When my family and I were still living in Ireland, my mother used to sing this to me and my sister when she brushed my sister's hair. Good memories, indeed.
@Broadway3 It's so when you're looking for Celtic Woman songs it can slip in on the search :) Especially if you're looking for this song but have forgotten the album and song name lol it does help :)
I love the moral teachings and the social undertones subtly played out in poetic turns of phrase - much like the way the fiddle and whistle express the melody. The maid who "sold" her "barley" - reminds me of the English folk song "Let no man steal your thyme"
@100turley Maybe the people that like it listen to it? You have a point that this music does seem to have turned into a tourist novelty which is a shame.. as the rich heritage of music in Ireland has so much more to offer than that. I don't think dismissing it as 'shit' is much of an argument though.
@Darksky1001able Celtic music was an original music. Asian music seems to have been influenced back in the 1200's by Celtic music. Even music from Mexico has it's roots with the Celts. In the US, Zydeco, Blue Grass, Blues, Rock etc. all have their roots coming from the great music of yesteryear.
@tjandthreedaysgrace Yeah, I figured it was a very old song. But I bet when it was first written, it was written for a guy to sing. So I guess what I'm saying is I think it's weird they had a lady singing it. I really do like the song though :)
I've been listening to this song for years now and i actually just realized that it's a lady singing about another lady by reading your comment x). Strange indeed. I'm glad they had a woman singing it though, for she has that beautiful soft, high-pitched voice that most men usually don't have.
The first time I heard this music (from Deanta) I was at Cozumel with an aunt, after having had a great time horseriding, and at dusk, on the road back, I fell in love with this and "lakes of pontchartrain" song.
Then, 2 years later, I found this cd in Walmart, and inmediately bought it. Now I listen to it everytime I've got to stand infront of the computer doing homework or when I just wish to relax.
@broersz I tend disagree. In my case my family persecutes me for not speaking spanish, for listening to Irish music among other things... and lots more. It's just silly really. I'm puerto rican, but I am also myself. So, you're saying that if I was born in Puerto Rico, could speak spanish, like spanish food that it makes me more of a PR? Then what am I ? American? No one is just American, not unless you're native american.
@broersz American culture is not ALL I know. I'm more comfortable with American cultures, yes, I grew up in it, but I'm not completely excluded from my other culture. I am American, but I'm also Puerto Rican. PR is my subculture. What I'm trying to get through is language, birthplace, traditions, food, accents, what have you all contributes to oneself. BUT if one is deprived from their culture it shouldn't take away from them. It's apart of who they are.
@TheIllusion4you i have 2 uncles (my mothers brothers) who moved to america when they were in their late teens early twenties. they are now completely americanised and can not (in my eyes) be classed as welsh or celtic. they're americans. but im not going to deny your right to be puerto rican, even if you have never lived there. good luck mate and stay proud.
@broersz The celtic people were mercenaries for hire, back in the day of Kings and Queens, and traveled all over the world. Did that make them any less celtic?
Every time I hear this song I want to get up and dance. I imagine myself in a beautiful rustic castle walking out to rolling green hills and heading to the market. I love this song!
My mother bought this Cd, I got attatched to this song instantly, when I hear it, I imagine myself in a red celtic dress running through a castle. I absolutely love this.
