The playstation game is the sequel, and a whole hell of a lot harder and not quite as fun. There's also a 3d one after that which is terrible and killed the series.

Are you sure about this.? I've never heard of a 3D Umihara Kawase game, and I only know of two games in the series, this one and Umihara Kawase Shun, which was released twice (the second time with a bit more content) on the PS1 and ported (very badly, from what I've seen and heard) to the PSP.

Umihara Kawase Shun did use polygons for platforms (which you may be confusing with 3D), but it's a decent game.
