More pixels don't offer better quality images. It offers more versatility. Less megapixels means less information to work with in post processing and less flexibility for cropping. In a perfect world every shot would be perfectly framed and nobody would ever post process an image and cropping would be something you do in a corn field. The reality is, more megapixels results in more usable shots.

You buy a low end bmw and a high end bmw, there is difference between not only in engines power but also better quality. It up to the consumers to pay for the quality they want. Xlay16 has a point actually. And we all know that all the brands just charge an extra for their Pro lines of products. What he is trying to say is that this camera maybe is 2 or 3 times better in some areas of the overall product (because a camera is not just the sensor size and sensitivity of it)...but that don´t explain why cost 5x other products. I mean...for me also is kind of weird and difficult to just accept that with the money you use to get a d3s you can buy 4 d7000 or something.

@JUANREVI But that is the problem with high end products. A D3100 is probably the best performance/price effective camera on the market, but if you want a better camera the differences will become smaller and smaller, but the price will still climb to incredible heights.

Because the pro models are running into the barrier of what is technically possible and practical the price vs performance figures goes out the window, but if you are a pro photographer you need the best you can get.

@Xlay16 ok you just like to complain! firstly i dont use a d3s i have a d300 yes they cost alot but these cameras do not have the capabilities of the d3/d3s i know what iam talking about! you dont! you say all dslr cameras do pro photos they dont! d3s has very high iso which d3100 does not low light photography is helped by high iso! it also has an excellent sensor which allows the colour reproduction to be very accurate!

No comparison there. M9 is a good camera but it can not compete with D3s, for instance who would want to shoot sports with a M9 ? I'ts painfully too slow for that. Leica is a great camera but D3s can do everything M9 can, M9 can't do most of the stuff D3s can. So that "comparison" would be dumb. Those 2 cameras are not meant to be compared and that you even ask about that tells me that you don't much about camera tech.

The general unspoken rule of thumb - for any language, in any country - is to pronounce a word as it's used in common usage.
