He also crushed the trade unions and the left, killing them if necessary, and was beloved by German big industry. So he doesn't really qualify as a socialist either. He did strongly believe, however, that the liberal left were destroying Germany, so maybe there are other people you can compare him to.

This guy is clearly well meaning individual. He has however latched onto a philosophy which unintentionally harms working class families.
And he just does not "get it" with faith and hunting. He perceives them as little more as a stabilizing force that are not inherently good on their own. Religion is not there to get right with God, it is there to fix social pathologies and create a heaven on earth. The 2nd amendment is not a responsibility and a right, it is a crutch.

But Obama hasn't said nor implied either of your points in regards to Faith and Guns. He was speaking to the reasons why people were voting against their economic interests and instead making choices based on emotional "value" issues, such as gay marriage, gun rights, etc. Just look at the polls after the 2004 election and one of the main reasons people gave as to why they voted for Bush was because they felt he shared their values. Obama's point has merit and is in no way demeaning.
