  • Shawn's the best...period. There are many established singer/songwriters of her generation that would grant her that but I made up my own mind based on voice (timbre/tone) guitar playing, songwriting, presentation, grace, courage, just such a mesmerizing presence she has if you've ever had the pleasure of being up close...especially in the old days when her level of talent would just floor you cause you knew you'd never heard anything like her....it's her spirit that affects me the most though..

  • This is perhaps the most underated song ever recorded. I have all of Shawn's albums and this is likley among my top 5 fave songs of hers. She is truly an amazing writer.

  • This song stops me in my tracks every time I hear it. And I've heard it about 1,000 times. Jesus H. Christ On A Codfish but that woman can write/play/sing.

(Although I still maintain that the "audience" to which she is playing is the reason why Remington manufactures the 870 Model 12 Gauge shotgun.

SHUT THE F*&^$K UP, YOU A(*&HOLES, OR "MR. SPARKY" HERE IS GONNA START "SINGING ALONG WITH SHAWN."

  • This crowd must be a group of self-serving infidels who have no appreciation of the true talent before them......and yeah, you're right there is no no no no comparison with the junk that the young ones are putting out nowadays..... she is a true talent...... yeah maybe they should have gaga before them.......yeah right.........what does age have to do with talent anyway?

  • LOVE Shawn from her very first CD-and yeah, this song was the first I ever heard from her and it spoke to my heart-still does in fact:-)

  • I could say the same thing ! Friends gave me the CD for my birthday (beautiful gift !) and since that day... wow... she's amazing !!

  • This is truly casting pearls before swine "God bless you Shawn" Love Ya xxx

  • In this video the crowd seems to find her as interesting as their over cooked thirteen dollar burgers. I am telling you, old guitar players never die, they just fade out, even if they are incredibly talented and charismatic. Who can compete with the young?

  • One of many who's not promoted in the UK :0(

  • Maybe she's just not 'chic' enough? No poses, no hype, no fancy hairdo... JUST music! Hard to sell obviously. I only know I saw her live five times and those concerts where among the best I've ever seen. LOVE the music and especially the guitar playing... Divine. Thank you for the music! I also witnessed (only half voluntarily) some of those UK hype acts (yawn)... Note even remotely in one leage....

  • I wish I could see her live. She's so talented. And not nearly well known enough, in my opinion!

  • This looks like Shawn about 5 years ago. She was by her own admission a little out of it; I think her short marriage was just ending. She was overweight and pretty unhappy. Still when she started playing, she was magnificent.

I'm glad to see that she is much healthier physically and emotionally these days.

  • For some of you people who seem to think she's a nobody, or doesn't have a large following, she's a grammy winning singer and songwriter, whos been around for a LONG time, most of the best, players, and best singers, aren't widely known, because they sometimes don't fit the "commercial mold", like some record exec's want them to, not realizing that its their Uniqueness thats makes them so appealing, I've loved and listened to Shawn since the mid to late 80's, when she released her "Live 88" cd,

  • Very true.

It may be because I'm young, but I don't know a lot of people who are familiar with SC. BUT I know she's not a nobody because she's touring here and even internationally and has fans begging to see her in the UK and abroad. Talentwise, I won't even get started.....

  • @duosport1 Excellent comment. You're 100% correct!!

  • This must have been when she was just starting out, nowdays she commands the crowd. Love her music!

  • she's from austin TX

  • Been there and done that one too. Not that I should have been listened to like her but still, and especially with this one! Wow! My first time hearing her and I am amazed. Everything about her beautiful! Izzy Herriette

  • What a voice! Wheres She from? Illinios? Am I right?

  • South Dakota...

  • austin tx

  • I like how she emphasized "Be Quiet Tonight.."

If I ever see Shawn live I'd be too hypnotized to speak :)

    -Kamiece

  • or not know when to quit talking........so many questions................concerns..........condolences......just to be a friend to someone who has been down some troubled roads like myself

  • Well, I guess that's what it means to be rich - buy something precious and then shit on it.

    What an amazingly rude crowd.

I hope Shawn won't be doing too many more of these.

Shame on all of you in the audience. (ever look up the etymology of audience?)

  • totally agree

  • All video of her is so precious...she's such a unique performer...it just makes me ache so much to watch the time pass...she should be immune from the ravages of time just as her musical spirit is...Avalanche is just an amazing song...I've never heard her so much as muff a single note. What a treasure she is.

  • they need a sect called colvinism for such admirers

  • No free booze at this event, FYI. Maybe the people were chatting because they had 2 hours of drinking waiting for Shawn to start. In the venue, the chatting was much less noticeable, I'm sorry my camera picked up so much.

  • Rosey - No worries. I/we thank you for posting the video in the first place,

But anyone who thinks I was kidding is wrong. The first time I heard this song, I was driving cross-country and was in the middle of Wyoming at about 2:00 a.m. I actually stopped the car so that I could listen to it.

I never could figure out why she didn't have a wider audience. But I don't think I care that much.

  • And the first time I heard this song I was driving to my boyfriend's house...the one with whom I was in the avalanche :)!!

Bittersweet memories...but this song helped me sort things out.

  • No No Gillart...you've missed the point..! Neilist 1001 said they would turn and face the AUDIENCE and tell them to shut up! ...and I agree......! Listen to the woman...she's a genius! This is the problem with private gigs, the audience aren't there to see the artist, they are usually there for the free booze. Tossers!

  • I'm with you, Neil. WTF? People are idiots at concerts. Even if you aren't familiar with the song, respect it, especially when it's freaking Shawn Colvin. The most respectful audiences I have found to be in NY City.

  • I'm afraid that, if I had been in that audience, I would have stood up about 10 second into the performance, faced the audience, pulled out a gun, and said, very politely, "SHUT THE F*&^%K OR I'LL KILL YOU!"

SC might have had trouble starting over, but there you go . . . .
