Everyone loves to talk about the swings of greats such as Ben Hogan, Moe Norman and Sam Snead...I would argue that Jack's lower body movement is at the same level. That is one of the most efficient ways of producing incredible distance with accuracy I have ever seen. Look how he clears his hips and just unwinds, to hit a golf ball 300 yards with that equipment required tremendous club head speed. The greatest champion ever.
That is just an enormous coil. He is creaming the ball. Almost out of control. He looks like one of those guys in a Longest Drive contest. If he makes that swing with the current equipment and balls he would be the longest hitter on tour today.
@cmpody You don't fade the ball (at least Jack didn't) giving it an open faced held off glancing blow slice swing. You fade the ball by changing setup so you still release the clubhead and give it a solid blow. The club face is just slightly open to the path. The motion should feel the same as a swing that would produce a draw. A fade should go every bit as far as a draw, as long as it is optimized. I believe they conducted a study about this at trackman dot dk
in the early 1960's Nicklaus won a long drive contest at pro am hitting the ball 347 yrds IMAGINE how far he could have hit it with todays equipment. He would be longer than many top Long drive champs
For me there are similarities of Jack Nicklaus´ and Sam Snead's driver swings. Both are bending the left leg much and both are lifting the heal of the left leg from the ground. Both were extremely successful in their golf careers. Both, as far as I know, had no problems with their bodys, when they got older. But nowadays nobody of the professional players do this with the left leg (as far as I know). The power down to impact of the ball is perfect. Any comments?
@petereuropa nicklaus ended up having hip replacement surgery when he was 59. there's certainly more knee action in nicklaus' swing than today's players. the equipment didn't let him hit the ball high or far, so he had to do it w/ his swing. today's players make terrific, athletic moves through the ball with equipment (clubs and ball) designed to hit the ball high, straight, and long. jack's impact looks like Tiger to me with that left heel spinning out a bit. maybe it's the black pants.
@earth...: To have a hip replacement surgery is more of a bad genetic inharitance (I suppose, I'm no expert). Anyway, for me JN's drive when he was young is very powerful. And I have noticed that Phil Mickelson's driver is a bit like SS's and JN's. He also is lifting his heal in the backswing. But you have to know: I am no expert. I'm just curious. So many say that these golfers swing is absulate. I wonder if?
@petereuropa Well, because of the characteristics of the modern equipment, today's player's generate power in their swing through core rotation. the swings are a little flatter, more connected, more on a constatn plane, and, supposedly, easier to repeat. for that reason, the 'old' swing has become 'obsolete'; heel lift, reverse 'C' finish position, 'overactive' legs, etc. but.......
@earthshine2k .... a good grip, a one piece takeaway, big shoulder turn, huge arc going back, head behind the ball, initiating the downswing with a lower body shift into the left side, maintaining spine angle, firing the right side, hitting from the inside, hitting against a firm left side, releasing the club and finishing in perfect balance....whew!!... are fundamental to any good golf swing; old or new.
@petereuropa good luck w/ the longer clubs. post a video of your swing. i'd be happy to take a look at it. United States Golf Teachers Federation member, here. I'll help you swing it like Jack.
I have just read my comment from 6 months ago.....still no sign of that ball coming down yet.

such a huge turn, a massive amount of power. I'd be interested to know what kind of shafts he used in his driver in the early 60's.
I know he used to regularly burst the insert in the face of his persimmon drivers back then.

you gotta feel sorry for that golf ball..................did it eventually land on planet earth ?

To think that he used to regularly hit 300+ drives with persimmon and balata (while fading it) is remarkable.

@earth..: once more I have to say I'm no expert at all.
But if you see the former super golfer, so important video for me: 'Ben Hogan Golf Swing'
and if you see this swing of JN. For me it shows that JN here, thank's to his 'lift heal', get that extra power (look at his hip) in the swing.
And as I mentioned: Phil M. also is lifting his heal=perhaps it's not that obsolete
My 1st thing for next season will be=to buy longer irons as I'm 196cm and played so bad golf last season.
Kep swinging!

@boprn: it's not comedy when I start to drive over 300 mtr this week and smash the tent wall (indoor training). It's reality.

I looked at your swing on your channel. Very nice. No comparison necessary. Congratulations on your win(s). Your swing is 'money'. Keep it up.

How long drive could he do with the equipment of today? What a power! 400mtr?
