kinda racist. But honestly I loved the crows when i was a kid. I didn't even associate them with African Americans until I was older and told that they were supposed to be African American stereotypes. The vultures in the Jungle book make fun of the beatles. I don't know these birds are just hard core and awesome.
NOW we can see the racism & discuss. But in a way this film is historical in SHOWING how much we've changed. That being said, this was made in the 1930s a time where this depiction wasn't out of the norm. I DO find it ironic that one of the most memorable songs and scenes comes from the crows. Without the crows Dumbo would never have flown. I DOUBT most children saw this and thought, "Hey they're like black people!" I know I didn't see it that way when I was a child. Crows are crows
I wish people would STOP bitching about Disney "racism". They're REACHING! The crows are probably the best characters (next to Timothy); their song rocks! Disney has produced possibly the greatest films in history (but nothing touches "the wizard of oz"!); children will still be watching these when we're all old and moldy, if we keep the tradition alive and stop coming up with reasons to have them censored. These people should ask themselves, "is that what I REALLY want???"

Damn, kind of embarassed to see my comment voted so high.
To everyone who gave it the thumbs up: Sorry but I was wrong. It may be entertaining, but it's still racist.

When I was younger, I never saw them as black, I saw them as cool, singing and dancing crows
Japanesebanzai52 4 months ago 87
@Japanesebanzai52 as did I (i saw this sometime in the 90s) but we also have to remember that this movie was made in a different time (40s) when there wasn't much of anything black in movies so for there to be something literally black most of the time it was a discreet way to add black people in the movie, usually to make fun of them
jesster816 2 months ago
@Japanesebanzai52 me too. I didnt think this was racist. In fact next to the Pink Elephants On Parade part of the film, the crows was my favorite part of the film, i liked their style. I even named one of my first rock bands after them, "The Black Crows".

babydragoon22333 4 months ago
@babydragoon22333 Upon reflection, I think you're right. When I originally made that comment, I don't mind admitting, I was very uneducated about racism and privilege. I've been educating myself more about these things lately.
So yeah, I was wrong.

Best characters in the whole movie. Never even realized they were supposed to be black when I watched this as a kid. Not only are they interesting characters, they take pity on Dumbo and help him gain self-confidence when everyone else save for Timothy puts him down or makes fun of him.
I dare anyone to watch this clip and then watch the Bugs Bunny cartoon "All This and Rabbit Stew" and tell me the crows are negative stereotypes.

extremeroe17 4 months ago
I don't think that this is necessarily supposed to be racist, but rather this was the way that southerners (and even into the north) in general talked during the time period. In my opinion, it's more racist to say that these crows are supposed to represent African Americans based on the way they talk. Yes, they were played by black actors, but a lot of white people spoke the same way.
weepalone 4 months ago
Back to the racism, Disney hired black voice actors to voice the Crows, which was more than Taboo at the time. And besides, the crows were good guys in this movie.
CheckAnon 4 months ago 2
I feel I should say something about the man who animated the crows:
His name was Walt Kelly, and after Dumbo he created the comic strip 'Pogo.' He used the strip to comment on social issues in the 50s, including race and segregation. He used his talent to openly criticize racism and segregation in public institutions.
Just something people might like to keep in mind viewing this clip.
WillScarlet16 5 months ago 22
@WillScarlet16 the animator is just doing his job. The racist writers are the ones you need to be worried about.
TheCyShow 2 months ago
@TheCyShow What exactly about the crows is racist?
marmik961 2 months ago
@marmik961 Not expicit racism. But it's very stereotypical towards african-americans. And those who don't see that are ignorant. I'm from Sweden where only a small part of the poulation are of african decent but I know that this clip is hugley stereotypical.
mandisgoj 2 months ago
@marmik961 everything. From the way they talk to the way they act and moves.
mandisgoj 2 months ago
@mandisgoj I don't really see them do anything bad they do cause some black people do act like that and even then it's not a bad sterotype because these guys are really fun to watch they've got style, class, a senses of humor, intellegence, and good singing voices.
marmik961 2 months ago
@marmik961 A positive stereotype is still a stereotype. Not so fun to be mariginalized in to
a few"trademarks" or "ways" to define a whole culture.
mandisgoj 2 months ago
@mandisgoj True but their not trying to define a whole culture and at the end of the day I don't see anything stereotype about them.

and btw, these crows are my favorite characters in this whole movie, and not because i'm one of these mindless guilty white liberals, but because I love the way they put the mouse in his place and the way they are willing to help Dumbo out, and btw also, they never once make fun of dumbo, no matter what the mouse's speech says, all the making fun is directed at the mouse, NOT DUMBO

babymoondancer 5 months ago
Why is an accurate portrayal of some black people considered racist? Does the truth hurt? It shouldn't, because there's nothing hateful about this cartoon. The crows are lovable characters. If you hate them, or the people they may represent, that's your issue. It's not mine.

You know, it was liberals who were pro-slavery in the 1800's, and it was also liberals who were pro-segregation in the early to mid-1900's.
Then, in the late 1900's, the liberals began their "political-correctness" campaign (propaganda) in effort to "redeem themselves."
Audiman001 5 months ago
@Audiman001 Sorry dude, but the Republicans were the liberals of the 19th century. As of today the position is switched. Democrats used to be conservative, and Republicans used to be liberals.

I have a simple test for whether something is racist or not. does it make black people feel victimized? then it's racist, whether or not white people find it offensive.
Singabus66 5 months ago
Ahhh The "Guilty White Liberals" are at their "Politically Corrrect" bullshit again. A cartoon is a series of drawings morons, and if you feel so Guilty about being white, paint your faces black, and get your honkey asses kicked

HUW1097 6 months ago
I can't really call the crows racist. Look how they're portrayed- they're some of the few characters in the movie who take sympathy on Dumbo and try to help him. They're portrayed as relatively smart and witty and colorful, not as dumb and naive like most blacks were portrayed at the time.
Besides, there was a time when overly black characters themselves were banned from movies and media, being seen as unfit to share the screen with white actors. This was a step in the right direction.
cujo55544 6 months ago 39
@cujo55544 Agreed; I think they were simply portrayed as most black people were seen by those who didn't discriminate against them.

@cujo55544 They're a bit like Sam from Casablanca. They're still stereotypes, but they're a bit more like "product of they're time" stereotypes as opposed genuinely reprehensible stock characters.
KilldozerRocks 3 months ago
@cujo55544 That said, the "Jim Crow" pun is still pretty tasteless.
KilldozerRocks 3 months ago

Crows are crows
conallen1 8 months ago
@conallen1 CORRECTION - it was made in 1941
conallen1 8 months ago
I wish people would STOP bitching about Disney "racism". They're REACHING! The crows are probably the best characters (next to Timothy); their song rocks! Disney has produced possibly the greatest films in history (but nothing touches "the wizard of oz"!); children will still be watching these when we're all old and moldy, if we keep the tradition alive and stop coming up with reasons to have them censored. These people should ask themselves, "is that what I REALLY want???"
